Np’S Perception Of Preparedness And Self-Efficacy Between Novice Nps That Participated In A Post Graduate Training Program And Those That Did Not, Tasha Bruner-Hill

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The role transition from a registered nurse (RN) to a nurse practitioner (NP) can be challenging and stressful as the RN moves from often expert status back to novice status as an NP. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to explore if role transition was easier for novice NPs that participated in a post-graduate training program, then for those that did not. Following IRB approval for the study, a self-report tool consisting of 18 questions was emailed to a national sample of NPs who graduated 2014-2020 and practiced at least one year but not more than five years …

College of Science and Health Full Text Publications

The Open Neuroscience Initiative is a free-to-use textbook

This project began as a means to overcoming the financial burden that face undergraduate neuroscience students when buying textbooks. By compiling and writing a completely free-to-access textbook that covers the foundations of a typical college introduction to neuroscience course, students would have one less obstacle to overcome in their educational career, allowing them to focus their valuable time and attention on learning rather than finances. To make this project a reality, I began with a humble tweet in May 2019 that managed to gain a tiny bit of traction among the neuroscience …

INTRODUCTION: Universities are increasingly considering tobacco-free campus policies to help promote a healthy learning and working environment. We assessed attitudes of students, faculty, and staff, before and after the implementation of a tobacco-free campus policy at a large, urban university. We also examined individual factors associated with these attitudes.

METHODS: An independent panel design method was used to assess students, faculty and staff about their tobacco product use, attitudes towards tobacco policies, and support for cigarette and e-cigarette bans 3 months before and 7 months after a university-wide policy change to ban tobacco and e-cigarettes on campus. Survey participants before …

Hpv Vaccine Discussions Between Medical Students And Standardized Patients, Eric S. Brian, Emily Noonan, Laura A. Weingartner

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

The vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) protectsindividuals from cancer by preventing HPV infection. This vaccination is recommended for people who are assigned male or female at birth. However, since these groups are often associated with different risks of HPV infection, there may be gaps in how effectively the vaccination is recommended to patients. We gathered data by viewing recordings of medical students taking histories from standardized patients. We recorded if and which vaccinations were discussed as the patients established primary care. We focused on discussions surrounding HPV vaccines and used discussions around influenza vaccines as a comparison. We recorded if …

Efficacy Of A Social Determinants Of Health Training Intervention, Stacy A. Henley, Emily J. Noonan, Laura A. Weingartner

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

BACKGROUND

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are circumstances, such as living and work conditions, that affect patient health outcomes and contribute to health inequalities. Understanding patients’ SDOH can help physicians recognize barriers to care. Therefore, it is important that medical students learn to gather information on SDOH from patients.

METHODS

Standardized patient (SP) encounters with rising third-year students were analyzed to determine if an educational intervention about SDOH increased the frequency SDOH were discussed with patients. SP encounters were randomly sampled from 2017 (pre-intervention, n1 = 37) and 2018 (post-intervention, n2 = 40) video recordings of students eliciting …

Comparing Medical Student Nonverbal Behavior With Cisgender And Transgender Standardized Patients, Meghan M. Schneider, Meghan M. Schneider, Emily J. Noonan, Laura A. Weingartner

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

BACKGROUND

It is essential for medical students to effectively communicate with patients of all gender identities. Nonverbal behaviors such as eye contact and nodding are key communication skills. Evaluating nonverbal behavior is one way to assess the quality of patient care, and examining providers’ behaviors while working with cisgender and transgender patients can identify potential biases linked to patient identity.

METHODS

To evaluate nonverbal behavior, we analyzed video-recorded training sessions with medical students interviewing standardized patients who identified as cisgender or transgender women. All students identified as cisgender men or cisgender women. Ten nonverbal behaviors were rated from 1-7 using …

Current Standards Of Postgraduate Surgical Education And Training In Pakistan: Time To Bridge The Gaps In Lieu Of National Necessity, Sabah Uddin Saqib, Abdul Hakeem Memon, Omair Saleem, Amir Hafeez Shariff

Section of General Surgery

The provision of good-quality surgical care is a salient feature of every public health system. Pakistan is ranked among low and middle-income countries where the burden of surgical disease is rapidly increasing, but the capacity of the health system has not expanded at the same pace to cater current needs. One of the key components is the dearth of trained surgical specialists and lack of easy access to surgical care. College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan is the main certifying institution for surgeons, while public and private teaching hospitals bear the burden of responsibility for surgical education and training. The …

Surgery is a dynamic specialty and surgical competencies are a combination of both technical and non-technical skills. After the inception of the art of surgery, surgical education and training has undergone incredible evolution. The first model of surgical training was introduced in the 19th century and is known as the 'apprenticeship model', followed by the famous 'Halstedian' model. However, a report by the Institute of Medicine challenged the teaching institutions to formulate alternative methods of surgical education to ensure patients' safety and to reduce the fear among patients of them being practised on. Teaching surgical skills outside the operating room …

Section of General Surgery

Mentorship in medicine aims at professional and personal development of trainees in the early stages of their careers. It is more popular in surgical subspecialties since transfer of technical skills is an integral part of surgical training, which makes it distinct compared to other specialties. Effective mentoring in surgery plays a crucial role in academic success, professional development, career guidance and personal growth of residents, and provides guidance and support to mentees to excel in their respective fields, and increases the likelihood of success by enhancing motivation with positive impact on burnout among residents. Efforts have been made by accreditation …

Covid-10, Healthcare Interior Design + Provider Experience - How Does Your Space Work For You?, Ruth E.P. Deibler

Graduate Research Posters

The lack of research on healthcare staff experience and interior design of the spaces they work in is evident. A focus on staff perspective is needed, particularly staff who navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. This research seeks to capture those stories to develop further research in order to improve staff experience. The initial phase of this mixed-methods approach is a survey. Hypothetically, by placing providers at the center of qualitative research related to healthcare interior design, we can better understand existing healthcare spaces. Ideally, we can develop additional evidence-based, human-centered solutions to transform interior environments in healthcare.
