The Efficacy Of Prp Injection Vs Corticosteroid Injection In The Management Of Common Tendinopathies: A Systematic Review, Eric Caloud Jan 2023

The Efficacy Of Prp Injection Vs Corticosteroid Injection In The Management Of Common Tendinopathies: A Systematic Review, Eric Caloud

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Tendinopathy is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders in active patients, accounting for at least 7% of physician visits in the United States. In recent years, there has been an increasing body of evidence for the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the management of tendinopathies compared to corticosteroid injections (CSI) for patients refractory to conservative treatment.

Methods: This review was performed in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The SPORTDiscus, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases were searched for randomized controlled studies published between 2010 and 2023. The keywords utilized in the …

Effect Of Stretch And Release On Myofascial Stem Cell Function In Vitro: A Putative Model To Understand The Molecular Benefits Of The Myofascial Release (Mfr) Technique, Ben Smith, Shahn Notta, Debasis Mondal Jan 2023

Effect Of Stretch And Release On Myofascial Stem Cell Function In Vitro: A Putative Model To Understand The Molecular Benefits Of The Myofascial Release (Mfr) Technique, Ben Smith, Shahn Notta, Debasis Mondal

Research Day

Despite the beneficial effects of osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT), there is a lack of in vitro models to understand the molecular mechanisms associated with these time-tested therapies. The Myofascial Release (MFR) technique is a non-invasive approach that involves passive stretching, hold and release, of the soft tissue to achieve myofascial homeostasis. Tissue-resident mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can regulate the myofascial microenvironment by altering their secreted factors following stretch and release. Therefore, we initiated studies to develop an in vitro model to investigate the possible effects of stretch and release on MSC function, i.e. proliferation and differentiation capabilities, and changes in …

The Effects Of Sex On Zebrafish Bone Metabolism, Simon Bagatto Jan 2023

The Effects Of Sex On Zebrafish Bone Metabolism, Simon Bagatto

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

I investigated the effects of diet and sex on zebrafish bone metabolism. Zebrafish were subjected to either a high-calorie or low-calorie diet over a five-week period. After this diet, zebrafish scales were used to measure alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) enzyme activity with a fluorescent substrate. The enzyme activities were markers of the osteoblasts (ALP) and the osteoclasts (TRAP). These data were compared among sex and diet of the zebrafish using a repeated measures ANOVA statistical test. I also measured the number of resorption lacunae per scale (another indicator of osteoclast activity). The results showed higher TRAP …

Using The Articularis Genu To Test Peri-Articular Muscle Health During Knee Osteoarthritis, José A. Cruz Ayala, Mallory Crawford, Mary C. Gatterer, Maria Tovar, Jessica C. Rivera, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero Jul 2022

Using The Articularis Genu To Test Peri-Articular Muscle Health During Knee Osteoarthritis, José A. Cruz Ayala, Mallory Crawford, Mary C. Gatterer, Maria Tovar, Jessica C. Rivera, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) involves peri-articular sarcopenia. The infrapatellar articularis genu (AG) links to the quadriceps femoris (QF) and can be sampled from discarded tissue during arthroplasty. We predict disuse-mediated changes in AG myofiber type ratio and atrophy similar to reports on the QF during OA. OA AGs (n = 40) were preserved and grouped by poor (≤ 85°; n = 11), fair (90°–110°; n = 19), and good (≥ 115°; n = 10) range of motion (ROM). Immunolabeling of slow and fast myosin heavy chains in AG sections allowed comparing distribution and cross-sectional area (CSA) of type-I (T1) and type-II …

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Stay-At-Home Orders On Pain And Mental Health In Omm Patients, Sylvia Orozco Silberman, Philip Collins, Danielle Cooley, James Bailey, Steven M. Brunwasser Phd, Nicholas Averell May 2022

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Stay-At-Home Orders On Pain And Mental Health In Omm Patients, Sylvia Orozco Silberman, Philip Collins, Danielle Cooley, James Bailey, Steven M. Brunwasser Phd, Nicholas Averell

