Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) is known to be produced by novel or unaccustomed exercise, especially high force eccentric contractions. Histological myofibre disruption, force loss and muscle soreness are associated with EIMD and have implications for sporting performance. Traditional practices of assessing the extent of disruption to the myofibres is by performing needle biopsies and subsequently analysing the histology of the fibres. Autism is a severe developmental disorder that was first described by Kanner in 1943. It is characterised by four major criteria: marked social deficits, delay in language development, a restricted range of stereotyped repetitive behaviours and onset of the disease within the first three years of life. The last decade of research has provided support for a strong genetic basis in the aetiology of autism. Firstly, a number of genetic conditions, such as fragile X syndrome, chromosome 15 anomalies and tuberous sclerosis, have been associated with autism. Telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein, has been described as an essential component of highly proliferative cells, which stabilizes the telomeres and avoids cellular senescence. Telomerase has been identified in various embryonic cell stages, hematopoietic cells, and in >85% of tumor tissue biopsies analyzed. Biodegradable implants are an alternative to metallic implants and have the advantage of not being necessary to remove once the fracture has healed. Twenty-two patients with fractures were treated with biodegradable implants. There were osteolysis in eleven patients; however, no serious complication was encountered. Although biodegradable implants are expensive, a second surgical procedure to remove the implants is not necessary, relieving the patient of the related costs and risks.

Exposure to low-intensity microwave radiation for prolonged periods is known to be a potential factor inducing visceral damage. There are several studies in the literature demonstrating the harmful effects of such radiation on the kidney of laboratory animals. This prospective study was designed to investigate lymphocyte subsets in acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN). Peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled CD3, CD4, CD8, CD14, CD19, CD45, CD56, CD45RA and CDW29 monoclonal antibodies by flow cytometry. Twenty patients aged 14-22 years who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for APSGN were evaluated during the 1st and 12th weeks of the of disease. Twenty-four age-matched healthy subjects served as controls. We have analyzed telomeres in four hamster cell lines to investigate how telomeres look in cells grown past the Hayflick limit. In all four cell lines telomeric signals were seen after detection with two different sensitive in situ methods (FISH with PNA probes and PRINS). The telomeric signals were not very strong, suggesting that the repeats are very short, but were nevertheless clearly visible. With the PRINS technique, it was further possible to probe also for the presence of variant telomeric repeats at the chromosome ends. The role of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the developing neocortex was reexamined by comparing its expression in rats, mice and guinea pigs, following the protocol for acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (described in Sendemir et al., 1996) in order to determine the suitability of the breeding colony at UludaÛ University for use as an animal model. Identification of 78 Candida isolates was carried out by a commercial Fungichrom test kit, the reliability of which was further confirmed by conventional biochemical tests and the API 20C kit. Differentiation between different Candida species was also observed when sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of whole cell proteins was used. The most frequently isolated species of yeast from vaginal swabs obtained from patients was Candida albicans, which accounted for 39 of 78 (50.00%) of the isolates from women in Ankara. The success rate of a repaired torn meniscus is not more than 70%. Gene transfer to healing soft tissues appears to be a feasible method for manipulating the healing process. In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of gene transfer to meniscal tissue we tried to transfer a reporter gene ( Echerichia coli, b-galactosidase gene) by using HVJ-liposome mediated gene transfer. In this study, the results of anti- ovalbumin (OVA) monoclonal antibody production and characterization are reported. Splenocytes from OVA-hyperimmune Balb/C mouse were fused with F0 myeloma cells and resulting hybridoma cells were selected in hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thymidine containing medium. A total of 37 HAT resistant hybridomas were obtained. Upon testing the hybridoma supernatants in OVA and mouse immunoglobulin G specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we observed that two of the hybridomas secreted OVA specific antibodies. In this experimental study, we investigated whether vitamin E and EGb 761 have any influence on endotoxemic rats and liver histopathology. This study was conducted to examine the development, progression and reversibility of cartilage lesions in juvenile rats that had been given ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone. Four-week-old rats were treated with an oral dose of 900 mg/kg/day of ofloxacin for 7 days. The present experimental study was carried out on rats subjected to ischemia and reperfusion. The effects of allopurinol on mucus, an important component of the stomach mucosal barrier, were investigated. Twenty-one Swiss Albino rats, each weighing 200-250 g, were used. On the control group, no treatment was performed, while the sham operation group was subjected to 30 minutes of ischemia and 20 minutes of reperfusion. The protective roles of low-dose dopamine and mannitol infusion in the renal function of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery were compared in 36 patients by measuring urine N-acetyl-\beta-D- glucosaminidase activity, serum and urinary creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and urine output. The patients were randomly selected and received a continuous infusion of dopamine, 3 µg/kg/min (Group I), mannitol, 1 mg/kg/h (Group II), no medication (Group III) before the induction of anaesthesia. The roles of terminal carbohydrate moieties of serum glycoproteins in their recognition and uptake by receptors and in their rapid removal from the circulation are well established. However, little is known about the detailed structure of the terminal glycan chains in apolipoproteins and their compatibility with the known ligand specificity of carbohydrate recognition systems. The carbohydrate moieties of apolipoproteins in human serum chylomicrons and VLDL were examined. Objective: We examined the reliability of end-tidal CO_2 (ETCO_2 ) level in predicting mortality after endotracheal intubation in emergency situations. Methods: In this prospective study, the reliability of ETCO_2 monitoring in the emergency setting as a useful predictor of outcome was investigated in 36 adult patients with pending cardiopulmonary collapse. The cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedure was performed as usual and the cardiac rhythm, arterial O_2 saturation, non- invasive blood pressure and ETCO_2 levels were continuously monitored in all the patients. Hearing screening of neonates is the key to preventing the most severe consequences of congenital hearing loss. In this paper, the auditory brain stem responses (ABR) of neonates at high risk for hearing impairment at Marmara University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are reported. One hundred fifty-four high-risk neonates underwent screening by ABR carried out according to the US Joint Committee on Hearing 1994 Position Statement. In this study, the uses of topical clindamycin phosphate and azelaic acid were compared from point of clinical efficacy and emergence of resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Each group contained 20 patients. Pre- and post-treatment acne grades and comparison of two groups were evaluated by using the Wilcoxon and Spearman statistical techniques. The sensitivity of CNS to azelaic acid and to clindamycin phosphate were searched by microbroth dilution technique. Azelaic acid was found more effective in reducing acne grade.
