IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
As fossil fuel supplies decline and become cost prohibitive, biomass must be exploited as a renewable energy source, Energy yield from biomass tends to vary among species and different parts of the same plant, The purpose of this research was to determine change in percentage dry matter (DM), DM yield and quality (crude protein (CP), in vitro organic matter digestion (IVOMD)) of green leaves (GL), dead leaves (DL) and stems (S) of L79-1002 energycane (Saccharum spp. L.) harvested at 0.6 m increments from 0.6 to 4,2 m. As plant height at harvest increased from 0.6 to 4.2 m, GL quantity …
Seasonal Changes In Vitro Digestibility Of Leaf And Pseudostem And Its Implications For Diet Digestibility Of Perennial Ryegrass Continuously Stocked With Sheep, H Clark
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The dry matter digestibility (DMD%) of 3 categories of leaf (youngest expanding leaf, youngest fully expanded leaf, older leaves) and the pseudostem in 3 late heading diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars (S23, Melle and Mascot) was estimated on 6 occasions during a single 6-month. grazing season. The cultivars were continuously stocked to maintain a sward height of 4 cm. Information on the DMD% of the plant parts was combined with details of the proportions of leaf and pseudostem consumed by the sheep to obtain an estimate of diet digestibility. Differences between cultivars in the DMD% of plant …

Alfalfa Stem Architecture Effects On Forage Quality, K D. Kephart, A Boe, R Bortnem
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Forage quality in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) may be improved by selection for increased branching to dilute stem bases with less lignified branch tissue. This research was done to determine the effects of selection for branching on growth and forage quality of alfalfa stems. Divergent selection for the mass ratio of aidllary. to main stems (AMR) was done within 2 alfalfa cultivars and tested at 2 locations. High-AMR genotypes had about 16% greater AMR than low-AMR genotypes. Although differences in AMR existed, i11 vitro digestible dry matter (IVDDM) concentration of total stems and stem branches did not differ between …

Improving The Digestibility Of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, K J. Moore, K P. Vogel, A A. Hopkins, J F. Pedersen, L E. Moser
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The nutritional value of perennial warm-season grasses is limited primarily by digestible energy concentration. The relatively low digestibility of these grasses is due to their high concentration of fibre and its resistance to degradation in the rumen. The objective of this study was to evaluate quantitatively improvements in the digestibility of 5 experimental switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) populations in terms of a first-order digestion model in order to develop selection strategies for further improvement. The populations were developed by recurrent restricted phenotypic selection from a base population by l cycle of selection for low and 3 cycles for high …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Nutritive quality of many grass species used for forage in the Northern Great Plains of Canada and the United States is not well documented, especially at different maturity stages. This study compared agronomic and forage quality characteristics of eleven grasses common to Saskatchewan. Botanical separation and quality analysis was undertaken at three growth stages. Meadow Brome (Bromus riparius), Russian Wildrye (Psathyrostachys juceus) and Altai Wildrye (Elymus angustus) were shown to have high leaf to stem ratios which corresponded with high protein levels. Separations showed persistence of Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris arudinaceus), Creeping Foxtail …

The Effect Of Glyphosate On Dm Yield And Quality Of Forage Sorghum, T Kipnis, Sofia Kaller, G Krivat, Levana Dvash, D Ben-Ghedalia
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The possibility of improving the forage quality of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) by using herbicide was assessed in field trials. Glyphosate (Roundup) reduced cell wall content and increased the digestibility of the dry matter. When sprayed towards the end of vegetative growth, quality improvement could be achieved without reduction in yield. Glyphosate may enhance accumulation of sugars, however, the possibility that the herbicide improves forage quality by affecting cell wall structure and digestibility cannot be ruled out.

Anatomic And Chemical Traits, And In Vitro Digestibility Of Three Tropical Grasses, S Queiroz, Jose Alberto Gomide, Jose Maria
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Single linear correlation was established between in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and contents of chemical entities as well as proportion of different tissues. Top and bottom leaves were sampled from Jaraguagrass, setariagrass and dwarf elephantgrass. Among the chemical entities, lignin showed better correlation with IVDMD. The proportion of sclerenchyma in the samples of stem and leaf lamina from the top layer and the parenchymall cells in the leaf sheath showed highly significant correlations with the IVDMS NDF content correlated positively with percentage of sclerenchyma, lignified vascular tissues and parenchyma bundle sheath, but negatively with percentage mesophyll and epidermis tissues. …

Anatomy Of Forage Plant Parts In Relation To Digestion, P Rezvani Moghaddam, D Wilman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to contribute some quantitative information regarding the proportion of cell types and the thickness of cell walls in different plant parts of three major forage species, lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and maize (Zea mays L.). All plant parts examined contained a significant proportion of cell types with walls which appeared too thick to be completely degraded during the time which plant particles are likely to spend in the rumen; this applied particularly to lucerne stems and maize leaf blades.

