Tissue perfusion is determined by both blood vessel geometry and the rheological properties of blood. Blood is a non-Newtonian fluid, its viscosity being dependent on flow conditions. Blood and plasma viscosities, as well as the rheological properties of blood cells (e.g., deformability and aggregation of red blood cells), are influenced by disease processes and extreme physiological conditions. These rheological parameters may in turn affect the blood flow in vessels, and hence tissue perfusion. Respiratory quotient (RQ) was used to assess the effectiveness of exercise interventions in shifting substrate utilisation. The body's RQ can be estimated non-invasively from the ratio of CO_2 production to O_2 consumption. In the present study, we examined the effects of acute hypoxia on the substrate utilisation of the body and its non-invasive estimation from ventilatory and pulmonary gas exchange variables during exercise. Eight male subjects performed two progressively increasing work rate exercise tests (15 W/min) until the limit of tolerance: in one test they were breathing room air (normoxia) and in the other 12% O_2 (hypoxia). Hemopoietic stem cell transplantation is being carried out for rapidly increasing numbers of patients. Survival probabilities have increased progressively, and most patients return to productive lives. However, delayed complications do occur. Here, we review the incidence and spectrum of post-transplant malignancies, discuss risk factors and mechanisms, and assess the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.

The effects of fasting on humans have not been adequately investigated. Ramadan fasting is a great opportunity for scientific research due to its peculiar nature. With this in mind, we conducted research on the effects of Ramadan on stroke, which is one of the most common causes of death in adults. Patients hospitalized solely for ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage were evaluated retrospectively. The ratio of these cases to other patients hospitalized in the neurology department was determined. The in-hospital clinical course and mortality rates of the patients with stroke were evaluated. The protein p53 seems to be related to the suppression of cell proliferation. Positive tissues appear to have a higher proliferative activity than negative tissues. Mutation of the p53 tumour suppressor gene has been demonstrated in a large proportion of human head and neck tumours, although no formal evidence of functional aberration has been shown p53 may have importance during the early stage of malignancy. Nowadays, modern biopsy techniques such as fine and wide needles are used instead of invasive biopsy techniques for examining malign and benign lesions. This study examines whether wide needle biopsy (Tru-cut) possesses advantages as an alternative method to open biopsy. This study was performed on 40 patients with suspicious intra-jaw lesions. The hematopoietic stem cell transplant activity survey of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) represents a novel modern tool in health care management. Introduced in 1990, it captures annual numbers of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) by indication, donor type and stem cell source from each individual European transplant team. Supplemented by demographical data and economic factors, team density and transplant rates can be calculated and the impact of economics on HSCT rates can be assessed. Tetanus is a vaccine-preventable disease of global importance. When acquired it has a high mortality rate. Screenings of special subpopulations such as women of childbearing age provide important clues about tetanus vaccination coverage, and tools for mass protective measures, e.g, protective measures for neonatal tetanus. In addition to its reliability and sensitivity, the main advantage of a mass-screening tool should be its cost-effectiveness. Parkinson's disease is characterized by progressive degeneration of the dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). However, the mechanism underlying DA cell death remains unclear. While apoptotic cell death has been implicated in DA cell death in Parkinson's disease, autophagy - a regulated cellular process for degrading intracellular proteins and organelles under stress - in Parkinson's disease is not known. Here, we report evidence of autophagy in DA neurons of the SN in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) model of Parkinson's disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiological measurements of the foramen magnum (FM) and their relation to sex as well as to note variations in the shape of the FM. Cranial computerized tomographic images (CT) of 110 normal subjects (57 males - 53 females) between the ages of 18 and 80 years were examined in this study. We compared Apgar scores and umblical arterial and venous blood gas samples of infants following the application of general anesthesia or lumbar epidural anesthesia during cesarean section. Sixty-two pregnant women whose babies were to be delivered at term by cesarean section were recruited for this study and randomized to receive either general anesthesia (GA) (n = 31), or lumbar epidural anesthesia (EA) (n = 31). The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of enuresis, constipation and enuresis associated with constipation in school children aged 5-9 years living in Malatya Municipality, Turkey. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. All elementary schools in Malatya Municipality with kindergarten and preparatory classes took part in the study. All parents of the children aged 5-9 years enrolled in these schools were given a questionnaire. Completion of the questionnaire was voluntary. Nicotine Dependence In Medical Students And Physicians In The Lakes Region, Rezan Demi̇ralay

This study was carried out to evaluate the level of physical nicotine dependence in medical students and physicians working in the Lakes region, Turkey. The standardized Fagerström test of nicotine dependence questionnaire was given to 135 physicians and 61 medical students who smoked daily. The rate of daily smoking was 28.4% in medical students and 33.7% in physicians. Average Fagerström test for nicotine dependence scores were 3.98 ± 2.69 for medical students, 3.69 ± 3.05 for general practitioners, 3.06 ± 2.23 for research assistants and 3.34 ± 2.88 for specialist physicians. The Behaviour And Attitude Of Physicians In The Lakes Region Towards Smoking, Rezan Demi̇ralay

