The Fecal Shedding Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Conventional And "Germ Free" Mice, Margaret Joyce Ramsay Sep 1966

The Fecal Shedding Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Conventional And "Germ Free" Mice, Margaret Joyce Ramsay

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A series of experiments involving Listeria monocytogenes was undertaken to study first the fecal shedding of Listeria by conventional mice challenged intraperitoneally with Listeria and second the fecal shedding and ability to survive of germ free mice with similar challenge. In addition, mites infesting Listeria infected mice were cultured for their possible contamination by Listeria.

Conventional mice were challenged intraperitoneally with a single near LD50 dose of Listeria. Fecal Listeria were detected by collecting specimens from each mouse daily for the first 4 days and every second day thereafter. The feces was held at 7°C for 14 …

A Growth Study On Phenylketonurics, Emma Johnson Aitken Jun 1966

A Growth Study On Phenylketonurics, Emma Johnson Aitken

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Data from forty-eight medical records of phenylketonuria children under treatment were investigated to determine if growth, as measured by stature, was normal; and to determine if the state of control or the age at beginning of treatment had an effect on growth. Mean intakes of phenylalanine, protein, and calories were obtained on the nutritional data only if the simultaneous serum phenylalanine was equal to or less than 6 milligrams per cent. These means were grouped according to the age of the children into 7 groups (0

The height at beginning of treatment and the last measured height was compared with …

Antibiotics And The Wasting Disease In Neonatally Thymectomized Rats, Douglas M. Grignon Sep 1965

Antibiotics And The Wasting Disease In Neonatally Thymectomized Rats, Douglas M. Grignon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The administration of the antibiotic, Chloramphenicol, to pregnant rats just prior to, and for four days after delivery, diminishes the incidence of the so-called "Wasting Disease" in neonatally thymectomized rats.

A total of 50 rats were divided into the following groups:

  1. Thymectomy only---nonmedicated 17 rats
  2. Thymectomy only---medicated 12 rats
  3. Thymectomy-adrenalectomy---nonmedicated 5 rats
  4. Thymectomy-adrenalectomy---medicated 8 rats
  5. Controls---nonmedicated 4 rats
  6. Controls---medicated 4 rats

Chloramphenicol was administered in the drinking water to the mothers of groups 2, 4 and 6 for about 2 days prior to delivery and 4 days after. On the day of birth or within three days after birth, the …

The Preparation Of Nursing Care Guides From A Study Of Nursing Problems In African Rural Hospitals, Edith L. Gillham Aug 1964

The Preparation Of Nursing Care Guides From A Study Of Nursing Problems In African Rural Hospitals, Edith L. Gillham

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to make nursing care guides which can be used by African students of nursing in making individualized nursing care plans. The nursing problems which were met in African rural hospitals served as a basis for the nursing care guides. Data for the study were obtained through questionnaires which were airmail to ten rural hospitals in Africa. Eight of the hospitals responded to the questionnaires.

The types of employees, the hospital facilities, and diseases of patients hospitalized during 1963 were studied. Special emphasis was placed upon the nursing problems found in the hospitals. These items were employed …

The Effect Of Infection With Polyoma Virus On The Protein, Rna, And Dna Of Mouse Embryo Cell Cultures, Lawrence E. Mcconnehey Aug 1962

The Effect Of Infection With Polyoma Virus On The Protein, Rna, And Dna Of Mouse Embryo Cell Cultures, Lawrence E. Mcconnehey

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In four separate experiments mouse embryo cell monolayers infected with polyoma virus and uninfected control mouse embryo cells were maintained in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium for periods of time ranging from 0 to 168 hours. The cell layers were removed from the glass by trypsinization. Samples of the cells were counted in a Coulter Counter and the remainder of the cells frozen after centrifugation, in a button. Later, the buttons were thawed and protein, RNA, and DNA analyses were performed on each sample. The micrograms per million cells of protein. RNA, and DNA were determined for each sample and plotted …

The Pathogenesis Of Periodontal Disease And Treatment Implications, Richard C. Oliver Aug 1962

The Pathogenesis Of Periodontal Disease And Treatment Implications, Richard C. Oliver

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Presently accepted concepts of the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease do not adequately explain the following consistent clinical observations: (1) equal local etiologic factors do not result in equal periodontal destruction in all patients; and, (2) equal therapy is not equally successful in all patients. The differences in patient response must be due to differences within the patient. By relating the broadened concept of disease, as described by Engel, to periodontal disease, the reasons for these individual patient differences become apparent. This concept consideres[sic] disease in relation to the patient's genie and developmental background, as well as the present …

Natural History Of Thelazia Californiensis Price, 1930 (Nematoda: Thelaziidae), A Mammalian Eye Worm, Warren E. Parmelee Sep 1958

Natural History Of Thelazia Californiensis Price, 1930 (Nematoda: Thelaziidae), A Mammalian Eye Worm, Warren E. Parmelee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Various factors—embryology, host associations, and seasonal changes In eye worn populations—tending to promote the propagation of T. califomlensls were studied.

The early embryology closely parallels that of other nematode species.

The mature embryos remain alive in saline at 35°C as long as 5 days. Dead embryos can be distinguished from living ones by virtue of the rapid staining by methylene blue by the former. Parturient female thelazias release embryos into saline, and embryos are found regularly in tear secretions of infected laboratory rabbits.

Ovic embryos possess an enveloping egg membrane containing chitin. On this account, this eye worm species is …

Natural And Experimental Infections Of Thelazia Californiensis Price (1930, Nematoda: Thelaziidae) With Descriptions Of The Adult And Larval Parasites, Howard S. Burnett Jun 1958

Natural And Experimental Infections Of Thelazia Californiensis Price (1930, Nematoda: Thelaziidae) With Descriptions Of The Adult And Larval Parasites, Howard S. Burnett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this work was to determine the extent and effects of infestation of the eye worm of mammals, Thelazia californiensis, and to elucidate through experimentation or observation the mode of transmission.

A survey of literature revealed that thelaziasie (infestation by Thelazia species) may cause serious pathological changes in the eye and its adnexa, sometimes resulting in blindness. It was found that reports of thelaziasis in the United States were (with two exceptions) of cases in California. It was further found that T. californiensis has been reported in a wider variety of host than has any of other …

Introduction

This study is an attempt to discover the mode of action and evaluate the effectivity of cyclodiathermy in the treatment of glaucoma, using the Muller electric tonometer in studies on the facility of outflow.

This series of cases represents a cross section of the advanced cases of glaucoma which were operated on by attending and resident staff at the White Memorial Hospital between January 1953, and December 1955. Eighty-nine operations were performed on eighty-three eyes of fifty-eight patients of whom, with but few exeptions [sic], had lost field in the poorer eye to less than five …
