The effects of the administration of a single dose of garlic on the aerobic performance of college endurance athletes were investigated in this study. Ten trained male athletes participated voluntarily in this study. A 900-mg dose of dried garlic powder or placebo was administered randomly in a double-blind cross-over fashion. Five hours after ingestion of the tablets, the subjects underwent an incremental treadmill running test according to the Bruce protocol until subjective exhaustion. Higher titers of autoantibodies have been reported in recent studies of depressed patients. In an attempt to investigate the presence of antiphospholipid autoantibodies in patients with depression, sera from both patients and healthy controls were tested for immunoglobulin G and M anticardiolipin and antiphosphatidylserine autoantibodies. We tested positive sera for antiphosphatidylserine (APSA) and anticardi- olipin autoantibody (ACA) in 10 dysthymic, 19 major depressive, and 20 healthy subjects. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of the presence of hypersplenism, antiplatelet antibody and anticardiolipin antibody, which are thought to be important factors, on the development of thrombocytopenia in patients with cirrhosis with viral etiology. Methods: This study includes 44 patients with cirrhosis related to HBV and HCV, and 12 healthy control subjects. Spleen size was evaluated by ultrasonography, the presence of antiplatelet antibody by flow cytometry, and IgG and IgM isotypes of anticardiolipin anti- body by enzyme immunoassay. Over the past decade, there has been considerable growth in interest in the application of stress management techniques for the preparation of patients needing to undergo noxious medical procedures. Here, we studied state-trait anxiety in women awaiting three different radiological examinations; abdominal ultrasonography, mammography, and hysterosalpingography, which involved various degrees of intrusiveness, and low, intermediate, and high levels of pain and physical/emotional discomfort respectively. We aimed to investigate whether the degree of anxiety corresponded to the level of invasiveness. The level of possible microbial cross-contamination in an automatic dental radiograph processor was investigated. Pure cultures of Staphylococcus aureusATCC 6538 P, Escherichia coli ATCC 1103 and Candida utilis ATCC 18804 and a mixed culture of these three microorganisms were prepared. In the first five days of the week, 90 films contaminated with one of these pure cultures were developed. This was followed by the processing of 36 uncontaminated films that were developed in the last two days of the week. Polymeric foams seem to have potential for use in many research areas such as cell seeding and macromolecule or drug loading. Three factors were studied to evaluate the efficiency of foams as drug carrier and releasing agents. Effect of polymeric properties was examined by using two types of polymers (PHBV 7 and PHBV 22) differing only in their valerate (copolymer) content. The other factor studied was the effect of loading extent on release kinetics and rate. The results showed an unexpected inverse proportionality between drug loading and release rate. In order to determine the effect of endogenous protein synthesis on CHL cell adhesion, the initial attachment of these cells to tissue culture dishes was measur ed in the pr esence of 1µgml -1 emetine, in which protein synthesis was inhibited by 97% as determined by labeling the cells with [ 3 5 S]-methio-nine. The effects of acute Grayanotoxin-I (GTX-I) administration on hepatic and renal functions in rats were investigated. GTX-I was administrated to the animals of groups 1, 2 and 3 at a single i.p. dose of 1 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg and 0.25 mg/kg respectively, and group 4 (control) received i.p. saline (0.9 %) solution only. Megakaryocytopoiesis is a complicated phenomenon which involves the proliferation of progenitor cells, formation of a polyploid nucleus, cytoplasmic changes and formation of thrombocytes. It has been suggested that megakaryocytopoiesis resembles erythropoiesis. It is well known that iron is a required element for the proliferation of erythrocytes, lymphocytes and cancer cells but no consensus has yet been reached about its role in thrombocytopoiesis. Although thrombocytosis is generally found in patients with iron deficiency anemia, thrombocytopenia is also observed. To investigate the influence of air pollution on birth weight, information on maternal and infant characteristics was collected from 458 mothers of infants less than one year of age born in 1995 and under observation at a mother and child health center in Ankara. In addition, the obstetrical histories of 520 infants born in 1990 were