This study was carried out on 401 physicians who work in the Lakes region, Turkey, to assess their behaviour and attitude towards smoking. A questionnaire based on guidelines and standardised questions prepared by the World Health Organization was given to physicians. Of the physicians, 136 (33.9%) had never tried to smoke in their lives and 45 (11.2%) were former smokers. Of the 220 (54.9%) physicians who had smoked for at least 6 months in their lifetime, 46 (11.5%) were ex-smokers. Tea flavonoids, including (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) have been shown to have chemopreventive activity in cancer. Studies in animals and humans suggest that these dietary compounds have a very low oral bioavailability. However, the reason behind this limited bioavailability as well as the mechanisms underlying absorption is not clearly understood. The overall hypothesis of this dissertation project is that the human intestinal absorption of (-)-epicatechin (EC) and its gallate, (-)epicatechin- 3-gallate (ECG) is limited and regulated both by multiple transport mechanisms and metabolism. A mathematical model for a neural control system of ant locomotion was developed. Contrast-based detectors using excitation and inhibition were tuned to specific contrast orientations. A control system using multiple orientation contrast detectors was then developed and optimized for a model ant, which could move via a biased random walk. The system allowed sufficient control to guide the ant through various mazes.

Interstrand cross-links (ICLs) make up a unique class of DNA lesions in which both strands of the double helix are covalently joined, precluding strand opening during replication and transcription. The repair of DNA ICLs has become a focus of study since ICLs are recognized as the main cytotoxic lesion inflicted by an array of alkylating compounds used in cancer treatment. As is the case for double-strand breaks, a damage-free homologous copy is essential for the removal of ICLs in an error-free manner. However, recombination-independent mechanisms may exist to remove ICLs in an error-prone fashion. We have developed an in vivo …

The coordinated regulation of chemokine responsiveness plays a critical role in the development of humoral immunity. After antigen challenge and B cell activation, the emerging plasma cells (PCs) undergo CXCL12-induced chemotaxis to the bone marrow, where they produce Ab and persist. Here we show that PCs, but not B cells or T cells from lupus-prone NZM mice, are deficient in CXCL12-induced migration. PC unresponsiveness to CXCL12 results in a marked accumulation of PCs in the spleen of mice, and a concordant decrease in bone marrow PCs. Unlike normal mice, in NZM mice, a majority of the splenic PCs are long-lived. …

Signaling through G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediates numerous airway smooth muscle (ASM) functions including contraction, growth, and "synthetic" functions that orchestrate airway inflammation and promote remodeling of airway architecture. In this review we provide a comprehensive overview of the GPCRs that have been identified in ASM cells, and discuss the extent to which signaling via these GPCRs has been characterized and linked to distinct ASM functions. Nicotiana tabacum L. ‘Glurk’ plants were transformed with antiapoptotic animal genes [chicken Bcl-xl; nematode CED-9; chicken Bcl-xl(GA) a mutant of Bcl-xl; and a 3’ non-coding region of human Bcl-2, referred to as 161-1]. Our objectives were to determine whether plant transformation with anti-apoptotic genes ameliorates drought tolerance in tobacco plants by subjecting the plants to a dry-down period. The non-transformed Glurk and the transgenic Glurk harboring G115, which expresses β-glucuronidase, served as controls. Sox transcription factors play key regulatory roles throughout development, binding DNA through a consensus (A/T)(A/T)CAA(A/T)G sequence. Although many different Sox proteins bind to this se-quence, it has been observed that gene regulatory elements are commonly responsive to only a small subset of the entire family, implying that regulatory mechanisms exist to permit selective DNA bind-ing and/or transactivation by Sox family members. Swelling subsequent to hyposmotic conditions activates a process of volume regulation present in most cell types. This volume adjustment is accomplished by osmolyte translocation toward the extracellular space to reach a new osmotic equilibrium. Molecules involved in this homeostatic mechanism have been broadly classified into two categories: organic and inorganic osmolytes. Inorganic osmolytes comprise mainly the intracellular ions K+ and Cl–. Cell swelling–induced activation of separate K+ and Cl– channels has been described in most preparations. The cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2J2 arachidonic acid epoxygenase gene was down-regulated at a pre-translational level in human hepatoma-derived HepG2 cells incubated in a hypoxic environment; under these conditions, the expression of c-Jun and c-Fos mRNA and protein was increased. The 5′-upstream region of the CYP2J2 gene was isolated by amplification of a 2341 bp fragment and putative regulatory elements that resembled activator protein-1 (AP-1)-like sequences were identified. From transient transfection analysis, c-Jun was found to strongly activate a CYP2J2–luciferase reporter construct, but co-transfection with plasmids encoding c-Fos or c-Fos-related antigens, Fra-1 and -2, abrogated reporter activity. Nearly all human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are acquired mucosally, and the gut-associated lymphoid tissues are important sites for early virus replication. Thus, vaccine strategies designed to prime virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses that home to mucosal compartments may be particularly effective at preventing or containing HIV infection. The Salmonella type III secretion system has been shown to be an effective approach for stimulating mucosal CTL responses in mice. The present invention provides a method to detect the presence of a microorganism or agent in an animal. The method encompasses placement of devices at various locations where the animal resides so as to induce the animal to initiate contact with the device. As a result of this contact, the animal deposits various microorganisms and agents on the device. The device is then tested for the presence of the particular microorganism or agent of interest.
