Modification Of The Ruiz-Moreno Chikungunya Seir Model, Joseph Devlin
Modification Of The Ruiz-Moreno Chikungunya Seir Model, Joseph Devlin
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The Ruiez-Moreno CHIKV model predicts the outcome of the Chikungunya disease. Chikungunya, a disease similar to the Zika virus, is vector-borne with very little treatment for patients. This experiment looks to find ways to improve the model. The model will still need further improvement, as there is no model that can predict with full certainty. However, a method of modification has been made to expedite the process, the code has been rearranged for easy input and to minimize possibility of unwanted changes, and the control files for comparison have been created. The method to modify the model can be superimposed …
Epigenetic Silencing Of Socs3 Expression Contributes To Fibrosis In Crohn’S Disease, Emily T. Marshall, Chao Li, John K. Kuemmerle
Epigenetic Silencing Of Socs3 Expression Contributes To Fibrosis In Crohn’S Disease, Emily T. Marshall, Chao Li, John K. Kuemmerle
MD Student Summer Research Fellowship Program Posters
Identified risk polymorphisms affecting the Jak-STAT3 pathway in patients with Crohn’s disease could affect TGF-β1 and collagen I expression and in the pathway’s negative regulator, SOCS3. Genetic factors, however, account for only ~25% of disease. Epigenetic events also shape gene expression. Recent experiments showed that autocrine IL-6 production in mesenchymal cells, subepithelial myofibroblasts (SEMF) and muscle cells, of patients with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease causes sustained Jak-STAT3 activity, excess TGF-β1 and Collagen I production and fibrosis. SOCS3 paradoxically decreased in these cells. We now identify epigenetic mechanisms that silence SOCS3 expression in SEMF of patients with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease. In a …

Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
This program is a 10-week internship designed for undergraduates interested in the scientific field to engage in current research. Students have the option of requesting to work under three mentors, one of which they will be paired. Students will work in the lab with the principal investigator and other members of the lab. Along with working in the lab, students in the program will also attend bi-weekly talks/lectures from researchers, grad students, and professionals at TSRI as well as participating in two presentations and a final poster or oral presentation.

National Emergency Cardiovascular Care Education Models: Where Do We Go From Here?, Richard N. Bradley

The last decade could easily be called the "Renaissance Period" of CPR education. Self-learning, video-mediated instruction, virtual education and many other strategies have been employed, but what is on the horizon? The presenter will discuss challenges in defining the meaning of BLS and ACLS certification and issue a call for a national summit to define the minimum criteria for emergency cardiac care certification.
The Scientific Foundations Of The American Red Cross Cpr Training Standards, Richard N. Bradley
The Scientific Foundations Of The American Red Cross Cpr Training Standards, Richard N. Bradley
Richard N Bradley
The CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training and certification standards established by the ARC (American Red Cross) are based on a scientific review of the best available published literature. Minimal difference are present between the ARC and other national training organizations. These differences result from differing organizational opinions on the best way to implement standards from limited scientific evidence.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Rescue Breathing Is Superior To Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation For Children And Infants: Results Of A Systematic Review, Joseph W. Rossano, Richard N. Bradley
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Rescue Breathing Is Superior To Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation For Children And Infants: Results Of A Systematic Review, Joseph W. Rossano, Richard N. Bradley
Richard N Bradley
Introduction
Evidence supports teaching hands-only CPR for the initial treatment of cardiac arrest in adults. Unlike adults, however, children and infants with cardiac arrest are more likely to have non-cardiac causes.
Hypothesis: The objective of this project was to conduct a structured literature review to answer the question, “In children and infants with cardiac arrest treated in an out-of-hospital setting, does compression-only CPR, alone or with supplemental oxygen, compared to CPR with rescue breathing lead to improved outcomes?”
Results
Sixty-nine records were identified and screened. Fifty-four of these did not meet inclusion/exclusion criteria, leaving fifteen full-text articles that we assessed …
Existing Research Is Inadequate For The Development Of Guidelines For The Basic Lifesupport Management Of Airway Obstruction In Adults: Results Of A Systematic Review, Richard N. Bradley, Joseph W. Rossano, Siobán Kennedy
Existing Research Is Inadequate For The Development Of Guidelines For The Basic Lifesupport Management Of Airway Obstruction In Adults: Results Of A Systematic Review, Richard N. Bradley, Joseph W. Rossano, Siobán Kennedy
Richard N Bradley
Introduction
There has been considerable controversy and several changes in guidelines for the basic life support (BLS) management of choking since the introduction of the Heimlich procedure in 1974.
Hypothesis: The objective of this project was to conduct a structured literature review to answer the question, “For adults, either conscious or unconscious, with obstructed airway, does any specific resuscitation techniques compared to currently recommended techniques, lead to different outcomes?”
Results
We identified 475 records after duplicates were removed; we screened all of these and excluded 454. This left 22 full-text articles which we assessed for eligibility; we excluded 19 of …

The objectives of this presentation are:
(1) Recognize zoonotic infections of public health importance that are currently in the news
(2) Understand the clinical presentations of arbovirus and hantavirus
(3) Describe actions a physician should take when suspecting one of these infections

Dengue And Aedes Aegypti: A Public Health Problem Along The United States-Mexico Border (Lecture Number 1 - A Series Of Dengue Lectures), Frank Cortez Flores
Frank Cortez Flores
My primary public health interest is the reemerging arboviral infections (e.g., dengue) that are increasing in incidence, expanding into new geographic areas, affecting new populations, and are threatening to increase in the near future, especially following a natural disaster (e.g., hurricanes). The goal of the dengue lecture series is to promote the recognition of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever and improve the understanding of factors involved in prevention, surveillance and control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the principal mosquito vector of dengue virus. The purpose of these lectures is to accelerate learning and development of an effective dengue prevention and …
