The Influence Of Egg Shell Crack Types On Hatchability And Chick Quality, Mozhdeh Moosanezhad Khabisi, Ahmad Salahi, Seyed Naser Mousavi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Fertile eggs were obtained from a commercial flock of Ross broiler breeders (51 weeks old) and candled to determine the presence of hairline or star cracks. Eggs (5400 total) were assigned in equal numbers to 3 treatments (hairline-cracked, star-cracked, and normal eggs) and incubated for 21 days. Upon hatching, 10 chicks per treatment were euthanized, and organ weights were measured. Compared with normal eggs, the presence of egg shell cracks (regardless of type) resulted in higher egg weight loss at the time of transfer; a decrease in hatchability, hatch of fertile eggs, chick length, yolk-free body mass (P < 0.01), and percentage of hatchling breast and liver weight (P < 0.05); and an increase in the contamination rate of eggs (P < 0.01). Weight loss in hairline-cracked eggs was significantly higher than in star-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Percentage hatchability and body weight of chicks hatched from star-cracked eggs was higher than in chicks from hairline-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Crack type did not have a significant effect on chick length and body weight uniformity; however, the Pasgar score as a quality indicator was higher in chicks hatched from star-cracked eggs than those from hairline-cracked eggs (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments in terms of heart and small intestine weight. The contamination rate of hairline-cracked eggs was higher than that of star-cracked (P < 0.01). A higher incidence of embryonic mortality was observed during days 1-8 of incubation for shell-cracked eggs (P < 0.001). Total embryonic mortality in hairline-cracked, star-cracked, and normal eggs was 51.1%, 36.6%, and 13.3%, respectively. This study showed that egg shell cracks reduced incubation parameters and chick quality. The negative effects of hairline cracks were more pronounced than those of star cracks.

Comparative Hematological Variables Of Bengal Tigers (Panthera Tigris Tigris) Kept In Lahore Zoo And Lahore Wildlife Park, Pakistan, Sumera Sajjad, Umer Farooq, Husna Malik, Maryah Anwar, Ijaz Ahmad

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In Pakistan, a scant number of Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) are being kept at various zoos or in certain wildlife sanctuaries, and there is a dearth of literature regarding the effect of captivity on their physiological parameters. The present study was hence conducted to determine and compare the hematological alterations in tigers of Bengal origin (Panthera tigris tigris) kept in captivity at Lahore Zoo (LZ) (n = 4) and in the seminatural environment of Lahore Wildlife Park (LWP) (n = 6), Pakistan. The results reflect a significantly higher (P < 0.05) total leucocyte count and platelet count and a lower packed cell volume in animals kept at LWP as compared to those of animals kept at LZ. No other significant differences in hematology were noted for the 2 captive forms. Despite the limitation of sample size in the present study, it was concluded that captivity has a significant effect on various hematological parameters in Bengal tigers. These baseline data will lay a foundation in the therapeutic evaluation and physical monitoring of tigers kept in various forms of captivity not only in Pakistan, but also in other countries such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, as well.

Effects Of Zinc On Growth Performance And Biochemical Parameters Of Piglets, Kun-Kun Wang, Hua-Wei Cui, Jian-Yi Sun, Li-Chun Qian, Xiaoyan Weng

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of zinc on growth performance, activities of enzymes, and concentrations of hormones were investigated in this study. Crossbred (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) piglets (initial body weight: 26.66 ± 2.45 kg) were randomly assigned into 4 groups receiving a basal diet and were supplemented with 60, 300, 1000, or 3000 mg/kg of zinc (as ZnSO_4^.7H_2O). The results showed that supplementation of zinc at 3000 mg/kg increased (P < 0.05) the average daily feed intake, weight gain, gain/feed, and relative organ weight, and promoted the activities of alkaline phosphatase and Cu-Zn superoxide (P < 0.05) by 84.17% and 49.86%, respectively, when compared with the control group. It also led to higher hepatic metallothionein content and tissue zinc concentration (P < 0.05) than in the control group. Furthermore, the concentrations of insulin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the 3000 mg/kg group were increased (P < 0.05) by 55.19% and 26.53%, respectively, compared to the control group. The present study suggests that pharmacological dietary supplementation of zinc increased growth performance, activities of enzymes, tissue zinc concentrations, and plasma insulin and NPY concentrations. Key words: Zinc, growth performance, tissue zinc concentration, enzyme activity, hormone concentration, piglet
