Effects Of The Serotonin Depletor Parachlorophenylalanine Upon Shock-Induced Aggression And Pressing Responses In Rats, Robert G. Sewell

The literature concerning the effects of d, l-parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA) upon shock-induced aggression (SIA) is reviewed and found to be inconsistent. PCPA, a known serotonin depletor, has behavioral effects in a variety of other procedures which collectively suggest that PCPA should produce SIA enhancement. The present study was designed to analyze PCPA (300 mg/kg) effects upon SIA in rats restrained spatially close to an inanimate target and panel operandum. The results showed marked increases in both aggressive biting and panel pressing for several days following each PCPA treatment for each subject tested. Strange (unfamiliar) males affect survival of progeny of reproductive female rodents in a variety of ways. In mice, strange males block pregnancy before implantation of embryos (Bruce, 1959) but only in females that are not lactating (Bruce and Parkes, 1961). In voles these males can block pregnancy both before and after implantation (Stehn and Richmond, 1975; Marks and Schadler, 1979; Schadler, 1981). Strange males have also been shown to kill nursing pups in lemmings (Mallory and Brooks, 1978) and mice (Labov, 1980 and vom Saal and Howard, 1982).

Antibody raised against the purified human erythrocyte glucose transporter specifically precipitated four proteins from normal and Rous sarcoma virus-transformed chicken embryo cells: a major protein of Mr 41,000 and minor proteins of Mr 68,000, 73,000, and 82,000. The Mr 41,000 and 82,000 proteins were found only in a membrane fraction, not in the soluble fraction, and displayed a heterogeneous mobility on NaDodSO4/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, suggesting glycosylation. The Mr 41,000 and 82,000 proteins were increased in amount after malignant transformation in direct proportion to the increase in hexose transport rate, and the increase was dependent on the expression of the src …

Genetically Controlled Variation Of “Acid” Beta-Galactosidase Detected In Rattus Norvegicus By Isoelectric Focusing, T C Douglas, K A Kimmel, P E Dawson

Two genetically variant forms of rat "acid" beta-galactosidase were found to differ in isoelectric point and pH dependence, but not in thermostability or sensitivity to inhibition by p-mercuribenzoate (PMB). The results of two backcrosses and an intercross indicated that the isoelectric focusing phenotypes are controlled by two codominant alleles at a single autosomal locus, for which we propose the name Glb-1. No significant linkage between Glb-1 and albino (LG I), brown (LG II), or hooded (LG VI) was observed. Strain-specific differences in total levels of kidney beta-galactosidase were detected, but it is not yet known whether the variation is controlled …

The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Factors, Attitudes, And The Frequency Of Pap Smears Of Female Patients In A Rural Health Care Center, Kathy Ann Barnes

Fifty-seven women over the age of 16, seeking care at a rural health center, completed questionnaires concerning demographic factors and health beliefs and attitudes. Correlation coefficients and Z scores were computed for the variables. There was significant positive correlation in both demographic and health belief and attitude areas. Discussed also are factors possibly contributing to the test results, as well as alternative research models.

A fortunate coincidence, discovered recently, has provided annual ryegrass toxicity researchers with valuable knowledge which may help them understand how the ARGT toxins affect animals, and further their investigations into vaccine development. A toxic antibiotic, identified years ago, has proved to be closely related to the ARGT toxins. Antibiotics are generally regarded as effective agents for the control of many bacterial and fungal infections. However, some of them are toxic to both the bacteria and the host, whether man or animal.

T Cell Growth Factor Receptors. Quantitation, Specificity, And Biological Relevance, Richard J. Robb, Allen Munck, Kendall A. Smith

To examine directly the hypothesis that T cell growth factor (TCGF) interacts with target cells in a fashion similar to polypeptide hormones, the binding of radiolabeled TCGF to various cell populations was investigated. The results indicate that TCGF interacts with activated T cells via a receptor through which it initiates the T cell proliferative response. Internally radiolabeled TCGF, prepared from a human T leukemia cell line and purified by gel filtration and isoelectric focusing, retained biological activity and was uniform with respect to size and charge. The urinary excretion of 3-Methylhistidine was used as an index of muscle catabolism in four groups of obese persons receiving a Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF). The composition of the supplements were as follows: Group I: 75 g protein, 25 g complex carbohydrate (starch) per day; Group II: 25 g protein, 75 g complex carbohydrate (starch) per day; Group III: 75 g protein, 25 g simple carbohydrate (glucose) per day; Group IV: 25 g protein, 75 g simple carbohydrate (glucose) per day. Stress of handling, partial or complete sialoadenectomy, and the administration of parotid hormone (PH), sodium fluoride (NaF), or guanidino-succinic acid (GSA) were examined for effects on fasting plasma glucose and insulin or effects on intravenous glucose tolerance in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Basal glucose and insulin were substantially elevated as a result of the stress of translocation in large animals, but were not altered in small animals. A rise in plasma insulin occured in control animals 20 minutes following anesthesia and the removal of a blood sample by cardiac puncture but not in animals that had been handled twice daily for …

