The effect of three different utilization patterns upon the productivity and botanical composition of typical natural pasture was studied during a year of growth. The trial consisted of cutting the swards of three plots of a natural pasture in a humid zone in the south of Chile when they reached an average height of 20 cm, leaving only a height of 5 cm. Border Leicester x Merino ewes joined to Dorset Hom rams were run at 3 stocking rates (S.R.) and 2 systems of pasture management, viz Continuous grazing (C.G.) or a 4 sub-plot Deferred grazing system (D.G.) designed to meet the needs of the breeding ewe on subterranean clover based pastures at Bakers Hill (32°S l17°E), Western Australia for three years. Stocking rate affected ewe liveweight at joining and lambing, the growth of single lambs in the first year and tended to reduce the growth rate of twin lambs. The quality and forage yield of grass/legume associations is higher than in pure grass stands, with comparable nitrogen inputs. During a 180 day growing season, 10 - 15 t/ha of forage dry matter can be produced with less than 150 kg fertilizer nitrogen. Forage from mixed swards has a higher energy and protein content and a better balanced mineral composition. Both the high content of digestible organic matter and the legumes have a positive influence on the dry matter, energy and protein intake of the cows and the amount of milk these can produce therefrom. In Southland, New Zealand, a wide range of grazing systems are practised, from continuous set-stocking to year round rotational grazing. A problem is the apparent decline in contribution of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) to total sward production in older pastures. Cereal and brassica crops, which depleted soil N, were traditionally sown each year and used to ensure that about 20 % of any farm consisted of clover-dominant two and three year old pastures. Carran (pers. comm.) suggests that all-grass-farming has removed the N-deficit incentive for clover growth. Farmlet trials at the Gore Regional Station, DSIR, have shown that …

The use of artificially sown pastures is relatively recent in the tropics. Grasses and legumes have been evaluated for their value to livestock as well as the more traditional use of resting arable land after cropping. Using the criteria of ease of establishment, production under grazing and botanical stability, a number of species and mixtures were recommended for the humid areas of Uganda (Horrell and Tiley, 1970). White clover is the most important pasture legume in many EEC countries (white clover-ryegrass pasture system) and a good component of permanent and rotated polyphytic meadows in North Italy (irrigated Po Valley where the Ladino subspecies developed through self selection). The main characteristics of the species are N2 fixation and high nutritional value (quality). Therefore, white clover seed usage in the EEC is expected to still be important in the next decades. Acacia-dominated savannas iii southern Africa are ·maintained by disturbance. Wheri ihese ecosystems are managed as pastoral systems, the disturbance regime is altered, • arid the· successional sequence proceeds to broad-leafed woodland. We examined changes in woody species composition over a soil catena, and used sliccessional stages within an acacia-dominated community to develop a Markov model of the dynamics of the system. We used this model to simulate 2 management scenarios and to make predictions · of associated community changes over time.

The game industry on private land in South Africa has grown considerably in the last 30 years, resulting in a greatly increased biodiversity on private rangeland. However, animals are not domesticated and management is difficult. Leucaena leucocephala is a legume widely adapted to the tropics and subtropics and is currently recommended for sowing on fertile clay soils in the subconstal (100-1000 mm) rainfall areas of Queensland. It produces high quality forage that can be used as browse with native or sown grass pastures to improve live-weight gain of grazing beef cattle. At Banana in central Queensland a commercial grazing enterprise has been developed on 1450 ha of land cleared of brigalow scrub and cropped for 20-30 years before sowing to leucaena. To maintain long-term economic profitability we must ensure ecological sustainability. "Hillgrove" is a 65 000 ha specialist beef production (breeding, fattening, store production) property in the Charters Towers district of north Queensland. The environment is dominated by erratic (annual rainfall 127-1367 mm) and highly seasonal rainfall (75% during December-March). Dalrye is n 1473 ha farm 50 km south of Wagga in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales. It is approximately twice the average farm size for the area. The climate in this region is Mediterranean, with the average 600 mm rainfall being evenly spread throughout the year. The rainfall is reliable (cv. 20%) by Australian standards, There is no possibility of irrigation. Present enterprises are based on wool production from a Merino ewe flock, and dryland crops, including wheat, triticale, oats, lupins and canola. Legume-based pastures developed by the Tropical Pastures Program (TPP) of CIAT give spectacular increases in both stocking rates and animal live-weight gains on the savannas of Latin America, A team within the TPP is addressing the problems of their management for legume persistence and soil-plant-animal interactions, using as Its focus a grazing experiment on 2 oxisols of contrasting texture on the Colombian Llanos. The objective is to model the pastures to forecast the effect of management options on long-term persistence and nutrient cycling in grazed legume•grass associations in the Latin American savannas.

