Mites Of The Family Laelapidae In Venezuela (Acarina: Laelapidae), Deane P. Furman

This publication presents the results of an extensive survey of symbiotic laelapid mites of vertebrates from Venezuela. Over 40,000 vertebrates were examined from a wide variety of life zones and localities. The laelapid fauna represented includes 1 new genus, Hymenolaelpas, and 7 genera previously described: Laelaps, Mysolaelaps, Tur, Steptolaelaps, Neoparalaelaps, Gigantolaelaps, and Androlaelaps. The genera are represented by 51 species and subspecies, of which 8 are described as new. Previously unknown males and immatures of several species are described. Gigantolaelaps versteegi ( Oudemans ) is redescribed from type material; G. wolffsohni (Oudemans) is redescribed from Oudemans’ original material; G. peruviana …

New World Polyctenidae (Hemiptera), With Special Reference To Venezuelan Species, Norihiro Ueshima

There are seven species of the polyctenid genus Hesperoctenes which occur in Venezuela. Six of these species are reported in this paper. H. longiceps (Waterhouse) is redescribed. Data on distribution and hosts and a key to the 15 species of the genus Hesperoctenes are given.

Venezuelan Nycteribiid Batflies (Diptera: Nycteribiidae), Lindolpho R. Guimarães

Eleven species of Nycteribiidae, all belonging to the genus Basilia, are reported from Venezuela. Of these, two (tuttlei and typhlops) are described as new and four (anomala, dubia, juquiensis, and tiptoni) are recorded for the first time. B. anomala is the first species with three tergal plates to be found in South America. Synonymies, previous localities, and host records are given for all species, as well as new records and comments. Geographical distribution and host-parasite associations are discussed. Field parties of the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project obtained the material on which this paper is based.

A review is presented of 36 cases of nonparasitic cysts of the liver. These are uncommon and had been difficult to diagnose clinically. Diagnosis has usually been made by post-mortem examination and by surgery. Attention is focused on the merits of modern diagnostic methods to differentiate cystic from solid tumors of the liver. These methods include radioisotope scanning, ultrasonography, and abdominal arteriography.

Two hundred and eighty patients with primary gout diagnosed between the years 1959-64 at Henry Ford Hospital were studied to determine the frequency of myocardial infarction in the fourth, fifth and sixth decades. The retrospective data correlate with previously published reports of accelerated platelet turnover and our own observation of increased platelet surface activation in patients with gout. The results suggest an increased risk (or myocardial infarction before age 50 in patients with primary gout; this merits prospective study. The finding of increased platelet surface activation in patients with gout may provide an insight into the pathophysiology of the apparent …

Current Tests For Tubal Patency: Their Study And Comparison, Asghar Afsari, Robert J. Thompson

Two hundred patients have been reviewed in whom culdoscopy or laparoscopy was performed for infertility study. During these two procedures, methylene blue was injected through an endocervical cannula for detection of tubal patency under direct visualization. When compared with 89 patients tested by utero-tubal insufflation and hystero-salpingography, results indicated that direct visualization of the tubes and dye hydrotubation appears to be the most reliable method. HSG proved to be the second most reliable method with a failure rate of 19.2%. The least accurate procedure in this study was UTI with CO₂ gas, where the failure rate was 24.7%. The …

Intraperitoneal administration in rats of a single large injection of the potent nephrotogenic aminonucleoside,6-dimethylamino-9-(3'-amino-3' =deoxy-β-D-ribofuranosyl)-purine, resulted in striking reductions in kidney cortex mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, assayed on tyramine substrate The alterations in enzymatic activity correlated remarkably well with the onset and development of the massive proteinuria characteristic of the disease. The inhibitory effects were also produced in vitro, and Lineweaver-Burk reciprocal plots were clearly indicative of non-competitive inhibition. It is suggested that aminonucleoside inhibition of kidney mitochondrial MAO activity may be a biochemical lesion in the primary step of GBM collagen cross-link formation, whereby collagen fibrillogenesis is impaired …

Biopsy-Proven Amebic Colitis Treated With Metronidazole, Frederick R. Bode, Earl J. Van Volkinburg

Amebiasis was diagnosed in a Vietnam veteran and treated in a conventional manner with diodoquin and tetracycline. Symptoms persisted over the next three and one-half years despite repeated courses of diodoquin. Amebic colitis was confirmed by biopsy through a sigmoidoscope. The patient then received a ten-day course of metronidazole (Flagyl). Studies are cited proving this single agent is the drug of choice in the oral therapy of all clinical forms of amebiasis.

Effects Of Dietary Factors And Morphine Administration On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption And Dopamine Metabolism In Rats, Claudia Smithson

The effect of diet and dietary additives on voluntary alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats was studied. Alcohol intake measured weekly and reported as ml of a 10% solution ingested per 100 grams body weight. A four week pre-experimental period was designed to determine individual tendencies to drink and thus to eliminate the high and low drinkers from the study. No difference was found in alcohol intake with either starch or sugar as the carbohydrate source; however, there was a greater weight gain ( p < .025) in those animals consuming sugar-based diets. Rats on poor-quality diets containing minimal amounts of vitamins and minerals continued to gradually increase alcohol consumption during the study. This diet, supplemented with coffee, caused the greatest significant increase in alcohol intake and the lowest weight gains. Addition of coffee to the diets significantly increased alcohol consumption (p< .005) but decreased growth rate (p < .0005) . However, when the poor quality diets were supplemented with vitamins and minerals, alcohol consumption was reduced by about 50% (p < .005) and weight gain was significantly increased (p < .0005).

The daily intraperitoneal administration of morphine sulfate significantly decreased alcohol intake (p < .02) and the per cent of total fluid consumed as alcohol (p < .02) but did not effect water consumption.

This paper presents a revision of the family Boraginaceae for the state of Utah. Ninety-three species in seventeen genera are recognized. The treatment includes keys, synonymy, descriptions, and citations of representative specimens found in the various herbaria in the state of Utah. The new combination Lappula occidentalis (Wats.) Greene var. cupulata (Gray) Higgins is presented.
