Vertical and temporal trends in herbage yield and quality were assessed in a study sown in 1989 near Elora, Ontario. In a replicated field trial with 0.1 ha paddocks, Hereford heifers rotationally grazed 2 swards to each of 2 residual grazing heights, namely, SO and 100 mm, with a requisite 200-2S0 mm entry height. Profiles in yield and in in vitro organic mailer digestibility (IVOMD) were developed from 6, 1500 cm2 quadrats per paddock, which were subjected to vertically stratified clipping, using sheep shears with a vacuum attachment. The characteristics of pastures receiving different systems of grazing management during September-May were examined over 3 years from September 1989. Three farmlets (each 10 0.8-ha areas) represented (i) rotational grazing every 30 days (September-May) (RG), (ii) fast rotations during spring (September-November) (SFR) and (iii) fast rotations during spring, summer and autumn (September­May) (SSFR). Pastures were predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trlfolium repens L.) grazed by dairy cows. Three grazing treatments were allocated at random within e11ch of five 2.6 ha paddocks of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) pasture. The treatments involved variation i'n the timing and degree of control of ryegrass reproductive growlh in two successive pasture growth seasons (1990-91 and 1991- 92). Weaned 5-month-old lambs grazed 2 series of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) plots containing patches of mixed perennial ryegrass and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) varying in either a) the size of patches or b) the distance between patches. Both series embraced the same range of percentages (1-25) of ryegrass-clover patches in each plot. Diet composition was estimated from the pattern of naturAI alkanes in faeces collected between days 6 to 15 after allocation of the lambs to the treatments. The grazing habit of 6 Japanese Black and 6 Holstein steers was compared on semi-natural pasture and improved perennial ryegrass­white clover (Lolium perenne-Trifolium repens pasture in Japan. Japanese Black steers spent less time eating than Holstein steers on improved pasture. The ratio of walking while eating to total walking distance was lower for Japanese Blacks than for Holsteins, On the semi-natural pasture, Japanese Blacks .spent more time grazing than Holsteins and Japanese Blacks walked faster than Holsteins. On semi­natural pasture, Japanese Blacks picked upper leaves always walking forward.

Perennial ryegrass-white clover (Lolium perenne-Trlfollium repens) swards of 3 clover cultivars were studied at a lowland (30 m) and upland (340 m) site in mid Wales over 3 years (1989-91). Lamb production from small-leaved Aberystwyth S 184 at 1021 kg/ha was 25% and 1191, more than from small-leaved Ac3351 and medium-leaved Grasslands Huia respectively. The relative lamb output from Huia was poorer at the upland location. Individual plant morphology of 3 white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars was studied during 1990 and 1991. Seasonal shifts were demonstrated by all cultivars towards a higher proportion of less complex plants from winter to mid summer. Over the latter half of the year the population tended lo return towards its original distribution. Seasonal fluctuations in stolon dry weight/plant and root number/plant were also identified, with the small-leaved Ac3351 maintaining a greater stolon OW/plant than Aberystwyth S184 and Grasslands Huia during 1990. Experiments were conducted in controlled conditions to examine the influences of phytochrome on assimilate partitioning between stolons and branches and to determine the effects on plant moq>hogcncsis in white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Far-red (FR) irradiated plants partitioned more 14C-assimilates to petioles of both the main stolon and branches and less to the nodulated COOis than did control plants. Results clearly demonstrated that FR-irradiated plants developed longer petioles and long internodes. The relationship between rooting and branching in stolons of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) was investigated in a field experiment, Half of a group of stolons was allowed to develop roots naturally, while for the other half root establishment was prevented by severing young roots before they made contact with the soil. Prevention of root establishment did not affect the numbers of branches which developed on nodes produced during the experiment, and it stimulated of branching on nodes which were already present. Fewer than 10% of while clover (Trifolium repens L.) axillary buds form established branches in grazed swards. In order to understand the mechanisms controlling his large loss of growth potential we have charted the potential fates a bud may meet. Each step in this flow chart offers the possibility for a loss of branching potential. We consider the factors that may be important in determining the fates of buds and highlight in particular the heavy losses of viable buds at a young age and propose that different factors may control branch initiation and branch establishment.

