Leucaena leucocephala (L.) is a perennial schrub native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, considered by investigators as a valuable forage legume because of its capacity for high production of digestible forage with a high protein content and tolerance to drought in semiarid regions with annual rainfall less than 1,000 mm (Skerman, 1977). The soil fertility of the semiarid region in southern Puerto Rico is adequate, but rainfall distribution is limiting for forage production and nutritive value. We studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the histological structure of these plants with regard to stages of maturity, and their kinetic degradation in the rumen.

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is a nonconsumptive instrumental method for fast evaluation of the chemical composition, associated quality attributes, and physiological properties of forage plants. Norris et al. (1976) reported that NIRS (scanning monochromator instrument) could predict chemical composition, dry matter digestibility, dry matter intake, and digestible energy intake of grass and legume forages fed to sheep. The nutrition of grazing animals is difficult to assess because of the difficulty in determining the amount and quality of the ingested forage. Although many techniques have been proposed for sampling the grazed forage, none offer quantitative estimates of diet quality and intake for individual animals in large numbers. Smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) often produces over 70 % of its annual growth during spring. Summer growth and forage quality are poor. Mefluidide suppresses seedstalk production and improves forage quality of many cool-season grasses (Sheaffer and Marten, 1986). INTRODUCTION Several herbaceous species have shown promise as feedstocks for energy production. The University of Florida/Gas Research Institute co-funded program has tested herbaceous species since 1981. Tall grasses such as corn (Zea mays L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.], napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.), and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) are among the most efficient plants in converting solar energy to biomass (Schank, 1987). Calliandra calothyrsus outyielded leucaena in cutting experiments at 2 sites in northern Australia and I in Indonesia. Drying significantly depressed the voluntary intake and digestibility of leaf, possibly due to the presence of tannin. Calliandra has the potential as a supplement for the low quality grass common to the tropics both ln grazing and cut-and-carry systems.

Twenty-three Desmanthus virgatus accessions, established on a mildly alkaline clay soil (Typic Rendoll Mollisol), were repeatedly harvested to 10 cm stubble over a 2-year period whenever regrowths reached the early-pod stage of maturity to determine forage yield, leaf/stem proportions, forage quality and stand persistence. Differences were observed in seasonal growth distribution and annual forage yield of accessions. Collections from Venezeula and Mexico were among the most productive (8-11 t dry matter/ha/year) and from the Dominican Republic, the least productive (<6 t/ha/year) accessions. Most accessions perissted well under the lenient garvesting regime imposed. The proportion of leaf in dry forage ranged from 34 to 43% with average leaf crude protein (CP) content in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of 19.2% and 83.4%, respectively. The average stem CP and IVOMD were 7.4% and 48.9%, respectively, and were not affected by accessions. Leaf samples of all Desmanthus accessions contained high levels of tannins (26-31 g tannic acid equivalent s/kg DM). However, unlike fibre fractions, leaf IVOMD was only weakly correlated with leaf tannin content (r-0.38).

Evaluation of warm-season forage legumes for the south-eastern USA has been confined almost entirely to herbaceous plants, and woody plants have been largely overlooked. The objective of this study was to evaluate Albizia julibrissin as a woody forage legume. Dry matter yield of leaves was obtained from small plots harvested at 6-week intervals. Individual plants in a separate experiment were harvested every 4, 6, 8, lO and 12 weeks to determine yield response to harvest frequency, Leaf material was also fed to sheep for 3" weeks in a digestibility trial. The establishment, early production and quality of 4 tropical grasses was compared when established by direct-drilling into uncultivated, herbicide-kllled pasture or when sown into a fully cultivated, wellprepared seedbed. Direct-drilling resulted in significantly better establishment and early production than drilling into a prepared seedbed at the first cut, but not at subsequent cuts. Forage quality in terms of both crude protein and dry matter digestibility was high in all treatments, with no difference between sowing techniques and only small differences between species. Results are discussed in relation to farming practice.

