Toluene is a widely used solvent in different industrial areas and has a depressant effect on the central nervous system. In medicolegal cases, for the possible influence of toluene on actions or conditions prior to death, a reliable indicator of exposure must be precisely investigated. We developed an appropriate method for toluene analysis and investigate the blood-urine toluene levels and urinary ortho-cresol levels in toluene-exposed workers. The thalamus is one of the most vulnerable areas for intracerebral hemorrhages. In this study, we investigated the parameters of thalamic hemorrhage such as risk factors, initial complaints, neurologic findings and the prognostic effects of the presence or absence of ventricular penetration, as well as the volume and size of hematoma. A total of 57 patients with thalamic hemorrhage, whose diagnosis was confirmed by cranial computerized tomography, were evaluated. The most significant risk factor was hypertension, while the most common initial clinic symptom was incontinence. A prospective, observational study was carried out to assess the efficacy of Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ) as an outpatient procedure during the first visit of patients with abnormal cervical smears. One hundred and seven women were treated with LLETZ under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure at their first visit. All patients were followed up routinely with colposcopy, cytology, and also histology where appropriate for at least 6 months. Objective: To evaluate the serum triglyceride and lipoprotein-cholesterol levels in subjects with and without luteal phase defect. Method: Early follicular and midluteal phase serum triglycerides, lipoprotein-cholesterol and progesterone levels were assessed in 19 subjects with and in 73 subjects without luteal phase defect. The criterion for diagnosis of luteal phase defect was histological development of endometrium delayed for more than 2 days according to the chronological day. Selecting the individually suitable form of and location for the major connectors in partially edentulous patients is important. The purpose of classifying removable partial dentures (RPDs) is to simplify identification. Classification also allows for a longitudinal comparison of various classes of RPDs as well as the determination of whether the teaching of RPD design is consistent with the relative frequencies of RPD use. Colicins are bactericidal macromolecules in protein structures and they are produced by some strains of Escherichia coli and Shigella, which are members of the Enterobacteriaceae. They have a bactericidal effect on the same species or closely related bacteria, but have no effect on the strains which produce them. In this study, 129 E. coli strains isolated from urine samples of patients in Izmir and Manisa were examined for colicin production, and the colicinogenic strains were examined for their colicin types by means of Horak specific indicator strains. Antifungal activity was determined by the tube dilution method on different extracts of Symphytum sylvaticum Boiss. subsp. sepulcrale (Boiss. & Bal.) Greuter & Burdet var. sepulcrale. The antifungal activity of the isolated compound from the root alkaloid fraction (Echimidine-N-Oxide) was also tested against ten fungal cultures. The activity was found to be mainly due to Echimidine-N-Oxide (ENO). The quantitative determination of ENO was also carried out with capillary gas chromatography in the roots and the aerial parts of the plant.

Objective: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), first described in 1872 by Moritz Kaposi, is a spindle cell, multifocal vascular tumor. Despite the intense work on the pathogenesis of KS, its etiology remains in doubt. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of apoptosis in chronic hepatitis B, and correlate it with disease severity. We studied the expression of the Fas antigen (FasAg) and Bcl-2 protein in a group of patients with chronic hepatitis B at various stages of the disease. Materials and Methods: Forty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups. Experimental pancreatitis was induced by ligating the main biliopancreatic duct. As the practice of outpatient paediatric surgery advances, the search continues for anaesthesia that provides rapid smooth induction, stable patient haemodynamics, rapid emergence and minimal unpleasant side effects. Therefore, this study was designed to compare the haemodynamic changes, emergence and recovery characteristics of remifentanil-propofol (TIVA) and sevoflurane anaesthesia for adenoidectomy with bilateral myringotomy and insertion of tubes and/or tonsillectomy (ENT surgery) in children. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of sublingual valsartan in a group of patients with hypertensive urgency. Forty-one patients with hypertensive urgency and systolic blood pressure >200 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure >100 mmHg were studied in an emergency room. Supine blood pressure readings were taken and the patients were given 80 mg of valsartan sublingually. