Antibiotic Efficacy And Interaction In Escherichia Coli During Varying Nutrient Conditions, Kristina K. Millar
Antibiotic Efficacy And Interaction In Escherichia Coli During Varying Nutrient Conditions, Kristina K. Millar
Scripps Senior Theses
Due to the recent rise in antibiotic resistant pathogens, and the difficulties surrounding the quest for new antibiotics, many researchers have started revisiting antibiotic interactions in hopes of finding new treatment options. The primary outcome of this project was to examine the efficacy of concomitant antibiotic use under varying nutrient conditions, to identify variations in antibiotic interactions. Antibiotic interactions were studied, utilizing E. coli as a model bacterial system, grown in four different media types. E. coli cultures were treated with streptomycin, tobramycin, erythromycin, and amikacin individually and in a pairwise fashion at varying doses. We found that at least …
Genetic Counseling Students’ Perceptions: Does Supervisory Training Affect Students’ Perceived Competence Of Their Supervisors?, Sara Malka Cohen
Genetic Counseling Students’ Perceptions: Does Supervisory Training Affect Students’ Perceived Competence Of Their Supervisors?, Sara Malka Cohen
Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)
Clinical supervision of genetic counseling students is one of the integral methods for teaching, training and ensuring competent entry-level genetic counselors. Because of the large impact a clinical supervisor plays in his/her student’s training, the genetic counselor needs to be effective in his/her role. However, a qualified genetic counselor is not guaranteed to be a competent clinical supervisor due to the different skill set required for both counseling and supervision. Therefore, supervisor training may be a good method for aiding genetic counselors in adapting to the skills needed for successful supervision. There is a strong positive correlation between supervision training …
The Hormonal Regulation Of The Claudin Genes In The Ovary, Sean Gadson, April Binder, Kenneth Korach, Katherine Hamilton
The Hormonal Regulation Of The Claudin Genes In The Ovary, Sean Gadson, April Binder, Kenneth Korach, Katherine Hamilton
All Master's Theses
The ovary is a dynamic organ that responds to many hormonal signals. When these hormonal signals are disrupted, ovarian dysfunction can occur. One such example is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS patients suffer from high levels of testosterone. Excess testosterone may misregulate genes in the ovary and disrupt ovarian function. The Claudin (Cldn) 3 and Cldn11 genes have been shown to be regulated by androgens in the testis, while studies in ovarian cancer cells suggests a coregulatory mechanism for the expressions of Cldn3 and Cldn4 in the ovary. The objective of this study was to characterize the hormonal …

Through a five year prior search of Cochrane, Medline and Pubmed this review of the literature examined studies regarding type II diabetes related genetic variances specific to non-ethnic and ethnic populations of otherwise …
Nrf2 Pathway And The Reduction Of Oxidative Stress, Stephanie Jacobs Uselman
Nrf2 Pathway And The Reduction Of Oxidative Stress, Stephanie Jacobs Uselman
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Oxidative stress has been linked to cellular damage initiating disease processes such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. The Nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2(Nrf2) pathway (Figure 1) aids in age-related cellular decline. The purpose of this study was to define the relationship between Protandim, its activation of the Nrf2 pathway, and decline in oxidative stress and cellular damage. The literature review included journal articles obtained from PubMed, Google scholar, and Cochrane review within the past 5-10 years, and contained both animal and human studies. The methods used in the animal studies included ANOVA, the standardized t-test, and the Neuman-Keuls post-test. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. The human study included healthy participants, both male and female, age 29-78 with or without a specific medical diagnosis. Statistical analysis was based on the standardized t-test with a value of p<0.05 considered statistically significant. Liu et al. (2009) conducted a study investigating Protandim’s ability to suppress cancer tumor formation. Tumor incidence declined by 33% and multiplicity of skin tumors by 57% with p = 0.003. Superoxide dismutase increased 35%, catalase 58%, and manganese superoxide dismutase 21%. In 2013, Reuland et al. conducted a study to determine if Protandim could activate the Nrf2 pathway and induce antioxidant enzymes, thereby protecting cardiomyocytes from apoptosis. Results indicated that treated cardiomyocytes showed increased levels of Nrf2 nuclear accumulation, activation of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, and protection against cell targeted oxidative stress (p<0.05). Quereshi et al. (2010) completed a study to delineate if Protandim decreased oxidative stress through the Nrf2 pathway. After six months of supplementation, TBARS decreased by 48% (p=.006), and plasma osteopontin decreased by 57% (p=.018). In 2005, Nelson et al. conducted a study to determine if Protandim decreased cellular damage. After 30 days of supplementation, TBARS declined by 40% (p =0.0001), at 120 days, TBARS declined by 40-54% (p =0.002), and superoxide dismutase and catalase increased by 30% and 54% respectively. The results from studies indicate that Protandim’s activation of the Nrf2 pathway increased endogenous antioxidant availability, resulting in decreased oxidative stress and age related cellular damage.
Pcsk9 Inhibitors: A Review Of The Efficacy, Safety And Current Literature Recommendations, Lacey L. Jandrin
Pcsk9 Inhibitors: A Review Of The Efficacy, Safety And Current Literature Recommendations, Lacey L. Jandrin
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed counties. It is estimated that 60 million Americans have LDL-C levels > 160 mg/dl. Only about 1/3 of these patients meet treated LDL cholesterol goals of < 70 mg/dl indicating a need for greater control. High dose statins have been the mainstay in treatment of dyslipidemia, however, up to 20% of patients are statin intolerant indicating a need for secondary treatment strategies. This lead to the development of monoclonal antibodies to proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors. PCSK9 inhibitors result in decreased destruction of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) which leads to an increase in the transport of LDL-C to its destruction effectively reducing LDL-C levels in the blood. The purpose of this study is to analyze the literature available on the efficacy and safety of new PCSK9 inhibitors. The results of this literature review indicated that PCSK9 inhibitors effectively lowered LDL-C by an average of approximately 50%. The evidence reviewed by this analysis indicate that 70% of patients treated with PCSK9 inhibitors met LDL-C goals. The findings also indicate that the side effects associated with this new class of medications are comparable to current side effects seen with traditional cholesterol lowering agents. The largest side effect seen in up to 10% of patients were injection site reactions and did not require discontinuation of the medication. The results of this analysis indicate that PCSK9 inhibitors may be of benefit in patients who are statin intolerant, do not meet LDL-C goals on traditional statin therapy or have familial hypercholesterolemia. Education in use of injectables, cost and insurance coverage and dosing schedule are likely to be areas of continued research and may affect use of this new class of cholesterol lowering agents.
Histological And Behavioral Consequences Of Repeated Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Mice, Amanda Nicholle Bolton Hall
Histological And Behavioral Consequences Of Repeated Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Mice, Amanda Nicholle Bolton Hall
Theses and Dissertations--Physiology
The majority of the estimated three million traumatic brain injuries that occur each year are classified as “mild” and do not require surgical intervention. However, debilitating symptoms such as difficulties focusing on tasks, anxiety, depression, and visual deficits can persist chronically after a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) even if an individual appears “fine”. These symptoms have been observed to worsen or be prolonged when an individual has suffered multiple mild TBIs. To test the hypothesis that increasing the amount of time between head injuries can reduce the histopathological and behavioral consequences of repeated mild TBI, a mouse model of …

