Advanced Practice Provider Onboarding Support Model Comparison: Is There A Superior Choice?, Melissa Ricker, Cragin Greene, Anne Vail

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Health care practices and institutions are providing variable onboarding models to prepare physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) for transition into new practice settings. With the evolution of healthcare delivery and increased opportunities for PAs and NPs to specialize in advanced practice environments, there has been a growing demand for an evidenced-based strategy, structure, and appraisal of content within existing onboarding models. The aim of this paper is to compare two onboarding models for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs): postgraduate training programs and traditional institutional transition to practice programs. With expanding numbers of postgraduate training programs offered nationally and increasing …

If Gharib Hall Could Talk, Maryam Alizadeh, Dean Parmelee, Saeedreza Mehrpour Jan 2021

If Gharib Hall Could Talk, Maryam Alizadeh, Dean Parmelee, Saeedreza Mehrpour

Medical Education Faculty Publications

Not only did we have to convince faculty and students that "active and engaged" learning would make for better education-a major "culture" transition-we had to create the learning spaces that would support these changes. Hafferty, in confronting hidden curriculum, has suggested that medical school is a "learning space", which sends messages to students and teachers (1). In sum, we defined the "problem" as an "opportunity" to engage students, faculty, and leadership in a process to transform the learning culture to learner-centered and this included creating a teaching-learning space to fit.

Motivation For Participating In Continuous Professional Development Among Selected General Practitioners In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: An Exploratory Case Study, Low Kien Yong

Student Works (2020-2029)

Continues Professional Development (CPD) activities are life-long learning engagements for general practitioners. It can enhance their medical competencies across cognition, psychomotor and affection domains, hence upholding safety and quality of healthcare services. Literature reported that motivation drives learning among general practitioners. However, limited studies explored the motivation from an educational lens. This study explored motivation(s) from the Andragogy and Self-Determination Theory perspectives in promoting active learning among general practitioners. This study also explored their perceptions of the amended law enforcement in Malaysia that mandates CPD participation. Three private general practitioners in Kuala Lumpur consented to participate in this study. In-depth …

Genomic Education – Bench To Bedside: A Novel Approach To Teaching Genetic Diagnosis, J. Keith Williams, Michael M. Segal, Lynn K. Feldman Jan 2021

Genomic Education – Bench To Bedside: A Novel Approach To Teaching Genetic Diagnosis, J. Keith Williams, Michael M. Segal, Lynn K. Feldman

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Problem: Teaching genetic diagnosis is required in all medical schools and physician assistant programs. However, with thousands of relevant findings and thousands more rare diseases, lectures and narrative resources are inadequate for the task. Whatever information that is taught is easily forgotten and does not carry over into the clinic. Many rare disease patients suffer through “diagnostic odysseys” (3 to 30 years to correct diagnosis). Approach: We used a commercially available diagnostic decision support system (DDSS) that encompasses all Mendelian disorders with known genes, together with other conditions in their differential diagnosis, and a case-based educational approach to teach diagnostic …

A Multiple Goals Perspective On Burnout Disclosure And Support Among Attending Physicians, Alison N. Buckley

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Burnout is a common experience among physicians and has been identified as a precursor to substance abuse and suicide ideation. When not addressed, burnout can have many negative personal, relational and professional consequences. Research about the burnout experience is limited due to the taboo nature of the topic. The present study used a multiple goals theoretical perspective to examine how physicians disclose burnout in order to access social support. Attending physicians from various specialties (N = 30) participated in one-on-one interviews and were asked to discuss their burnout experience, conversational goals during burnout disclosure, catalysts and barriers for disclosure, and …