Using a greenhouse screening technique, 200 plant introduction Jines of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and red clover (T. pratense L.) germplasm were evaluated for resistance to cylindrocladium root rot incited by Cyl/11drocladium crotalariae (Loos) Bell & Sobers. In general, white clover germplasm had much higher levels of resistance than red clover. Over 60% of white clover introductions had 30% or greater resistance to cylindrocladium root rot, with 21 % of the lines possessing more than 40% resistant plants. Nodal root development of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) swards was monitored by harvesting marked nodes from late autumn to spring and by taking tiller plugs over 15 months. At a hill country site Grasslands Huia and a large-leaved French eultivar, Crau, had greater nodal root development, in terms of root length, than a small­leaved hill country ecotype. Three plants from each of 2 white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars, Grasslands Kopu and a breeding line selected from germplasm of Syrian origin, were grown in large pots of soil and physiological characteristics measured during a continuous drying phase of 18-37 days. By the end of the experiment, leaf water potential was -2.5 MPa, gravimetric soil water content was 13% (considerably lower than -1.5 MPa), and leaf relative water content was 60%. Problems with persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in extensive pastures of the high rainfall zone in eastern Australia necessitate the use of a wider range of perennial legumes. A range of species have been evaluated in nurseries and in regional on-farm trials on the northern Tablelands of New South Wales. Caucasian clover and I.oms spp. have proven most successful so far. Growth, nitrogen fixation and animal production of pastures based on the white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars Grasslands Tabora or Grasslands Huia, and of unamended pastures containing the "resident" clover ecotype, were compared In a self-contained systems experiment on moderate to steep, low-fertility hill country. Put-and­take stocking of hoggets was used to assess animal production, with stocking rate determined by a feed budget model. A programme to breed white clover (Trifolium repens L.) for increased persistence, yield and winter growth in the Australian environment is discussed. A collection of Australian ecotypes ls being used as the population base, Two projects are discussed: selection within the population of ecotypes and hybridisation of the Australian cv. Irrigation with the winter-active cv. Tamar. Plants from the ecotype population with superior yield and stolon density were identified, Controlled pollination among these selected plants produced half-sib families and their performance in 3 contrasting environments is discussed.

However, it was not until the early 1920s that broad • agronomic groups were recognised, and not until the early 1930s that selections for improved agronomic performance were made within major ecotypes. The effectiveness of various strategies of selection for yield was tested using high performing white clover (Trifolium repens L.) lines derived from crosses between elite Grasslands Huia genotypes and elite genotypes from introduced germpiasm. There appeared to be no clear advantage of selecting genotypes, at the same intensity of selection, in the top 12.5% of families compared with the top 50% of families, There was a weak trend towards higher yielding progeny with increasing selection intensity. Nine white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars, among them 2 bred in Rio Grande do Sul, were evaluated in association with annuai ryegrass and pensacola bahiagrass. In a plot experiment, during 4 years, 17 harvests were cut to determine lhe dry matter (DM) yield of the mixture components. The annual ryegrass produced in· the first year 1634 kg/ha OM and in the second year, by natural reseeding, only 120 kg/ha. G39 white clover (Trifolium repens L.) is a cultivar of similar leaf size to Grasslands Huia, but with characteristically greater stolon numbers per unit area of pasture, It was bred for sheep-grazing systems from clover ecolypes collected and evaluated in northern New Zealand. Twelve parent plants tolerant of stem nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) and leaf diseases, with better productivity than Huia, were selected. Duration of autumn grazing may affect the long-term balance of grass and legume in a sward. Effects of early and late autumn closing dates were studied on productivity and morphology of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) and white clover (Trifolium repens) in replicated grazed swards. Early-closed paddocks continued to accumulate herbage during autumn, resulting in greater winter senescence than late-closed paddocks. Nodding thistle (Carduus nutans L.) is an important weed species in New Zealand pastures. The available information on interactions between this species and forage grasses and legumes is summarised and discussed. Nodding thistle inhibits pasture productivity, and allclopathy is probably Important at inhibiting pasture at the later stages of its life cycle. Although, nodding thistle is most susceptible to inhibition by forage species early in its life cycle, a minimum pasture cover may be required for seedlings to establish. Seedling recruitment from buried seed was measured in hill country after the resident vegetation was suppressed or killed using herbicide, and either Yatsyn ryegrass, hill ryegrass or a low fertility grass mix was oversown. Unsown plots serves as a control. The total number of seedlings emerging per m2 was similar for all treatments but differences between treatments occurred in the species composition of seedling populations. Nitrogen fertiliser responses, on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) / white clover (Trifolium repens) dominant pastures, are compared between sub-tropical South Africa and temperate Australia. The data highlight the similarity in inflection point of the response curve, while emphasising the influence of high residual soil N at lower N application rates. The propensity of communities to oscillate between extremes in terms of N fertiliser use on intensive pasture, or the ‘Pendulum Paradigm’ is discussed.
