Telerehabilitation: An Updated View Of Practices, Cost Analysis, And Client Perceptions, Gokcen Akyurek, Selen Aydoner
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Telerehabilitation is an alternative and complementary rehabilitation method in which information and communication technologies are used to remove the distance between healthcare professionals and clients. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the rapid adoption of telerehabilitation services, limiting the in-person rehabilitation services available all over the world. The restrictions that started with the COVID-19 pandemic also negatively affected rehabilitation services, clients, and healthcare professionals, and it was considered essential to provide services using telerehabilitation technology. Therefore, this review aimed to examine and inform health professionals' telerehabilitation practices such as remote assessment, evaluation, intervention, monitoring, supervision, education, and follow-up during the …

Lessons Learnt By An Experienced Clinician-Novice Researcher Throughout The Process Of Qualitative Research Interviewing, Heidi Lavis, Paulette Van Vliet, Meredith Tavener
The Qualitative Report
Within occupational therapy, the complex process of transitioning from clinician to clinician-researcher often presents challenges demanding critical contemplation. Methodological issues and ethical challenges can arise throughout the emergent transition into role duality, potentially impacting upon novice clinician-researcher development, influencing research processes and quality. As part of the Task-AT Home qualitative study, a reflexive critique of interview processes, guided by the reflection-on-action rubric and a typology of catalysts for dual-role experiences was conducted. The reflective critique identified commonalities and differences between clinical and research interviewing. Additionally, through three exemplars of experience, the critique provided insights into how clinical reasoning processes were …
Goal Setting And Goal Management For Chronic Conditions: Intervention And Implementation Strategies, Eunyoung Kang
Goal Setting And Goal Management For Chronic Conditions: Intervention And Implementation Strategies, Eunyoung Kang
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Adults with chronic conditions experience limited participation in personally meaningful activities and roles. Chronic conditions can present challenges across personal factors such as cognitive, psychological, physiological, or neurobehavioral functions. These personal factors then dynamically interact with environmental factors, occupation, and performance, ultimately hindering adults with chronic conditions in achieving their goals to fully participate in meaningful activities and roles.
Goal setting and goal management has evolved from diverse theories including Social Cognitive Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and The Theory of Intentional Action Control. These theories emphasize the importance of addressing influential theoretical constructs such as self-efficacy and outcome expectancy but also …

Our research was led by Kelly Culhane, OTR/L, at California Children Services (CCS), in searching for efficacious and cost-effective occupational therapy treatments, or sequences of treatments, in chronic pediatric (ages 3-21) burn scar management. The primary outcomes following burn scar treatment are to increase functionality, mobility, well-being, and to improve the physical appearance of the scars. Research suggests that exercise, massage, silicon gel, and silicon patches can all be used as occupational therapy treatment for burn scars. Unstructured massages and silicon patches were found to be the most cost-effective solutions, resulting in less itch and scar vascularity, and increased range …

Ins And Outs Of Running A Successful Non-Profit Organization At Northern Michigan Equine Therapy, Megan Morrill
Capstone Projects
My capstone experience took place at Northern Michigan Equine Therapy (NMET) and focused on leadership, administration, advocacy, education, and clinical practice skills. NMETs equine- assisted occupational therapy and HorseSense® self-development programs play an integral role in the northern Michigan community, yet insurance will not cover these services since they are flagged as “alternative” therapies due to utilizing a horse as a therapeutic tool. Because of this NMET relies on donations, grants, and fundraisers for program income. During a SWAT analysis NMET stated their biggest weakness and threat is not having enough program income to hire an additional part-time or full-time …

Addressing Adherence To Home Exercise Programs In A Hand Therapy Setting, Austin B. Ellis
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Roughly 1,100 per 100,000 persons experience an upper-extremity injury per year including burns, fractures, or amputations (Ootes et al., 2012). These upper-extremity injuries can impact a person’s physical function, activities of daily living (ADL), social, psychological, and financial aspects in life (Che Daud et al., 2016b). These statistics warrant the need for occupational therapy practitioners specializing in hand therapy, and other hand therapists to address these areas of client’s lives that have been affected by their upper extremity injury.

Using A Flipped Classroom To Teach Evidence-Based Practice To Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Students, April C. Cowan, Karen Ratcliff, Chih-Ying Li
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Constructivist teaching approaches rely on students to be active participants in their learning. A flipped classroom is a constructivist approach that requires the students to complete pre-learning activities outside of class. Thus, in class the students can practice and engage in team-based discussions and teacher guided learning. We delivered evidence-based practice (EBP) concepts to entry level occupational therapy (OT) students in a doctoral program using a constructivist approach, that included a flipped classroom model and reliance on team-based strategies. We used the Evidence Based Practice Confidence (EPIC) Scale to assess the change in students’ confidence in EBP. Students demonstrated statistically …

Developing The Change Agent Competencies Of Occupational Therapy University Students: Using A Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Approach In A Canadian Program, Étienne Lavoie-Trudeau, Tim Dubé, Michaël Beaudoin, Annie Carrier
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Canadian occupational therapy (OT) university programs must teach change agent competencies. These include promoting social justice and empowering clients, which United States occupational therapists also do. Change agent competency requirements are challenging to teach and involve multidisciplinary knowledge and non-traditional skills. As few occupational therapists feel competent to act as change agents, university programs must engage in a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) approach and identify areas of improvement. The aim of this study, informed by SoTL, was to document, as described by participants, the pedagogical activities related to teaching the change agent role in an OT program in …

Background: Mental health issues and burnout are becoming more common among students in healthcare programs (Dyrbye et al., 2014). As demands placed on healthcare professions continue to increase, there has been an increased interest in researching the practice of mindfulness to promote self-care (Irving et al., 2009). Mindfulness has been defined as “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment” (Kabat-Zinn, 2003, p. 145). Mindfulness has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety among pre-healthcare college students (Burgstahler & Stenson, 2020). Little research has investigated …
