The aim of this study was to design a simple method for detecting the amyloid A4 protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients who had severe brain trauma caused by traffic or other accidents and to evaluate its diagnostic and prognostic value. For this purpose, a sandwich type ELISA assay was used. A4, a 4kDa protein of 39-43 amino acids, is a metabolic product of a membrane-spanning, 695-770 aa, precursor molecule, the b-amyloid precursor protein (b-APP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of various disinfectants in different concentrations against embryonated Toxocara canis eggs. For this purpose, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% iodine, 2% glutaraldehyde, 10% benzalkonium chloride, 7% sodium hypochloride, 1% potassium permanganate, 70% ethyl alcohol, 10% potassium hydroxide and 3% phenol solutions were used as the disinfectants. This study was performed both in vitro and in-vivo. In the in vitro experiment, T. canis eggs were treated with disinfectant solutions in different time intervals, and larval motility was observed under X400 magnification with an inverted microscope. Contradictory results have been reported from various studies regarding the effect of age on susceptibility to oxidative damage. Using different parameters, we carried out a comparative study on the erythrocytes and erythrocyte membranes of healthy elderly and young adults to determine how resistance to oxidative damage is affected by aging. Thin layer chromatography and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions were used to estimate changes in membrane phospholipids and cytoskeletal proteins, respectively. Our results showed that these components of intact erythrocytes incubated with cumene hydroperoxide (CumOOH), a powerful oxidising agent, remained unchanged in both age groups. BACKGROUND: Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for approximately 50% of breast cancer families with more than four affected cases, whereas exonic mutations in p53, PTEN, CHK2 and ATM may account for a very small proportion. It was recently reported that an intronic variant of p53--G13964C--occurred in three out of 42 (7.1%) 'hereditary' breast cancer patients, but not in any of 171 'sporadic' breast cancer control individuals (P = 0.0003). If this relatively frequent occurrence of G13964C in familial breast cancer and absence in control individuals were confirmed, then this would suggest that the G13964C variant plays a role in …

The levels of interleukin-1beta, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin 6 in gingival crevicular fluid of phenytoin-treated patients (from sites exhibiting overgrowth and sites not exhibiting overgrowth) and control subjects were investigated. Six epileptic patients exhibiting severe phenytoin-induced gingival overgrowth, 12 patients with chronic gingivitis and 11 subjects with clinically healthy periodontium were included in the study. The cytokine levels were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and expressed as ng/2 sites. Previous research on exercise and bone mineral density (BMD) has established that increases in BMD are site specific, responding to unusual strain and particularly to high magnitude loading. The positive Gz forces generated during high performance flying provide all three variables. Naumann, Bennell and Wark (2000) investigated the effects of moderate gravitational force on the BMD of fighter pilots. The pilots in this study had significant increases in BMD and bone mineral content (BMC) for the thoracic spine, pelvis and total body. Hemoglobin is not normally present in sputum, urine or feces except in minute amounts. Demonstration of the presence of hemoglobin in these materials is an important diagnostic clue that usually implies bleeding within the respiratory, urinary or gastroentestinal tract, respectively. Objective: To determine the mechanism of action of Methotrexate and Vepesid on the HEp-2 cells isolated from human laryngeal cancer cells morphologically and flow cytometrically (G1, G2, S and PI). Materials and Methods: The HEp-2 continuous cell line was used. Cultivation of the cells was realized in EMEM medium with 10% fetal bovine serum at an atmosphere of 37ºC with 5% CO_2. H. influenzae is a fastidious bacteria, so the selection of a reliable method for in-vitro susceptibility tests is particularly important. The E-test is a practical method for detecting in-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of antibiotics by MIC values. This study was performed using the E-test for direct patient management and in order to obtain epidemiological data on H. influenzae. The detection of antimicrobial agent resistance among fifty-seven H. influenzae isolates from lower respiratory tract infections in childhood was studied by the E-test. Activating point mutations occurring in either one of the three ras proto-oncogene families are common genetic alterations in human and animal neoplasms. The expression of major histocompatibility antigens class II (MHC II) in renal diseases has been studied extensively in the tubulo-interstitial compartment, while there are few articles about their expression in the glomeruli. Absorption of zinc by preterm infants from a synthetic milk labelled extrinsically with 70Zn tracer was determined by faecal monitoring. Six male preterm babies with a mean gestational age of 31±2.9 weeks and a mean birth weight of 1.23±0.24 kg were studied for three balance periods of 72 h with intervals ranging from 6 to 30 days. Chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement (CIGE) occasionally exhibits some similarities with hemangioma (Hm) by means of the clinical and histopathological features of gingiva. When compared with hemangioma, CIGE is more frequently encountered by the dental profession. However, Hm is rarely seen on gingiva and it has a non-inflammatory nature and mostly congenital origin. From prokaryotes to eukaryotes or from invertebrates to vertebrates, all organisms have developed various adaptive mechanisms to survive within a wide range of growth temperatures. An important part of the cold adaptation mechanism occurs at the level of the cytoplasmic membrane. Cold shock affects the membrane composition and organisation to maintain the optimum membrane function. Cold shock also affects cell division. The temperature downshift results in a growth lag. During the lag phase the organism changes the composition of the cytoplasmic membrane and synthesis sets of specific proteins called cold shock proteins or cold induced proteins.

Corticosteroids, widely used in the treatment of collagen tissue diseases, increase the number of neutrophils and decrease the total numbers of lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. In addition, corticosteroids alter important functional activities of both lymphocytes and monocytes. They suppress the bactericidial activities of phagocytes. In this manner, the resistance to infections is reduced. Cytotoxic drugs can have profound effects on the production and function of both phagocyte cells and lymphocytes. Caudate hemorrhage is a rare stroke syndrome that accounts for only 3-7% of all primary intracerebral hematomas. In this study, we evaluated eight patients with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage for their clinical presentation and neurological findings. Material and methods: Eight patients, who were admitted to our department with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage, were evaluated for their clinical presentation and present risk factor findings on neurological examination and prognosis. Cast alloys used in dentistry come into close and prolonged contact with the gingiva and the oral mucosa, and certain alloys have been claimed to cause inflammation of gingival and periodontal tissues. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of PAF antagonist BN52021 on systemic and renal oxidative stress in experimentally induced obstructive jaundice. A total of 30 Wistar-Albino type rats used in the study were divided into sham, control and study groups, each consisting of ten subjects. Purpose: The aim this study was to investigate the effects of different suture techniques on the healing of abdominal wall wound. Materials and Methods: 24 male Wistar albino rats were included in this study. The rats were divided into two groups. A 4 cm midline laparatomy was performed after ketamine HCl anesthesia. In Group I, the incision was sutured with 4/0 polypropylene interruptedly and in Group II, the wound was closed with 4/0 polypropylene continuously. Aims: Rates of certain histopathologic features were evaluated in hepatitis C and in hepatitis B materials and analyzed statistically in a Turkish population. Method: The presence of lymphoid aggregate, steatosis, ductal lesions, sinusoidal inflammation and portal iron deposition were investigated in 80 hepatitis C and 104 hepatitis B specimens and evaluated using the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. Pan Band T cell markers were used for lymphoid aggregate analysis. P53 and PCNA were applied for the possible impact of steatosis on cell biology. In this study, the STR system HumF13B polymorphism and forensic efficiency values were investigated in a population sample from the Çukurova region. The F13B phenotypes were analysed using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) following a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and were visualised by silver staining. Allele frequencies were calculated by the gene counting method. Forensic efficiency values were estimated using the obtained gene frequencies of F13B. In this population sample, a total of five alleles, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 of F13B, were observed.