collected from the delivery room records of a maternity hospital. Daily air pollution data were obtained and mean monthly values were used for statistical analysis. Clinical and laboratory features and the outcome of ten cases (nine female, one male) (age range 7-14 years, mean 10.7±2.2 years) with autoimmune hepatitis are described. The diagnosis was established by the laboratory features of elevated serum transferases, hypergammaglobulinemia, presence of autoantibodies, liver histology, excluding viral and metabolic etiologies and by a prompt response to corticosteroid therapy. One patient was associated with celiac disease. Chronic active hepatitis was present histologically in seven children while in three, cirrhosis with portal hypertension had already been established. In this randomized, double-blinded study, the preemptive effects of intravenous and epidural fentanyl analgesia were compared with post-incisional analgesia in 40 patients undergoing orthophedic surgery of the lower extremities. Patients were randomly allocated to one of two groups; intravenous or epidural analgesia, with twenty patients in each group. General anesthesia was induced with thiopentone 5-6 mgkg -1 and maintained with 0.8-1.0% isoflurane and 66% nitrous oxide in 33% O 2 . Dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP) is the most common corticosteroid used in the treatment of edema paired with brain tumors (1, 2). As with other corticosteroids, DSP has some adverse effects on the cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems. The objective of this study was to minimize the adverse effects of DSP and to extend the release time of the drug from microspheres by encapsulating with Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). Lung cancer is the major cancer in Turkey; 45% of the deaths due to cancer in Turkish males are from lung cancer. There are 8 histopathological types of lung cancer, and most types have several genomic/genetic alterations, including amplification of oncogenes. The current study evaluated the ras oncogene in human lung cancers from Turkish patients. Thirty-six normal and pathological lung tissue specimens were obtained from patients with chest disease during surgery, frozen at -86°C, and processed within 2-3 months. To determine the influence of circulatory factors on recovery from neuromuscular block, we measured train of four (TOF) response in the arm with tourniquet inflated during TOF = 0.1 and compared this with data from a control arm in 40 patients under fentanyl-propofol-nitrous oxide-isoflurane anaesthesia. Patients were allocated randomly to receive either atracurium 0.5 mg/kg (n=20) or vecuronium 0.1 mg/kg (n=20). The TOF response of ulnar nerve in both arms was recorded in every 12 sec. Lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is an enzyme responsible for the formation of most cholesteryl esters (CE) in human serum. In this study investigating the effects of exercise and smoking on LCAT acitvity, serum triglyceride (Tg), total cholesterol (C), HDL-C, HDL3-C and LCAT activity were measured in the sera of 29 nonsmoking and 36 smoking (at least one packet/day) young men before and after their 6-week military training period. LCAT activity was determined by measuring the amount of cholesterol esters produced in the incubation of serum and reconstituted HDL including [ 14 C]-cholesterol. The purpose of this study was to determine normal liver and spleen size variations in school-age children by US. Sonographic measurements were taken with an age and sex stratified random sample of 358 healthy children (188 boys, 170 girls) between the ages of 7 and 12 years. The weight and height of the children were assessed and then the body surface area (BSA) of each child was calculated. Bacterial translocation is an important etiologic factor in multisystem organ failure and sepsis, which have a high mortality rate. To determine the effects of growth hormone on bacterial translocation, an experimental study was performed. Twenty pathogen-free rabbits were divided into two groups each containing 10 rabbits. After loop obstruction was performed, the rabbits in the control group were given saline solution whereas the rabbits in the study group received growth hormone. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the L-type voltage dependent Ca^2^+ channel blocker, nimodipine, in kainate induced toxicity in retinal ganglion cells of mice. Kainate in 10mg/kg was administered intraperitoneally following the vehicle or nimodipine. Nimodipine, 45 minutes prior to kainate in 10, 15, 25, 50, 100 and 250 mg/kg doses was administered intraperitoneally. Surprisingly, nimodipine potentiated the ganglional cell death induced by kainate, with respect to the control and kainate+vehicle treated group.