Tussac grass (Parodiocholoa flabellata) is a coastal tussock-fonning grass and is potentially the most valuable source of winter feed and shelter for livestock and as a wildlife habitat. Tussac grass (Parodiochloa flabellala) is a tall (up to 3 m), tussockforming, coastal grass reported by settlers in the early 1800s to be the best grazing for cattle and horses. Fire and uncontrolled grazing with sheep during the late 19th and early 20th centuries caused widespread damage to the coastal tussac fringe. Although some replanting by hand occurred, on most of the larger farms lack of protection to sensitive tussac stands has resulted in a decline in the total area from around 22 000 ha originally to an estimated 4000 ha in 1988. The potential seed yield (PSY) of a crop is represented by the total number of ovules present at anthesis in a unit area and is very high for nil forage species. However, seed yield or the agricultural realised seed potential (ARSP) is very low especially if compared with major grain crops (e.g., 15% vs 40% of PSY, respectively). The potential of extensification to reduce production within the BC has increased interest in the use of white clover (Trifolium repens) for milk production. In a long-term system study to determine the potential of white clover, 2 herds of 70 cows were managed on either grass swards plus 350 kg N/ha/annum or on grass-white clover swards which received no inorganic N. Continuous grazing and up to 3 conservation cuts a year had no adverse effects upon clover contents in the mixed swards. GRASSMAN, an agricultural decision-support model, has been modified to include sources, sinks and storages of greenhouse gases. The modified model was used to investigate the effects of changes in stocking rate and burning management on greenhouse gas emissions of southern Queensland grasslands. These grasslands are significant net emitters of greenhouse gases in their natural state, resulting in large differences between net and anthropogenic (man-made) emissions and hence, to different conclusions regarding emission reduction strategies. At moderate stocking rates, anthropogenic emissions could be reduced by about 20% with little loss of productivity. However, similar reductions in net emissions require larger management …

Seasonal variation in the structure of white clover (Trifolium repens) populations and the morphology of individual plants was studied in permanent pastures grazed by beef bulls. Three grazing regimes were applied: set stocking with 5.0 bulls/ha and rotational grazing with either, 5.0 or 7 .5 bulls/ha, Management had little effect on the structure of the plants or the stolon branching structure of the population. On average, 45% of the plants were of 2nd order; this value remained relatively constant throughout the year. An experiment was conducted in Sardinia to develop an appropriate rotational grazing management regime in spring for an ecotype of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudin). Three intermittent defoliation treatments were compared using sward surface height (10, 15 or 20 cm) to determine time of cutting. Forage dry matter yield, tiller population density, LAI, vertical distribution of plant tissues and other related characteristics were measured. Cutting when sward reached 10 cm resulted In significantly lower yields but a better canopy structure (denser sward, higher percentage of leaves in the bottom layers, higher leaf: sheath ratio) than the other treatments. Ryegrass-white clover (Lolium perenne L.- Trifolium repens L.) pasture was cut in continuous and .rotational patterns to provide herbage for 15, 20 and 25 ewes/ha. A comparison was made with grazed pasture. Dead matter content from rotational management decreased as stocking rate increased, but was high for high stocking rate continuous management when herbage requirements were high. Ryegrass decreased and clover content increased under continuous . management particularly as stocking rate increased.