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

New Jersey was placed in a state of emergency and a statewide stay-at-home order during the COVID-19 pandemic

Very little has been published examining the effects of chronic pain after stopping osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), although it seems unethical to stop a treatment shown to work so well that is both minimally invasive and cost effective

We hypothesized OMM patients experienced an increase in pain since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic and closure of OMM/Family Medicine offices

A Review Of The Effectiveness Of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine At Alleviating Pregnancy-Related Pain, Alexandria Lomanno, Olivia Choi, Danielle Cooley May 2022

A Review Of The Effectiveness Of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine At Alleviating Pregnancy-Related Pain, Alexandria Lomanno, Olivia Choi, Danielle Cooley

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Globally, more than a quarter of pregnant patients experience low back pain (LBP) during pregnancy with additional complaints of pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and other somatic dysfunctions. Though the standard of care for LBP in pregnancy is often analgesics, concerns about potential side effects that may cause lasting harm to the fetus may preclude pregnant patients from taking pain medications. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a nonpharmacologic treatment option that is routinely used for LBP in non-pregnant patients. Given the low risk of adverse effects, OMM may prove to be beneficial for pregnant patients suffering from LBP or PGP.

Comparing The Relapse Rate Between Medication Assisted-Only Treatment And Medication-Assisted Treatment With An Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Regimen In Patients With Musculoskeletal Pain, Karen Huang, Danielle Cooley May 2022

Comparing The Relapse Rate Between Medication Assisted-Only Treatment And Medication-Assisted Treatment With An Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Regimen In Patients With Musculoskeletal Pain, Karen Huang, Danielle Cooley

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Since the opioid crisis first began in 1991, opioid-related overdoses in the United States have continued to increase dramatically, killing nearly 47,000 people in 2018, and making it one of the most pressing issues in healthcare. The most reported reason for misuse of pain relievers was to relieve physical pain. The increase in opioid abuse has also led to an increase in patients seeking medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been shown to have efficacy in relieving both chronic and acute pain. No current studies have investigated the use of OMT as an adjunct treatment to MAT for …

Comparative Assessment Of Grit In The Allopathic Versus Osteopathic Physician, Amber Cheesman, Meagan Vermeulen, Joanna Petrides, Charalampos Papachristou

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Matriculating into medical school is a strenuous process, including numerous roadblocks unique to both allopathic and osteopathic schools, with osteopathic applicants often jumping more hurdles in the journey.

Grit: passion and perseverance towards long term goals, especially in the setting of failure/adversity

High levels of grit correlate with low levels of burnout

Purpose: examine grit in allopathic versus osteopathic physician to help identify resources to prevent physician burnout

Use Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Alleviating Hypertonic Chest Wall Pain, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna May 2022

Use Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Alleviating Hypertonic Chest Wall Pain, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We present the case of a 20-year-old male patient with no cardiac history coming in for left sided chest pain described as “burning” sensation. On physical exam, it was noted that patient had hypertonic chest wall muscles that were tight and spastic when palpated on the left chest wall. We used Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to help patient relieve hypertonic muscle. We chose to use muscle energy technique (MET) since this relies on reciprocal inhibition with the end result being relaxation of the target muscle.

The patient had resolution of chest pain after applying the technique. Although we did not …

Effect Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Patients With Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots): A Literature Review, Sidharth Sahni, Harrison Jordan, Binoy Desai, Danielle Cooley, Alexander King May 2022

Effect Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Patients With Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots): A Literature Review, Sidharth Sahni, Harrison Jordan, Binoy Desai, Danielle Cooley, Alexander King

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is characterized by autonomic dysregulation resulting in diminished blood flow and excessive tachycardia.

POTS has been scarcely studied in the clinical setting. A review of literature generated only four articles, only one of which met the established criteria.

A follow up study to evaluate the effect of OMT on the quality of life for patients with POTS is planned. The hypothesis is that osteopathic manipulation plays a role in the management of POTS, as patients should experience improvement in their symptoms and their overall quality of life.

