Severe mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a fatal neuropathic lysosomal storage disorder with significant skeletal involvement. Treatment involves bone marrow transplantation (BMT), and although effective, is suboptimal, due to treatment sequelae and residual disease. Improved approaches will need to be tested in animal models and compared to BMT. Herein we report on bone marrow transplantation to treat feline mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I). Five MPS I stably engrafted kittens, transplanted with unfractionated bone marrow (6.3 × 107–1.1 × 109 nucleated bone marrow cells per kilogram) were monitored for 13–37 months post-engraftment. The tissue total glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content was reduced to …

Treatment Of Pasireotide Lar-Associated Hyperglycemia In A Patient With Acromegaly, Cheryl Rosenfeld
Treatment Of Pasireotide Lar-Associated Hyperglycemia In A Patient With Acromegaly, Cheryl Rosenfeld
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (Middletown) Publications and Research
Objective: Hyperglycemia was noted in pasireotide long-acting release (PAS LAR}-treated patients with acromegaly during clinical trials. We describe a clinical approach to hyperglycemia in a patient with acromegaly and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) during PAS LAR initiation and treatment.
Methods: Clinical response to PAS LAR, including self monitored blood glucose (SMBG) levels, HbA1c, IGF-1, and adverse effects, was reported. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old male was referred for consultation in 2007 owing to uncontrolled DM2 despite maximum metformin (MET) dose. Testing led to a biochemical diagnosis of acromegaly. An 8-mm pituitary adenoma was seen on MRI. Transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma …

Medical Interns', Residents' And Attending Physicians' Attitudes Towards Integrative Medicine And Recommended Treatments For Patients With Psoriasis, Jennifer L. Pacyon
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Background: Psoriasis is a multifactorial disease that effect approximately 7.5 million Americans. There are a variety of traditional treatments for psoriasis (e.g. topical medications, biologics) that for many, are effective in combating the disease. However, traditional treatments often have aversive side effects and may not be appropriate for every patient (e.g. pregnant women). Additionally, the efficacy of these medications are variable leaving some looking for adjunctive treatment options. There is increasing evidence to support the use of adjunctive treatments for psoriatic patients (e.g. psychotherapy, mindfulness). However, research is variable in regards to medical professionals’ attitudes towards integrative medicine (IM) as …