Investigation Of Ischemia-Modified Albumin Levels And Some Atherosclerosis-Related Serum Parameters In Patients With Diabetic Foot, Sabahatti̇n Muhtaroğlu, Di̇dem Barlak Keti̇, Kürşad Ünlühi̇zarci
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: To investigate serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels, and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity in patients with diabetic foot. Materials and methods: Thirty patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), 30 patients with diabetic foot (29 and 27 of these patients had type 2 DM, respectively), and 30 healthy volunteers as the control group were included in the study. The patients with diabetic foot were divided into 2 groups, as those who had or had not undergone lower extremity amputation. Serum PON1 activity, ox-LDL, and IMA levels were measured. Results: Serum PON1 activity was lower (P < 0.05) and ox-LDL levels were higher (P < 0.05) in the diabetic foot group than in the control and diabetes groups. Albumin-adjusted IMA values were higher (P < 0.001) in the diabetic foot group compared to the diabetes group. The postamputation levels of IMA were decreased compared to the preamputation condition (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The low activity of PON1 and the high levels of ox-LDL and IMA may play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic foot. The use of these parameters in the follow-up of patients with DM may prevent the development of diabetic foot. In order to reach a definitive judgment, further studies with a larger number of subjects are necessary.

Materials and methods: Thirty successfully resuscitated cardiac arrest patients were included in this prospective clinical study. The initial cardiac arrest rhythm, duration of CPR, return of spontaneous circulation time, administered doses of adrenaline, base excess, blood sugar, and hemodynamic parameters were recorded. Patients with Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) scores of 1-3 were defined as Group I and patients with GOS scores …

Background/aim: Anthrax is a zoonotic infection caused by Bacillus anthracis. We aimed to retrospectively evaluate cutaneous anthrax cases that occurred during an outbreak in eastern Turkey (Hakkari-Yüksekova), where people mostly earn their living from animal husbandry. Materials and methods: Forty-six cutaneous anthrax patients that were admitted to the hospital during a very short duration of 3 months (June-August 2011) were evaluated. Results: Out of 46 patients, 27 (52%) were women and 19 (48%) were men. The mean age was 37 ± 13 years. The distribution of occupations was 1 butcher, 1 cook, 5 farmers, 27 housewives, 11 shepherds, and 1 …

Background/aim: This study determined the effects of cotinine concentrations in follicular fluid (FF) and seminal plasma (SP) on the pregnancy outcome of couples using assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs). Materials and methods: This study was conducted as a case-control study. A total of 217 couples were included in the study. Among these couples, there were nonsmokers (66 women and 40 men), passive smokers (106 women and 54 men), and active smokers (45 women and 123 men). Demographic and smoking data were collected by questionnaire at the onset of treatment. FF and SP samples were obtained from the couples on the day …

Background/aim: Venous stasis during pneumoperitoneum in laparoscopic surgery is closely related to fibrin synthesis and deposition. The etiologic factors underlying fibrinolysis or hypercoagulability are not clearly defined. This study aimed to determine the effects of pneumoperitoneum time and pressure on coagulation cascade and the fibrinolytic pathway. Materials and methods: After the pneumoperitoneum model was established in rats, PAI-1, tPA, TAFI, D-dimer, and fibrinogen activities were evaluated in different time periods under different pressures in groups including 6 rats. Group 1 did not undergo any procedure. Group 2 received 8 mmHg of pressure for 30 min, Group III 8 mmHg for …

Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the effects of early adverse life events and being raised by an ambivalent mother on rats. Materials and methods: The rats were separated into four groups: 1) the control group (n = 12), which was raised under standard care; 2) the early handling (EH) group, which was raised using an EH model (n = 16); 3) the early deprivation (ED) group, which was raised using an ED model (n = 13), and 4) the ambivalent mother (AM) group, which spent 3 h/day with a "fake mother" (n = 17). When they became adults, their …
