Dartmouth Scholarship

Chemokines induce chemotaxis, cell migration, and inflammatory responses. We report the identification of an interleukin-8 (IL-8) homolog, termed vIL-8, encoded within the genome of Marek's disease virus (MDV). The 134-amino-acid vIL-8 shares closest homology to mammalian and avian IL-8, molecules representing the prototype CXC chemokine. The gene for vIL-8 consists of three exons which map to the BamHI-L fragment within the repeats flanking the unique long region of the MDV genome. A 0.7-kb transcript encoding vIL-8 was detected in an n-butyrate-treated, MDV-transformed T-lymphoblastoid cell line, MSB-1. This induction is essentially abolished by cycloheximide and herpesvirus DNA polymerase inhibitor phosphonoacetate, indicating …

Peripheral Blood Leukocyte Response And Macrophage Function During Eimeria Adenoeides Infection In Turkey Poults, Amanda D. Drake, Sarah E. Heuer, Timothy G. Kimball, Timothy O. Peters, H. David Chapman, Gisela F. Erf

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Intestinal coccidiosis, caused by various species of Eimeria, is an economically important disease of chickens and turkeys. The peripheral blood leukocyte response and macrophage functions during a coccidial infection in turkeys have not been defined. To examine these aspects of innate immunity during primary Eimeria infection in turkeys, 4-week-old poults were orally inoculated with either 50,000 E. adenoeides oocyst (24 infected poults) or water (24 control poults). To monitor the concentrations and proportions of white blood cells (WBC) throughout the course of infection, heparinized blood was collected from 12 infected and 12 control poults prior to inoculation (day 0), and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the induced antibody level of rainbow trout immunized by Yersinia ruckeri bacterin was determined using two serological techniques, namely, indirect fluorescent antibody (IFAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The induced humoral antibody levels were studied after intraperitonal injection of Yersinia ruckeri bacterin inoculates containing Freund's incomplete adjuvant or PBS in rainbow trout during the experimental period of 20 weeks. The control and experimental groups each contained 20 fish. The group which was immunized by the PBS containing bacterin inoculate received a booster injection. Experiments were carried out in 11-12°C water. Low antibodies titres were detected by ELISA …

Re-Thinking The Summer Drenching Program, Brown Besier Jan 2001

Re-Thinking The Summer Drenching Program, Brown Besier

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The summer drenching program has provided highly effective sheep worm control in Western Australia for many years - but recent research challenges its long term sustainability.

Trial results suggest that in large parts of the State, summer drenching is the main factor leading to the development of drench resistant worms. Alternative programs less likely to lead to drench resistance will require greater monitoring of worm burdens and panning pasture moves.

Serological Survey Of The Infection Of Parainfluenzavirus Type 3 In Cattle In Malatya, Aykut Özdarendeli̇, Mehmet Kandi̇l

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Cattle serum samples were examined for antibodies to parainfluenza type 3 (PI-3) virus using the hemaglutination-inhibition (HI) test. These sera were taken in autumn 1994 and spring 1995 from clinically healthy cattle in Malatya. Antibodies to PI-3 virus were detected in 897 out of 1000 cattle sera 89.7%. Reciprocal antibody titres to PI-3 virus in cattle ranged from 1:16 to 1:1024. It was determined that the proportion of seropositive sera in the cattle in the spring was higher than in the autumn.

Fish fed with DL-alanine (1.5% of diet) and betaine (1.5% of diet) supplemented diets had greater weight gains (35.36±1.81g and 38.47±3.02 g respectively) than those fed a control diet (28.32±0.31 g). It was found that the groups fed with attractant supplemented diets had better feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios than the control group. Whole body dry matter, fillet and whole body crude ash and crude protein ratios were similar in all the groups. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this research, the phenotypic parameters of fattening characteristics were determined and the of heritabilities of these traits were estimated in the Ile de France (IF) x Akkaraman (AK) (G_1) crossbreed male lambs. It was estimated that the widest genetic variation was daily live weight gain between the beginning of fattening and the 42nd and 56th day. It was concluded that the selection based on the daily live weight gain of the progenies to increase the meat yield in the IF X AK (G_1) sheep can be successful.

Bayesian Analysis Of Test Day Milk Yields In An Unbalanced Mixed Model Assuming Random Herd-Year-Month Effects, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat Jan 2001

Bayesian Analysis Of Test Day Milk Yields In An Unbalanced Mixed Model Assuming Random Herd-Year-Month Effects, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The main environmental effects in a mixed model are comparison or contemporary group effects or more precisely herd-year-month of calving subclass effects. The controversial subject of much discussion about the choice between treating contemporary group effects as fixed or as random has not still been settled in dairy cow evaluation. However, these effects are usually treated as fixed since nonrandom associations between sires and herds may lead to biased predictions if herd-year-month effects are accounted for as random. On the other hand, treating herd-year-month effects as random would increase the effective number of daughters or the information with which an …

In this study, our aim was to determine the distribution of specific immunoreactivities in some regions of the digestive tract of the pike-perch (Stizostedion lucioperca) against the antisera Gastrin, Serotonin (5 HT), and Cholecystokinin (CCK). The samples were taken from the stomach, intestine and pyloric caeca and the Avidin-Biotin-Immunoperoxidase method was applied. At the end of this application the immunoreactivities against all antisera were observed as intensively in the cells of the gland and less in the cells of Lamina epithelialis. The most intensive regions of immunoreactive cells were determined as the fundus, pylorus, anterior intestine and pyloric caeca. Immunoreactivity …