Three oesophageal fistulated Hereford steers (average live weight 304 kg) were supplemented throughout a trial at 0, 0.7 or 1.4% of live weight, with a mixture of 90% ground maize and 10% sunflower expeller. Adaptation and sampling periods were 7 and 4 days respectively. Steers were allocated randomly to 4 Agropyron•dominated pastures of 1800, 2000, 8200 and 8900 kg OM/ha and leaf percentage of 5.8, 28.9, 23.2 and 14.0, respectively. Fistula samples were taken once daily, air dried at 60°C and analysed. Supplementation significantly (P<0.05) affected DM digestibility, which was 51.3, 54.7 and 57.2 for 0, 0.7 and 1.4% levels, respectively. Nitrogen and cell wall content differences were not detected. It appears that supplemented steers preferred pasture components with the highest digestibility.

An investigation was made into the seasonal changes in the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of leaf blade (LB) and stem (ST) of individual tillers of napiergrass (Pennisetum purpuretum) grown at the high-altitude site (HA) and low-altitude site (LA) in Miyazaki prefecture, south-western Japan. Within a single sampling date, the variation in the IVDMD with tillers was small both for LB and ST. Negative logarithmic relationships held between the LB percentage and tiller dry weight and between the IVDMD and dry weight of LB and ST. Studies on breeding and evaluating switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) for improved animal performance have been conducted for the last 18 years. !ti vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) has been increased 3 8 g/kg after 3 cycles of selection; demonstrating· that IVDMD of switchgrass can be improved using recurrent, phenotypjc selection. Digestibility of plant tillers collected at panicle emergence was an excellent predictor of IVDMD of progeny in pastures or swards during the growing season. In the Falkland Islands, short dense grassland communities ("greens") in valley-bottoms, and in coastal areas often associated with dense populations of seabirds, are selectively grazed by livestock and wild geese within the extensive grazing systems. Annual and seasonal herbage productivity, botanical composition, digestibility and utilisation, of greens were experimentally assessed at 6 sites on Bast Falkland. Herbage productivity, digestibility and utilisation were higher than reported for the dominant Cortaderia communities and compared favourably with Improved pastures. Castrated sheep on maintenance were fed in 2 consecutive years for 4 weeks with fresh summer-sowri rape (Brassica napus) forage. In spite of the energetic value at flowering stage (both by ill vitro or in vivo method) being lower than at the vegetative stage, it appeared to be quite good in comparison with the energetic value of grasses or legumes at flowering stage. We did not observe any difference linked with seed glucosinolates content.

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) was cultivated in pure stand, in association with white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and in various complex grass-legume mixtures. Forage yield and quality were always higher in associations with white clover than in tall fescue pure stands. However, under dry conditions, the balance between the two components was difficult to maintain. In more complex mixtures cocksfoot and tall fescue tended to become dominant and to produce a forage of lower quality. In mixtures of long duration, we replaced meadow fescue by tall fescue. An experimental alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) population whose in vitro and in vivo digestibilities are significantly higher than controls was offered to dairy cows in order to investigate its efficiency for· feeding high yielding dairy cattle. Three trials were conducted on first or second cut. Alfalfa was given ad lib. and as fresh forage. The improved digestibility was confirmed. The experimental type was ingested more by cows despite a lower dry matter content and allowed higher milk production. This result shows a real genetic variability for energetic value in alfalfa.

Annual grass pasture sprayed with glyphosate (180 g a.i./ha) at heading retained higher concentrations of water-soluble carbohydrates anci nitrogen than control pasture during senescence. Consequently, the. i11, vitro digestibility of the sprayed pasture was also higher than that of the control pasture. Merino wethers (18 months old) grazing the sprayed pasture consumed more senescent herbage and gained weight ( 40 g/ head/day) until 60 days after anthesis, whereas those grazing control pastures only maintained their Jive weight. However, in both treatments pasture feeding value declined with time and as a consequence improved aniinal performance was not maintained indefinitely.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench) and corn are the most popular summer forages in south-west Japan. In this experiment, the digestibilities of sorghum silage were determined by adult sheep and by heifers. The digestibilities of all proximate components by heifers were higher than by sheep, Non-structural carbohydrates were almost completely digested by sheep, in contrast to heifers which excreted a portion of the grain undigested. Neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin digestibilities for heifers were higher than those for sheep.
