The t(8;21) between the AML1 and ETO genes is a commonly seen genetic alteration in acute myeloid leukemia. Recently, we reported that the fusion partner ETO binds to the human nuclear receptor co-repressor (NCOR), a member of the NCOR/SIN3/histone deacetylase complex. This complex mediates transcriptional repression as a result of chromatin remodeling. Here, we used a combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization and hybrid panels to localize the human NCOR gene (NCOR) to chromosome band 17p11.2. The position of human NCOR on 17p11 raises the possibility of deranged transcriptional regulation in malignant disorders associated with deletions of 17p.

In this study, we have examined urinary Calcium/Creatinine ratio (uCA/Cr) as a biochemical marker of bone turnover to show the effectiveness of etidronate and whether it could be used as a follow-up parameter of treatment. Eighty-one postmenopausal women aged 40 to 65 included into the study to investigate the effects of etidronate on uCa/Cr in a prospective, randomised, placebo controlled clinical trial. Regional odontodisplasia is a developmental anomaly of dental tissues with characteristic clinical, radiographic and histologic appearances. It most commonly affects the maxillary anterior teeth of both the primary and permanent dentition, and occurs in females twice as often as in males. The pathogenesis is unknown. A case of a twelve- year old female with regional odontodisplasia is presented. Although the affected teeth displayed the radiographical and clinical features of odontodisplasia, the patient appeared with significant soft tissue swelling on the anterior region of the mandible.

Since chronic myloid leukemia (CML) has a genetic base, we aimed to seek the genetic instability of patients by micronucleus analysis, a mutation screening test which was applied by cytokinesis-blocked (CB) method. In this prospective study, we found that 21.80% (29/133) of nosocomial urinary tract infections (NUTis) were caused by Escherichia coli, 12.78% (17/133) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 10.53% (14/133) by Klebsiella pneumoniae whereas 16.54% (22/133) were caused by coagulase negative staphylococci. The highest susceptibility rate was determined with imipenem among gram negatives (21/28 for non-fermentatives and 65/66 for others); and with vancomycin (30/30) and pristinamycin (29/30) among gram positives. On the other hand, the lowest susceptibilities were to amoxicilin (7/66), amoxicilin clavulonat (18/66) and cotrimoxazole (27/66) among gram negatives other than non-fermentatives. This study was designed to evaulate the effects of reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament on cartilage collagen and proteoglycan metabolism. Proteoglycan fragments (PF) and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) levels were assessed in synovial fluids aspirated from 17 patients preoperatively and at 1 st month postoperatively. Synovial fluids of 10 healthy knee served as controls. Both MMP-1 and proteoglycan fragments were found significantly elevated in pathological knees preoperatively with compare to control. The postoperative levels of MMP-1 and proteoglycans were also significantly higher than preoperative and control values. The development of an effective therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is one of the primary goals of all DMD/Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) research. Golden Retriever Muscular Dystrophy (GRMD), an animal model of DMD is a fatal degenerative myopathy. Unlike the mdx model, the GRMD dog more accurately reflects the phenotype shown by human DMG patients, making the model better suited for the investigation and assessment of potential therapeutic approaches. The GRMD mutation, a base change from A to G in the 3' splice acceptor site of intron 6, results in exon 7 skipping which disrupts the translational reading frame. …

Objective: To determine aneuploidy frequencies in pellet and swim-up semen fractions from 10 infertile men with severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) who were donating sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection and to determine whether the swim-up isolation method would successfully separate aneuploid from haploid sperm.

Design: Prospective study.

Setting: Infertility clinic and molecular genetics laboratory.

A plasmid bearing a cDNA copy of the genome of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), chimeric derivatives of the plasmid and a method of producing an infectious bovine viral diarrhea virus using the plasmid are disclosed. The invention relates to a plasmid DNA molecule that replicates easily in E. coli and contains a sufficient portion of the genome of BVDV, cloned as cDNA, to be a suitable template to produce RNA in vitro which, upon transfection into bovine cells, gives rise to infectious BVDV.
