The Effect Of Psyllium Hydrocolloid And Cholestyramine On Hepatic Bile Lipid Composition In Man, W. T. Beher, B. M. Schuman, M. A. Block, G. J. Lin, K. K. Casazza

The effects of a mucoid - psyllium hydrocolloid - and an anion exchange polymercholestryamine - on the total cholesterol, total phospholipid, total bile salt, cholate, chenodeoxycholate, and deoxycholate concentrations of hepatic bile were determined in six post-cholecystectomy patients. Bile was obtained by drainage through an indwelling T-tube, which was clamped except during bile collection. Psyllium hydrocolloid treatment (12 gm/day) for 6 to 29 days had little or no effect on the cholesterol or phospholipid concentration of hepatic bile, but increased the total bile salt pool by gradually increasing the concentration of deoxycholate. Purpura Arthralgia Weakness Mixed Cryoglobulinemia Syndrome Treated With Splenectomy: A Case Report, Carl R. Haeger

Weakness purpura mixed arthralgia cryoglobinemia (IgG - IgM) syndrome was first described by Meltzer in 1966. Such a case was recently reported after treatment with Cyclophosphamide and subsequent splenectomy for pancytopenia with beneficial effects on the cryocrit. The patient reported here underwent splenectomy without Cyclophosphamide and had subsequent amelioration of the clinical symptoms. Abnormal plasma cells found in the spleen presumably were responsible (at least in part) for the patient's symptomatology.

A 60-year-old woman developed high fever, jaundice, anemia with pancytopenia and hepatosplenomegaly. She deteriorated rapidly and died one month later, having shown no beneficial effect from high dose corticosteroids and splenectomy. An antemortem diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis of the Robb-Smith type was made and duly confirmed by autopsy study. This rare disorder of the reticuloendothelial system, heretofore designated "histiocytic medullary reticulosis," deserves recognition and inclusion among the histiocytic diseases and in the classification of the lymphomas. Its proper nosologic designation is suggested.

A miniaturized procedure using a modified microtiter plate is described for the isolation of cell wall deficient organisms. It is particularly useful when the volume of a liquid specimen is very small.

A kinesiological electromyographic study was completed to determine the relative changes in muscle activity as a person walks and stands with different degrees of knee flexion deformity. The ultimate aim was to establish criteria for appropriate preventive and corrective measures relating to knee flexion deformity.

Six different muscles were implanted with wire electrodes. The subjects performed a series of walking and standing experiments with the knee flexed at selected angles by a locking leg brace to simulate knee flexion deformity. Zoologists have discounted this belief as superstition until recently, when it was learned that at least two species of shrews - the European water shrew, Neomys fodiens, and the American short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda - produce a toxin in their sub-maxillary glands.

The adrenal physiology of the albino rat was studied through the measurement of adrenal ascorbic acid levels. A cyclic phenomenon was observed which follows the diel periodicity of the animal. Ascorbic acid values were found to be characteristically higher in males than in females. A similar difference was also seen in populations divided into young animals (body weight less than 175 grams) and old animals (body weight greater than 175 grams). The diurnal rhythm of adrenal ascorbic acid (DAR) displays an inverse relationship to the diurnal rhythm of circulating levels of plasma corticosteroids. Alloxan monohydrate, 175 mg/kg body weight was given subcutaneously to albino rats to determine the effect of the diabetic state on the DAR. A total of 200 female albino rats were divided into two study groups. Study Group I was composed of 150 animals divided into populations of 15, each including 3 controls. Seasonal changes within the tubular and interstitial areas of the testes in Sternotherus odoratus are investigated, histologically and histochemically. Forty specimens were collected in Illinois, Tennessee and Louisiana between May, 1969 and August, 1972.

Many of the histological and macroscopic observations made by Risley (1938) on the spermatogenic cycle of S. odoratus in Michigan are confirmed. Contrary to his findings, fluctuations in interstitial cell nuclear diameters are observed during spermatogenesis. Greatest diameters coincide with what Risley has considered " . . . period of most active breeding." Local burn therapy usually includes the application of medicated ointments and dressings in order to minimize and eradicate infection. As this approach to local therapy may present problems regarding application and removal techniques, it was the purpose of this study to formulate a topical dosage form that may be applied to denuded areas of the skin without inunction. Using the concept of topical films, a dosage form was formulated that is highly water soluble, flexible , and adherent to both denuded and intact areas of the skin.

Numerous investigators have noted that individuals vary widely in their response to the anticoagulant, heparin. Animal model3 have suggested that patients with depressed renal function would be expected to clear heparin from the blood at a slower rate than patients with normal renal function.

Utilizing the Activated Coagulation Time clotting test, a method was developed to determine the anticoagulant half-life of heparin. The study calculated the half-life of heparin in a group of individuals with normal renal function and a population of patients in chronic renal failure. Quantitative histologic measurements of haversian bone remodelling were made of mineralized rib cross sections in 13 healthy rhesus monkeys. With the aid of previous tetracycline labelling, coupled with the Villanueva Osteochrome stain, Frost's quantitative bone analysis revealed that: a) the mean haversian bone formation rate is 0.359 z 0.186 mm²/mm²/yr; b) the mean number of osteoid seams/mm² is 4.03 ± 1.64; c) the mean appositional rale is 1 33 ± 0 23 microns/day while the radial closure rate when all the labelled systems are corrected is 0.42 r 0.080 mm/year; d) the mean circumference of …

Forty-three species of fleas were collected in Venezuela by personnel of the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project. Currently there are fifty-two species of fleas known from Venezuela. Four new taxa are described: Hormopsylla cryptica, Ctenidiosomus perplexus, Adoratopsylla antiquorum rara and Adoratopsylla antiquorum recta. The females of Adoratopsylla antiquorum discreta Jordan and Rothschildopsylla noctilionis (Costa Lima) are described. The families Stephanocircidae (Cleopsylla, Craneopsylla, Plocopsylla, Sphinctopsylla) and Pygiopsyllidae (Ctenidiosomus) are reported from Venezuela for the first time. Two male specimens of the genus Orchopeas constitute the first record of this genus in South America and records of species of the …

Nine species of bat-mites representing six genera of the family Labidocarpidae are recorded from Venezuela. The genus Pseudoalabidocarpus is described as new and contains a single species, P. secus, new species, collected from Phyllostomus elongatus and P. discolor. Two other new species are described: Lawrenceocarpus phyllostomus, new species, collected from Phyllostomus elongatus and Micronycteris hirsuta; and Labidocarpus dossuarius, new species, collected from Molossus major. New distribution and host records from Venezuela include: Alabidocarpus furmani on Glossophaga longirostris, Carollia perspicillata, C. brevicauda, Vampyrops helleri, Anoura caudifera and Pteronotus parnellii; A. nicaraguae on Uroderma magnirostrum; A. jonesi on Vampyrops helleri; Parakosa tadarida …

Eight species of the tribe Amblyopinini are known from Venezuela. The descriptions of five species (Amblyopinus proximus, A. intermedius and A. metasternalis plus Amblyopinodes major and A. venezolanus) are given in this paper. Megamblyopinus seeversi Machado-Allison and Barrera is placed in the genus Amblyopinus and A. bolivari Barrera, Machado-Allison and Muñiz is reduced to a subspecies of A. schmidti Seevers. Data on hosts and distribution are given for the new species as well as A. emarginatus Seevers and A. waterhousei Fauvel.
