The objective of this study was to compare the anti-inflammatory effects of NG -nitro L-arginine (L-NAME) and corticosteroid in Concanavalin A-induced uveitis in rats. Sixteen male Wistar rats were used. After general anesthesia, intravitreal 0.1 ml Concanavalin A (100mg/ml) was injected into the left eyes of the rats. The histochemical localization of thymosin \beta_4 was investigated for the first time in several bovine tissues, using the indirect immunofluorescent technique and the newly applied alkaline phosphatase anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP) antibody method. A polyclonal antiserum raised against the N-terminal fragment (1-14) of thymosin \beta_4, showing less than 0.1% crossreactivity with the second b-thymosin in calf tissues, thymosin \beta_9, was used. Positive reaction for thymosin \beta_4 was observed in the cytoplasm of all tissues studied, i.e., bovine spleen, thymus, lung, liver, kidney, lymph nodes and cardiac muscle. This study was planned to compare recurrence of goiters after thyroidectomy in patients who received prophylactic levothyroxine and patients who received no therapy. One hundred and twenty-six patients had been treated by bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy in the General Surgery Clinic of Karadeniz Technical University from 1987 to 1992. Eithy-eight of these patients were included in this study while the remaining patients were excluded as they were non contactable. They were divided into two groups. For most infectious diseases, increased formation of reactive oxygen species is secondary to the primary disease process. Some microorganisms are highly susceptible to exogenous reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) remove H 2 O 2 , and selenium is requird for the activity of GSH-Px. Therefore, to assess the status of GSH-Px and selenium in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), we determined serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity in 52 patients with CL and in 38 healthy controls. Cyclosporine-A (CsA) is widely used to prevent organ rejection in recipients of transplanted organs and also in the treatment of various systemic diseases. CsA has a number of side effects, including gingival overgrowth (GO). However, the pathogenesis of CsA-induced GO remains uncertain. It has been postulated that CsA alters fibroblast activity. CsA is transported in plasma by binding to lipid components. We have assessed tracheal intubating conditions in 45 ASA I-II children, aged 4-14 years undergoing elective ear, nose and throat surgery. After the induction dose of propofol 2.5 mgkg -1 , group I received alfentanil 10 µgkg -1 , group II received alfentanil 20 µgkg -1 and group III received atracurium 0.5 mgkg-1 for tracheal intubation. In the novel approach suggested here, we examined the use of polypeptide probes selected from artificial peptide libraries for the identification of the differences in dsDNA sequences which are potential targets for the genetic diseases. Pyk-2 is a protein tyrosine kinase, highly expressed in human hippocampus, dentate gyrus and olfactory bulb. In this study, polyclonal antibodies against the C-terminal of pyk-2, starting from Pro-759, were generated by injecting rabbits with the bacterially expressed GST fusion construct, generated by cloning the C-terminal domain of pyk-2 into pGEX-3X vector and affinity purification to increase the specificity of recognition. Endogeonus opioid peptides play an important role in the generation of the pre-ovulatory LH surge. We investigated the interrelationship between the oploid and indolaminergic systems in the regutalion of LH secretion, and the involvement of \mu-and \kappa-opioid subtypes in this process. The effects of cyclosporin A (CsA) on rat pancreatic islet \beta and D cells and plasma glucose levels at doses of 50 mg/kg body weight applied for 20 days were investigated. Fifteen Swiss Albino rats were used as the study group and 5 were the control group. Tympanic membrane perforations arise from a variety of causes. Some of them require myringoplasty. In this study, we used hyaluronic acid, a polysaccharide with high-molecular- weight which may be obtained commercially and affects modulations of cell function. An experimental myringoplasty was performed on rats in which a chronic dry tympanic membrane perforation was formed. While physiological saline was embedded in Gelfoam ® which was supported under and over the graft, in group 1, hyaluronic acid embedded gelfoam was used in group 2. The effect of primaquine on the enzymatic antioxidant defence mechanisms of erythrocytes were determined by measuring the activities of the below enzymes, before and after 30 minutes of incubation of hemolyzates with 1 mM primaquine at 37°C. Among the enzymes studied glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase seemed the most sensitive enzyme; 57 % and 78 % inhibition at zero (due to the binding of primaquine to NADP binding site) and 30 minutes of incubation (due to the reactive oxygen species), respectively. Since most secreening tests are not 100% accurate, the proportion