Stover Traits As Indicators For Forage Aptitude In Argentine Hybrids Of Maize, L M. Bertoia, M B. Aulicino, R Burak
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The use of maize as forage in Argentina has increased in recent years. Nowadays, the seed sold in the country as forage maize belongs to selected grain hybrids. The development of wholly forage materials means a complete change in the architecture of the plant. Our aims were 1) To propose classification criteria of maize genotypes 2) To characterize maize hybrids used as forage on the Argentine market, based on yield and quality forage traits. Numerical techniques allowed the classification of the hybrids. Stover digestibility and stover soluble carbohydrates, indicative of forage quality traits, presented the greatest variability. These results would …
The Energetic Utilization Of Forages In Fresh And Dried Condition By Ruminants, W Jentsch
The Energetic Utilization Of Forages In Fresh And Dried Condition By Ruminants, W Jentsch
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The influence of dehydration of forages on digestibility and energy utilization was measured by indirect calorimetry in respiration chambers with adult wether sheep as a model for ruminants. Comparisons were carried out between fresh and carefully dried forages (experiment 1) and between fresh and not only carefully but also severely dried forages (experiment 2). Careful drying caused no change, but severe drying decreased energy and especially crude protein digestibility. There were no differences in utilization of metabolizable energy between fresh and carefully or severely dried forages.

Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Production of biosolids has been increasing consistently in the last few years. Land application of wastes is being regarded as an alternative means of disposal and as a source of inexpensive fertilizer material. Pastures are particularly attractive in this regard since the areas occupied are extensive and large amounts of fertilizer are required for adequate production. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various rates of biosolids on bahiagrass yield and quality. Forage samples were collected from each plot from April to December. Significant increases in dry matter production, crude protein content and in vitro digestibility …

Long-Term Effects Of Co2 Enrichment And Temperate Increase On Forage Quality In A Temperate Grass, J F. Soussana, J M. Besle, I Chabaux, P Loiseau, P C. De Faccio Carvalho
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Perennial ryegrass swards were grown during two years at two N fertilizer supplies in elevated (700 ppm) or ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration at outdoor temperature and at + 3°C in elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and temperature increase had only minor impacts on the digestibility and on the fiber composition of the cut material. On average, the water soluble carbohydrate concentration of the leaf laminae was doubled in elevated CO2, whereas a 3°C temperature increase reduced this concentration by 25 %.
Nutritive Value Of Guineagrass Cultivars In The Winter As Influenced By Nitrogen Fertilization, N.F G. Rethman, W.A J. Steenekamp
Nutritive Value Of Guineagrass Cultivars In The Winter As Influenced By Nitrogen Fertilization, N.F G. Rethman, W.A J. Steenekamp
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The monitoring of yield, structure and nutritive value of four Panicum maximum (Guineagrass) cultivars, utilized as standing hay in the winter, yielded valuable data on the relative importance of nitrogen fertilization and cultivar. While nitrogen had a strong influence on yield and crude protein content it was the differences between cultivars, with respect to soil adaptation and structure, which played a dominant role. It is recommended that future research place particular emphasis on the adaptation of cultivars and genotype differences in structure.

Nitrogen And Fiber Digestion In Sheep Fed Fresh-Frozen And Field-Dried High And Low Tannin Sericea Lespedeza, T H. Terrill, W R. Windham, C S. Hoveland, H E. Amos, B Kouakou, S Gelaye
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Field-drying reduces extractable condensed tannin (CT) of sericea lespedeza [Lespedeza cuneata (Dum-Cours) G. Don], but effects on specific bound and unbound forms of CT and the relationship to protein and fiber digestion in ruminants are unclear. Intake and digestibility of fresh-frozen and field-dried high- and low-tannin sericea were investigated in a feeding trial with sheep (Ovis spp.). Field-drying had no effect on crude protein (CP) and fiber content of sericea, but shifted CT from extractable to bound forms. Digestion coefficients for CP, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were lower for high-tannin sericea than the low-tannin …

Intake And Partial Digestibility Of Panicum Maximum (Cv. Gatton) At Three Stages Of Maturity During Summer, W.A. Van Niekerk, N F.G. Rethman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of stage of maturity on the intake and digestibility of P. maximum (cv. Gatton) during the active growing season. Low DM content at the young and medium growth stages (24.9 and 25.2%) did not hamper DOMI (48.8 and 44.1 g/kg W0.75/d) respectively. The N concentration of the three stages were well within the limit required for optimal rumen microbial production (1.8 - 2.0%). The high NDF value of the adult stage (59.5%) resulted in a significantly lower IVDOM value (62.3%) but the IVDOM values of all stages were on the …

Intake, Digestibility And Rate Of Passage Of Grass In Grazing By Light Breed Horses On Different Pastures, Masahito Kawai, N. Yabu, T. Asa, K. Deguchi, S. Matsuoka
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In a previous study, grazing light breed horses could ingest CP and DE requirements for maintenance without supplements. However, their grazing behaviour, such as biting and chewing efficiency, which related to the passage rate of forage in the digestive tract and fibre digestibility, was affected by the pasture conditions (Kawai et al., 2004). In this study, the DM intake, digestibility and mean retention time (MRT) of grass in light breed horses were determined and compared in spring, summer and autumn on an improved pasture.

Study On Re-Growth And Nutritional Potentials Of Eleusine Indica L In Chitwan, Nepal, P. R. Regmi, Naba R. Devkota, M. Sapkota, M. P. Sharma
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The efforts to use exotic fodder species to solve the problem of green roughage scarcity in Nepal, have had only limited success because the species are not persistent. Use of local forage species, such as Eleusine indica, which is widely adapted and tolerant of repeated cutting (Lowry et al., 1992), could be possible solution to the problem. The objective of this study was to understand the re-growth potential of E. indica with respect to nitrogen fertiliser application and cutting management and to determine its feeding value in the dry season.