Use Of Pocus And Omt For Anterior Shoulder Reduction, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Neeharika Bhatnagar May 2022

Use Of Pocus And Omt For Anterior Shoulder Reduction, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Neeharika Bhatnagar

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Shoulder dislocations are very a common presentation in the emergency department. This represents about 50% of all joint dislocations presenting to the ER. Over 95% of the dislocations are anterior. Approximately 70% of shoulder dislocations occur in men and in both genders, the prevalence of shoulder dislocations occurs in a bimodal distribution in age in those younger than 20 and over 60 years old. Shoulder dislocation can occur anteriorly, posteriorly, and inferiorly. In an anterior dislocation, excessive force from external rotation and abduction causes a tear in the anterior ligamentous capsule3, causing the humeral head to dislocate from the glenoid …

Omm As A Complementary Therapy For Chronic Shoulder Overuse Injury In A Division Iii Softball Pitcher, Drew Saltzman, Ruchir Nanavati, Taylor Parsons, Seungkyu Park, David Abend Do May 2022

Omm As A Complementary Therapy For Chronic Shoulder Overuse Injury In A Division Iii Softball Pitcher, Drew Saltzman, Ruchir Nanavati, Taylor Parsons, Seungkyu Park, David Abend Do

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

At the height of the season, baseball and softball pitchers are playing 4-5 games a week and practicing on days without games. As a result, they put tremendous additive stress on their throwing shoulder and elbow joint.

This case utilized a novel, non-invasive osteopathic approach to improving shoulder mobility in a Division III athlete. If used on a regular basis, the shoulder mobility technique shows utility for athletes suffering from overuse injury. Our patient showed mild qualitative improvement, however they continue to use OMM as complementary treatment and describe a moderate qualitative improvement.

Comparing Efficacy Of Denosumab To Bisphosphonates In Fragility Fractures, Ronald Toledo Cardoso Jan 2022

Comparing Efficacy Of Denosumab To Bisphosphonates In Fragility Fractures, Ronald Toledo Cardoso

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones with decreased bone mineral density and bone mass, leading to poor bone quality/structure, increasing the risk of fragility fractures. Pharmacological treatment is recommended to decrease risk of fractures. Current first line treatment is with bisphosphonates; however, alternative treatment includes denosumab. Both bisphosphonates and denosumab are antiresorptive drugs but differ in mechanism of action. Bisphosphonates remain as first line treatment.

Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is aimed at the PICO question in adults with osteoporosis, what is the efficacy of denosumab compared to bisphosphonates in decreasing the risk of …

The social desirability response bias was controlled in statistical analyses.

Results: The corrected item-total score correlations were all positive and statistically significant, and the effect sizes of item …

Trends And Disparities In Osteoarthritis Prevalence Among Us Adults, 2005–2018, Yingke Xu, Qing Wu Nov 2021

Trends And Disparities In Osteoarthritis Prevalence Among Us Adults, 2005–2018, Yingke Xu, Qing Wu

Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine Faculty Research

Studies reporting trends and disparities of osteoarthritis (OA) in the United States are limited. We aimed to examine trends and disparities of OA prevalence among US adults, from 2005 to 2018. Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005–2006 to 2017–2018 were analyzed. Age-adjusted and self-reported OA prevalence, stratified by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES), was calculated separately for men and women. The linear trend and the association between the survey cycles and OA prevalence were assessed. Age-adjusted and self-reported OA prevalence linearly increased in the seven survey cycles (both Plinear trend ≤ 0.0002) in men and …

Testing Association Between Vitamin D And Osteoarthritis Pain Intotal Knee Arthroplasty Patients, Andrew Fine, Vinod Dasa, Claudia Leonardi, Luis Marrero, Jennifer Simkin

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Objective: 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) plays an important role in maintaining adequate serum calcium and bone remodeling. Studies to date have had conflicting results regarding the correlation between serum levels of 25(OH)D and reported osteoarthritis pain. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between serum levels of 25(OH)D and preoperative scored osteoarthritis pain in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. Also using this data to look at disparities in serum levels of 25(OH)D. Methods: 100 frozen serum samples were chosen from a TKA repository of 350 New Orleans patients. Patients were separated by race and sex, …
