Gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intralaryngeally with swine Chlamydia trachomatis strain R33 or orally with swine C. trachmatis strain R27. Archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from piglets euthanatized 4–7 days postinoculation were examined by in situ hybridization for C. trachomatis nucleic acid using a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled DNA probes that targeted specific ribosomal RNA or omp1 mRNA molecules of the swine C. trachomatis strains. Positive hybridization signals were detected in bronchial epithelial cells, bronchiolar epithelial cells, pneumocytes, alveolar and interstitial macrophages, and jejunal and ileal enterocytes. Alcoholism is transmitted in families. The complexity and heterogeneity of this disorder has made it difficult to identify specific genetic correlates. One design with the potential to do so is the family-based association study, in which the frequencies of genetic polymorphisms are compared between affected and nonaffected members. Reduced central serotonin neurotransmission is associated with features of an antisocial subtype of alcoholism, although a primary deficit has not been traced to a particular component. Genetic markers related to the serotonergic system have been identified, located, and cloned. If associations can be discovered, the development process for pharmacotherapy could be facilitated. …

The question how fish oil (FO) and soybean oil (SO) change the state of antioxidant and the lipid peroxidation in liver and plasma of rats and the protective role of vitamin E were investigated. Urinary-tract infections (UTI) are common infectious diseases in childhood. The presence of UTI may be an indicator of a serious genitourinary (GU) abnormality that requires medical intervention. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of children discharged with a diagnosis of UTI from the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, between July 1, 1991 and June 30, 1994. The purpose of the study was to determine how many patients had underlying GU abnormalities, the specific type of abnormality, and the microorganism causing the UTI. We investigated the effect of antibiotic or G-CSF plus antibiotic therapy given to E. coli septic rats. In our study, 80 rats were inoculated transperitoneally with 1 ml of a solution containing 10 7 colony forming units per milliliter of E. coli. Rats were divided into four treatment groups before being inoculaded with E. coli in a random fashion. Therapy was then started with cefotaxime (150 mg/kg intraperitonelally) and either Granulocyte-Colony Stimulation Factor (G-CSF; 30 µg/kg intarperitoneally) or placebo 24 hours after inoculation of E. coli for 3 consective days. Purpose: To evaluate the vascular patency of microanastomoses in rats with color Doppler ultrasonography. Materials and Methods: 15 superficial femoral and 15 carotid arterial end-to-end anastomoses were performed in 30 white rats. All arteries were evaluated pre- and post-operatively by color Doppler ultrasonography with a 7.5 mHz linear transducer (Acuson 128HP). All results were correlated with surgery after final Doppler evaluation. Results: The subjects were divided into three groups: (a) patent anastomosis; (b) partial occlusive anastomosis; (c) total occlusive anastomosis. Plasmodium berghei is the rodent equivalent of Plasmodium falciparum which causes cerebral malaria in humans. However, P. berghei does not cause cerebral malaria in BALB/c mice, instead it leads to parasitemia, fever and some degree of liver damage. Although different aspects of immunological response have been intensively investigated in malaria; this the first time the in vitro effect of P. berghei antigen lysate on murine NK cytotoxic activity was studied. A two-year old male infant with generalized BCG lymphadenitis is presented. There was no obvious immunodeficiency disorder detected in the patient. BCG vaccine had been given at two months of age, and the lymphadenopathy developed at 21 months of age. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the lymph node on Giemsa stain revealed macrophages very similar to Gaucher cells. These cells also resembled macrophages seen in lepromatous leprosy. They were engorged with acid fast bacilli and had streaked or wrinkled cytoplasm. Mycobacterium bovis was cultured from the lymph nodes and the patients improved with antituberculous therapy.

Galactosialidosis is an autosomal recessive disease with combined deficiency of two lysosomal enzymes due to the lack of a protective protein. We report on a boy with infantile galactosialidosis who has an intermediate phenotype and vitamin D deficiency rickets. Due to the possible role of vitamin D deficiency in the pathogenesis of dysostosis multiplex we recommend that patients with lysosomal storage disease should be supplemented with vitamin D.

NADPH-d reaction was performed on nine male Sprague-Dawley rats and morphometry of NADPH-d(+) cells was investigated in caudate-putamen, globus pallidus and ventral pallidum. In caudate-putamen we observed intensely stained NADPH-d (+) cells. Maximum diameter and minimum diameters of the NADPH-d (+) cells in caudate-putamen was measured as 19.19±0.04 \mum and 10.42±0.12 \mum, consequently. In globus pallidus, moderately stained NADPH-d (+) cells were observed. We measured the maximum and minimum diameters of the NADPH-d (+) cells as 19.93±0.24 \mum and 10.42±0.12 \mum, consequently. The consumption of coagulation inhibitors will augment coagulation triggered excessively in sepsis. The determination of levels of these inhibitors may open new substitution treatment schedules to overcome the plateau of the achieved improvement ratio with antimicrobial treatment. PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) immunoreactivity in the uterus of mature rats was investigated after long term administration of clomiphene citrate and ovariectomy. In the luminal epithelium and glandular epithelium and endometrial stroma regions, few PCNA-immunoreactive cells were observed. PCNA reactivity was estimated for the luminal and glandular epithelium and for the stromal cells. Treatment of clomiphene citrate decreased the proliferation of the luminal epithelial cell and stromal cells to the same extent as ovariectomy. The method of Thallium - 201- single - photon emission computed tomography (Tl-201 SPECT) have been commonly used to detect uncontractile but viable myocardium in patients with ischemic left ventricular dysfunction. This experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of gentamicin (GM) on the neuroepithelial morphology of the posterior crista ampullares (PCA) of the adult chinchilla. The experiment focused on hair cell (HC) morphology to monitor GM's dose-dependent effects and also to define an ototoxically-efficient and safe dose what would subsequently be used in a time course study. Cigarette smoke contains high concentrations of oxidants and reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term cigarette smoking on glutathione (GSH) levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Nineteen current cigarette smokers and seven healthy nonsmoking volunteers were included in the study. BAL was performed by infusion of five sequential 20 ml aliquots and each aliquot was immediately aspirated. The levels of GSH were determined in BAL fluids. During the dissection of an amputed leg, we discovered a combined variation involving the branching of the popliteal artery and tibial nerve. The popliteal artery showed a trifurcation pattern, and one of its branches, the posterior tibial artery, was hypoplastic. In addition, a small branch arising from the tibial nerve in the upper part of the leg distally crossed the peroneal artery and contributed to the medial plantar nerve. Nosocomial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized children, and the urinary tract is one of the most common sites of these infections. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 1,221 children discharged with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) from July 1, 1991 to June 30, 1994. Of the 1,221 UTIs, there were 137 (11.2%) cases of nosocomial UTI (NUTI) in 136 patients.