Analyses of plasma membrane and other subcellular fractions indicate that the primary location of cytochrome b in human neutrophils is not the plasma membrane. The procedure developed for the purification of plasma membrane from fresh human neutrophils yielded a 14-fold enrichment in the marker enzyme 5'-nucleotidase and a 10-fold enrichment in ouabain-sensitive ATPase. On sucrose density gradients, the peak density of 5'-nucleotidase activity was 1.12 g/ml, and was shifted after digitonin addition to 1.15 g/ml. Protein in the plasma membrane equalled approximately 8 percent of the whole cell protein. A b-type cytochrome was found to be present in the plasma …

Effects Of Withdrawing Diphenylhydantoin (Dilantin) On Matching To Sample Performance In Mentally Retarded Persons, Vicky June Davis

The present study was designed to examine the effects of gradual DPH withdrawal on the matching to sample performance of three mentally retarded persons. The percentage of correct responses per session served as the dependent variable and the sample and comparison stimuli were red, green, and blue illumination of translucent response windows. The results showed that doses of diphenylhydantoin considerably lower than the suggested optimim therapeutic level can impair the performance of mentally retarded individuals on a simple discrimination task. A computer model of the left ventricular (LV) epicardial surface was developed from Jang’s truncated ellipsoidal model, which has a minor to major axis ratio of 6:10. The model was applied in calculating the area of a segment of the myocardium, jeopardized by an impending occlusion of its associated artery. The endangered segment of the LV muscle was also visualized in different projections by rotations in three space and graphical displays simulating the three dimensions.

A Field Investigation Of Meiofaunal Dispersal: Tidal Resuspension And Implications, Susan S. Bell, K. M. Sherman

Presence of meiofauna in resuspended sediments was investigated in a tidal creek system employing a specially designed core sampler and quick freezing techniques. Forty core samples were taken during 4 successive ebb tides to determine the distribution of meiofauna in (a) overlying water; (b) resuspended sediment; and (c) undisturbed sediment fractions of each sample. Our experiments demonstrate that 13-44 % of the meiobenthic copepod subcommunity was present in overlying and resuspended sediment fractions, while only a small percentage of nematodes was found simultaneously in these layers. We suggest that selected meiofauna may disperse through tidally coupled mechanisms and that such …

Transformation of T lymphocytes, induced by treatment with periodate or with neuraminidase plus galactose oxidase, requires the participation of accessory cells. Procedures were developed for the fractionation of rat lymph node cells, by which most of the lymphocytes can be recovered as a major population of cells that do not respond to mitogenic stimulation unless accessory cells from a separated minor population are added. Further purification led to a 1000-fold overall increase in accessory activity per cell, with a 50-70% yield. The purest preparations were virtually free of macrophages and contained more than 90% typical dendritic cells. Maximum responses occurred …

These studies explore the distribution of blood flow among small samples of placental tissue. Labeled microspheres (14 ± 1 pm) were Injected Into the left ventricle of six un-anesthetized ewes and Into the jugular vein of the fetus In utero. A total of 3,576 samples weighing 31. +11. (S.D.) mg were taken from seventeen cotyledons and counted for flow labels. Maternal and fetal flow within the cotyledons were both normally distributed with standard deviations of 44%. The maternal/ fetal flow ratio was less than 0.5 In 9% of the cotyledon, between 0.5 and 1.5 In 70%, and greater than 1.5 …

Consecutive medical records of 10,622 births were viewed, January, 1962, through December, 1972, from McAllen General Hospital, McAllen, Texas. The overall incidence of birth defects was consistent with rates for the United States. Birth defects detected in Spanish surnamed were significantly higher than for non-Spanish surnamed. Spanish surnamed bore eight times more defects of the central nervous system than non Spanish surnamed. Males had significantly more defects than females, and had almost seven times more defects of the urogenital system. The most distinctive feature of this survey was the high incidence of atelectasis. It has been previously demonstrated that 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene (DMBA) is an initiator of ovarian granulosa cell tumors. It is also known that DMBA leads to destruction of primordial oocytes, and that tumor induction may involve the interaction of pituitary gonadotropins. However, the effects of DMBA on ovarian steroidogenesis and uterine growth in relation to the tumorigenic process have not been investigated. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine these parameters using adult C57Bl/6N mice treated in proestrus and diestrus II with 0.1 ml corn oil with or without 1.5 mg DMBA and killed 44 hours later. Plasma samples were obtained from seven hypertriglyceridemic (>150 mg/dl) chronic renal failure patients before and after regular hemodialysis. The effect of the plasma on the lipolytic activity of bovine milk lipoprotein lipase was investigated. The lipoprotein lipase activity, as measured by release of C¹⁴-labeled free fatty acid from triglyceride, was decreased 8-67% when incubated with uremic plasma as compared to the control plasma (44 mg/dl triglyceride). The inhibition noted prior to hemodialysis did not appear to be alleviated by the dialysis but subsequent treatment with an isolated ultrafiltration technique did appear to remove an inhibitory substance as …

A study was undertaken to determine the concentration at which a sealer reaches a point of nontoxicity. An in vitro model utilizing HeLa cells and human fibroblasts was used to observe the effect of various concentrations of eight freshly mixed and eight set root canal sealers. Evaluation of toxicity was determined by cell survival which was measured by incorporation of ³H-thymidine into the nucleic acid components of each cell type used. Each dilution tested was allowed direct contact with the cells for 24 hours before toxicity evaluation. The results indicate that all sealers at concentrations presently used are cytotoxic …