of subjects screened positive in such a test cannot be used as an estimate of the population prevalence. Methods which take sensitivity and the specificity into consideration should be employed in such circumstances. Estimation of the population prevalence as defined by Gartand Buck may produce results which are outside the range of 0 to 1. A Bayesian approach avoids results of this kind, but requires complicated computations. Lew and Levy proposed an approximation to the Bayesian estimate of the population prevalence. It has been estimated that between 2% to 28% of the general adult population has radiographic evidence of elongated styloid process. In adults, the mean radiographic lenght of the styloid process is 20 to 30 mm and its tip is located between the external and internal carotid arteries, just lateral to the tonsillar fossa. Eagle's syndrome occurs when an elongated styloid process or ossified stylohyoid ligament causes recurrent throat pain or foreign body sensation, dysphagia, or facial pain. One of the factors affecting the accuracy of readings of blood pressure is the equipment used. Defects or inaccuracy of aneroid sphygmomanometers may be source of error in blood pressure measurement. We inspected 100 sphygmomanometers for physical defects and assessed their accuracy against a standard mercury manometer at four different pressure points. 46 of the 100 sphygmomanometers were determined to be intolerant (deviation from the mercury manometer by greater than±3 mm Hg at two or more of the test points). Diastolic dysfunction is characterized by increased resistance to ventricular filling, inappropriate upward shift of the diastolic pressure-volume relationship and exercise intolerance. Inappropriate tachycardia, decreased diastolic compliance and impaired systolic relaxation lead to diastolic dysfunction. Optimal therapy will depend on the type and pathophysiologic phase of disease. Doppler echocardiography is a valuable tool to diagnose diastolic dysfunction and therapeutic effects of drugs on diastolic function in different groups of patients. The vitamin D receptor (VDR), a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily, is an integral part of the body's calcium regulatory system. Mammalian and avian VDR genes were isolated, sequenced and characterized. In this study we cloned the vitamin D receptor from amphibians. We received a cDNA library prepared from amphibian (frog) tissues and prepared a cDNA probe based on the avian VDR. We screened the library and located the positive clones. The effects of diets containing 2% and 4% calcium (Ca) on deoxycorticosteron (DOC) salt hypertension were studied in 29 male rats weighting 210-260 g. Rats were categorized into four groups: Group I: control rats (6), group II: DOC hypertensive group (n=8), group III: DOC-low Ca diet (2% CaCl 2 ) (8) and group IV: DOC-high Ca diet (4% CaCl_2 ) (n=7). We evaluated the effect of nifedip-ine, an L-type voltage sensitive Ca+2 channel (VSCC) blocker, on the onset of neuronal damage induced by transient ischemia of guinea pig retinas in vivo. The animals were divided into two groups. In the first group 2 mg/kg Nifedipine was administered intraperi-toneally, while only 2 cc/kg NaCl 0.9% solution was given to the second group thirty minutes before the ischemic insult. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential teratogenic effects of electromagnetic fields on the skeletal systems of rat fetuses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five pregnant rats, which had been exposed to electromagnetic fields with frequencies of vertical 50 Hz and horizontal 20 kHz and a total maximum intensity of 10 milligauss, during their pregnancies, were the study group, while 15 pregnant rats were the control group. This study was carried out on a representative sample consisting of 429 households in Gaziantep. The prevalance of diseases with diarrhoea was found to be 22.9% among children under five years old in the two weeks preceding the survey. It was observed that 51.3% of children with diarrhoea were taken to a medical facility, the mean duration of the diarrhoea was 4.5±3.8 days, and the rate of children with diarrhoea during the preceding 24 hours was 11.8%. There is no ideal surgical technique for cervical spondylosis. The choice of surgical procedure remains controversial. A series of 25 patients who had undergone subtotal vertebrectomy and iliac bone fusion between 1985 and 1995 were reviewed. There were 19 men and 6 women with an average age of 55.6 years. All of the patients had cervical myelopathy and /or radiculopathy due to multi-level spondylosis and 7 with associated ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. The anatomical variations of the brachial plexus in human have clinical significance to surgeons, radiologists and anatomists. We studied some variations in the formation of 130 brachial plexuses in sixty-five infant cadavers (34 males, 31 females; aged 1-7 days). The brachial plexus consisted of the 5 th , 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th cervical spinal nerves and 1 st thoracic spinal nerve (69.23%).