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at 15 min intervals over a 90 min period. Systolic blood pressure decreased from 211.22±14.65 mmHg to 158.17±15.48 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure dropped from 120.12±13.44 mmHg to 93.05±6.01 mmHg. The effects of acute and chronic perineural treatment of the rat saphenous nerve with Teucrium polium (L.) extract on the conduction property of primary afferent nerve fibers and carrageenan-induced skin inflammation were studied. Direct application of 2.0% T. polium extract to the nerve trunk caused immediate complete inhibition of compound action potentials (CAPs) of all types of primary afferent nerve fibers. Partial recovery of CAPs was seen in up to 37.5% of Aab-fibers, 30.4% of Ad-fibers and 32.4% for C-fibers over one hour after removal of the extract. The antioxidant activities of water, ethanol, and ether extracts of the leaves of Cydonia vulgaris Pers. were determined by the thiocyanate method. The antioxidant activity of water extract was increased with the increasing amount of extract (200 µg-1000µg) added to the linoleic acid emulsion. Ether extract was the most effective antioxidant among the extracts. Like antioxidant activity, the reducing power of water extract was concentration dependent. However, ethanol extract was the highest in reducing power, and ether extract was the lowest. We investigated the properties of action potential after-potentials in cultured dorsal root ganglion neurones from neonatal rats using the whole cell patch clamp technique. The aims of this study were to characterize after-potentials and investigate the possible influences of Ca^{2+}-induced Ca^{2+}release (CICR) on neuronal excitability. The reversal potentials of action potential after-depolarizations and after-hyperpolarizations were estimated. Although evidence for both Ca^{2+}-activated chloride and potassium conductances was obtained, the data indicated that the after-potentials were contaminatied by a variety of distinct ionic events. Apamin was used to attenuate potassium conductances and appeared to enhance the after-depolarizations due to Ca^{2+}-activated chloride conductances. …

Various relations between apolipoprotein E (apo E) and diabetic nephropathy have been reported. In this study, the question of whether there is any relation between apo E genotypes and microalbuminuria in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus was examined. Twenty-one male and 25 female patients, with ages the range of 37-62 years (mean 51.7±7.5) with type-2 diabetes mellitus were studied. The apo E genotypes were determined by PCR amplification of the 227 bp region followed by CfoI digestion to release specific band patterns. The 8kDa protein (ubiquitin) is a member of the small heat shock protein (hsb) family. Ubiquitin may additionally be involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Intracellular accumulation of ubiquitin has been detected in patients with neurodegenerative disease, brain ischemia, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and haemodialysis. Sixteen biopsy samples from patients with psoriasis who were treated by PUVA and the same samples from these patients before PUVA treatment were investigated by immunohistochemistry on formalin-fixed paraffin- embedded tissue sections, using anti-ubiquitin antibody. The numbers of immunocom-promised individuals increase as programmes for organ transplantation and chemotherapy of malignant disease advance. Pulmonary infections, which progress rapidly, are one of the major clinical problems in these groups. This study was designed to evaluate the microbiology of pneumonia in immunocompromised patients and to determine the role of Legionella pneumophila. Immunocompromised patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy, diagnosed as pneumonia with clinical and radiographic findings and routine laboratory tests were included in the study. Recent studies have also shown that some enteral formulas including certain nutrients like glutamine could provide more benefit than the standard formulas. In this study, the tracheal tissues of rats inhaling cigarette smoke passively during different periods were examined by light and electron microscopy. Malonaldehyde, erythrocyte catalase and arginase levels were also measured. Three groups were formed and a total of 15 Wistar male rats weighing 200-250 g were used. Rats assigned to the first and second groups were made to inhale cigarette smoke for 30 and 60 minutes respectively for a total of 3 months. The aims of this study were to determine the role of interstitial and glomerular myofibroblasts in the progression of various glomerulonephritis, and to assess the value of myofibroblasts in determining long-term renal outcome. The biopsy specimens of 42 primary glomerulonephritis cases were reviewed and stained immunohistochemically with alpha smooth muscle actin antibody. The serum creatine level was compared to the pathological changes. The interstitial alpha smooth muscle actin staining correlated with the serum creatine level at the time of biopsy. In this study, the effects of sulfur dioxide (SO_2) ,a common pollutant in urban air, on t-butyl hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress in rat lung tissues were examined. Ten young rats and 10 adult rats were exposed to SO_2 while another 10 young rats and 10 adult rats made up the control groups.
