Microalbuminuria is considered to be an early indicator of diabetic nephropathy. We have previously reported the establishment of A-HAlb/98 hybridoma secreting monoclonal antibody that specifically recognizes human serum albumin (HSA). In this report, an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using this antibody for the measurement of urinary albumin (UA) and UA was examined in 24 different samples. A-HAlb/98 was used as the capture antibody by immobilizing onto microtitre plates in ELISA format. In searching the Staphylococcus aureus genome, we previously identified sarT, a homolog of sarA, which encodes a repressor for alpha-hemolysin synthesis. Adjacent but transcribed divergently to sarT is sarU, which encodes a 247-residue polypeptide, almost twice the length of SarA. Sequence alignment disclosed that SarU, like SarS, which is another SarA homolog, could be envisioned as a molecule with two halves, with each half being homologous to SarA. SarU, as a member of the SarA family proteins, disclosed conservation of basic residues within the helix-turn-helix motif and within the beta hairpin loop, two putative DNA binding domains within this protein …

This is a cross-national qualitative study with the purpose of obtaining perspectives held by people with quadriplegia and leading figures in disability movements in the Netherlands and Australia on the issues of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (EPAS). A disability voice is not prominent in public debate on EPAS in Australia or the Netherlands, even though people with disabilities are often thought to be vulnerable in relation to EPAS policies. Disability perspectives are potentially valuable in illuminating issues in relation to euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, because issues of dependence, independence, and individual autonomy play important roles in relation to both EPAS …

In this study, quantification levels were investigated to define alterations in the expression of the FLI1 gene on acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), which is characterized by a reciprocal t(15,17) translocation of fusing the PML gene to the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RAR alpha) gene. The FLI1 gene plays an important role in several signal transduction pathways, and is involved in the normal regulation of myeloid hematopoiesis and leukomogenesis. Skeletal growth disturbances, estimation of fetal gestational age, developmental abnormality and detection of certain fetal congenital anomalies, and determination of population growth characteristics have been the objectives of different investigators' studies. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes epidemics in developing countries such as India, Burma, Indonesia, Chad and China, but it causes sporadic cases in developed countries such as the U.S.A., Canada and the U.K. Turkey represents a bridge between HEV endemic and non-endemic areas, and HEV may cause epidemics in Turkey. Suicide In The Province Of Eskişehir, Turkey: The Approach Of Forensic Medicine, Yasemi̇n Günay Balci, Emre Albek

In the present study, a retrospective evaluation of suicides in the province of Eskişehir in 1997-1999 is made. Investigation reports of the Central Prosecutor's Office were obtained and the demographic data of the victims as well as the judicial criteria for the classification as "suicide" were evaluated. There were 94 cases of suicide and 65 of them (69.1%) involved males. Age distribution showed a predominance in the age group of 15-34 years. Suicide in males over 55 years of age occurred more frequently than in females (p < 0.05). Causes of death in suicides included hanging in 68.0% of cases, firearm wounding in 16.0%, jumping from heights in 7.4%, drug intake in 5.3%, railway suicides in 2.2% and butane inhalation in 1.1%; 79.8% of suicides occurred in residences. In 93.6% of the cases, scene investigation reports and drawings were obtainable, while photographs of the scene or of the victim were present in 53.2% of cases. A forensic medicine specialist's inquest had been performed in all cases whilst a medico-legal autopsy had been carried out in only 29.8% of cases. Death certificates were issued following an inquest and scene investigation in 66 cases. Medico-legal autopsies were performed in 73.3% of the cases of firearm wounding, 25.0% of the cases of hanging and 6.7% of suicides committed by other means. In conclusion, we emphasize the importance of a medico-legal autopsy in all suicide cases.

We have modified a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedure for homocysteine assay using 7-fluoro-2, 1, 3-benzoxadiazole-4-sulfonamide (ABD-F) pre-column derivatization. In this study, the thiol compounds were liberated from plasma proteins by reduction with 2-mercaptoethanol (BME) and derivatized with a thiol-specific fluoregenic marker, ABD-F. The derivatives were separated by reversed-phase HPLC on a Hypersil C 18 column (4.6 x 150 mm; 5 µ) using isocratic elution with 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 6.0 containing 8% methanol and fluorescence detection. Infectious complications are major causes of morbidity and mortality following major hepatic resection. We investigated in rats the incidence and time course of bacterial translocation after partial hepatectomy during ischemia and reperfusion. Forty-eight male Wistar rats weighing 230 to 280 g were studied. Partial liver warm ischemia was performed for 15 min followed by reperfusion for 15 min. During a second 15 min of ischemia, 70% hepatectomy was performed. The animals were divided into six groups of eight animals each. In this study the non-peroxide antibacterial factors in Malaysian honey were isolated and identified. The phenolic components were extracted from two different local floral honeys and their effects on the growth of selected pathogens were examined. A solid-phase extraction procedure was applied for the first time to recover honey phenolics. Identification was carried out via high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography analysis. Antibacterial activity was determined via the disc-diffusion and broth dilution assays. The phenolic fractions of gelam and coconut honeys showed potent antibacterial activities. Both honeys contain gallic, caffeic, and benzoic acids. However, gelam honey contains additional phenolic …

Our purpose was to investigate whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) has a specific mucosal appearance. Eighty-eight (female / male: 53/35) patients included in the study underwent endoscopy to determine the macroscopic appearance of their gastric mucosa. Biopsies taken from the antrum, incisura angularis and corpus of each patient were stained with toluidine blue and examined for Hp under a light microscope. Thirty were Hp negative and 58 Hp positive. Thirty-six percent of the patients had normal mucosa, 21.59% had spotty erythema in the antrum, 31.81% had a mosaic pattern in the antrum and/or corpus and 10.23% had acute duodenal ulcer. We examined the effects of various concentrations of the bupivacaine commonly used for spinal anaesthesia on the reversibility of conduction block in isolated frog sciatic nerves measured by the extracellular recording technique. Seventy-two isolated nerves were divided into 3 groups (n = 24), each of which was bathed in a different bupivacaine solution in a range of concentrations (10, 20 or 30 mM for 20 min). Echinococcosis is an infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis. It manifests as cyst formations in various organs, affecting both humans and animals. The cysts may be unilocular (E. granulosus) or multilocular (E. multilocularis). Multilocular cysts have particular significance, for their macroscopic appearance is reminiscent of malignant tumors and their prognosis is poor. BACKGROUND: Several physiological adaptations occur in the respiratory muscles in rodent models of elastase-induced emphysema. Although the contractile properties of the diaphragm are altered in a way that suggests expression of slower isoforms of myosin heavy chain (MHC), it has been difficult to demonstrate a shift in MHCs in an animal model that corresponds to the shift toward slower MHCs seen in human emphysema.
