Seed Yield Potential Of White Clover: Characteristics, Components And Compromise, P.T P. Clifford, I J. Baird

Nd relationship between leaf size and any of the measured variables was found for 63 agronomically superior white clover (Trifolium repens L.) plants of relatively diverse morphological and physiological characteristics, Predominantly crown-flowering plants gave more than double the seed yield of stolon-lip 'flowerers. High seed yields were also associated with delays in peak flowering, harvest date and increased harvest dry matter. Similar associations were evident for inflorescence density. Increased dry matter accumulation was associated with increases in both floret numbers and seeds/ inflorescence.

Two medium- (Hollandicum) nnd 3 large-leaved white clover (Trifolium repens.v L.) cultivar types (Ladino) were assessed for seed yield and components during 1988-1991, at Lodi (Po Valley). Dry matter yield wns also evaluated. The analysis of components showed significant (P=0.05) differences among the tesled cul ti vars. The large­lenved varieties Espana and Regal had the highest number of ripe heads/m2 and number of florets/head. The medium-leaved varieties Merwi RvP and Olwen showed good values for seed set only. A field experiment was conducted lo clarify the factors responsible, for poor seed set in 4 white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars. Although the mean number of ovules per floret was 5.18-5.29, lhe average number of seeds per floret was found to be only 1.23-1.82. A' stain-clearing technique was used to examine the cytoplasmic state of the embryo sac in intact, unfertilised, mature ovules and it was found that 28;33% of ovules per carpel were sterile. The study was conducted in the south of Brazil at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Enterprise, BMBRAPA. A winter-cultivated pasture stocked for 14 years with different stocking rates ended with different soil phosphorus (P) levels. To evaluate additional pho·sphate fertiliser response on this area, a pot experiment in the glasshouse was carried out. Severe symptoms (e.g., reddening, yellowing and necrosis) pointed to Mg deficiency as the main cause of poor white clover (Trifolium repens) growth on Hapludult soil in subtropical Guangdong Province, China. A field study was conducted lo measure clover response to Mg fertiliser and interactions with lime. Soil at Lechang Model Cattle Farm was highly acid (pH •)=4.3; Al saturation=85%) and low in­ exchangeable Mg (0.06 Cme./100 g). The potential of extensification to reduce production within the BC has increased interest in the use of white clover (Trifolium repens) for milk production. In a long-term system study to determine the potential of white clover, 2 herds of 70 cows were managed on either grass swards plus 350 kg N/ha/annum or on grass-white clover swards which received no inorganic N. Continuous grazing and up to 3 conservation cuts a year had no adverse effects upon clover contents in the mixed swards. The performance of lambs at 2 stocking rates, on either ryegrass­white clover (Lolium perenne- Trifolium repens) pasture or on a mixed herb ley, were compared under a system which precluded use of pesticides (including drenches) and highly soluble fertilisers. Farm operations, pasture composition and pre- and post-grazing association with herbage mass were monitored from May 1990 to November 1991 on 16 pairs of dairy farms. Each pair included one farm with a history of bloat despite routine use of chemical preventatives (bloat-prone) and one farm which did not routinely use chemicals to prevent bloat rarely observed bloat (bloat-free). The incidence of bloat during spring was low in both years. Morphological and ontogenetic responses of temperate pasture species 10 P deficiency with the potential 10 affect the plant's persistence and productivity were examined. Plants were grown in pols in glasshouses. Two grass species, Lolium multiflorum and Phlalaris aquatica, were compared and 2 cullivars of Trifolium repens, Grasslands Huia and Grasslands Tahora, were compared under P-deficient and P-sufficient conditions. ShooVrool ratio and the number of tillers per plant were unaffected by P deficiency in P. aquatica but decreased in L. multiflorum. White clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars grown in the USA are susceptible to many pathogens, pests and environmental stresses which have been shown to affect persistence adversely. The strategy used in our breeding programme is to first develop white clover populations resistant to individual pathogens and pests, and then incorporate this resistance into multiple-pest-resistant populations. Germplasms with resistance to peanut stunt virus (PSV), alfalfa mosaic virus (AMY), and clover yellow vein virus (CYVV), and with drought tolerance have been released. White clover (Trifolium repens L.), a key legume in New Zealand pastures, is parasitised by Heterodera trifolii, the clover cyst nematode. Resistance breeding is the most feasible control, and screening of 1st generation crosses has made considerable progress. Progeny of parents selected for resistance had only 39% cysts/g root dry weight of susceptible lines, and all resistant lines were lower when ranked. These resistant selections also had less fewer cysts per plant, heavier root dry weights and higher shoot growth scores. Plots of endophyte-infected and endophyte-free perennial ryegrass (Lollum perenne) cv. Ellett and white clover (Trifolium repens) cv, Grasslands Pitau were established in autumn 1990 by direct drilling into pastures previously sprayed with glyphosate herbicide. Plots were rotationally grazed by dairy cows. Insect pests were sampled by soil coring and extraction, and plant pathogenic nematodes by root staining and examination. Pastures were upgraded by sowing perennial grasses and subterranean clover (Trifolium subterranum) and applying fertiliser to paddocks on S farms in the wool sheep region of south-western Victoria. Upgraded pastures were stocked at higher rates to ensure utilisation of feed grown. In the third year after sowing, wool production was increased by 56% (35 v. SS kg/ha), and ewe live weights by 4% (49.4 v. 51.4 kg) from upgraded pastures compared with untreated pastures. Live-weight gain of angora-type year-old wethcr goats in the spring and summer of 2 years was compared with the total legume and chicory content of 9 different grass, legume, chicory ( Cichorium intybus) mixtures. These pastures were grown in a cool moist temperate climate on fertile silt loam soil. The goats were held on a self• contained rotationally grazed system on each pasture type, leaving a post-grazing residual height of 10 cm. Escaped plants of white clover which could not be identified by variety were collected and were grown in pots filled with a perlite contained nutrient solution in a growlh chamber. On 16 of the collecled plants, the change of the nitrogenase activity by treatments with or without nitrogen (20 ppm N, NaNO3) was measured by gas chromatogrnphy and the variation of peroxidase isozyme was analysed by means of slab acrylamide gel electrophoresis. This paper quantifies the processes of acquisition, allocation and retranslocation of phosphorus (P) within a white clover (Trifolium repens L.) population in a mixed grass-clover pasture during a regrowth period in early winter (13 May-8 July 1991). The work described is part of a broader study examining seasonal variation in these processes. The data allows an analysis of the changing P economy of plants and of whole populations. This study was undertaken to examine the relative severity of defoliation of young branches (those comprising <4 nodes) and parent stolons of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in rotationally grazed pastures stocked al either 2.5, 5.0 or 7.5 bulls/ha. On 7 occasions over a year, the defoliation of expanded leaves of parenl and branch stolons was assessed using tagged stolons. Petiole length of leaves ,vas measured before grazing. Leaves of young branch stolons (43% of the total number of leaves defoliated) were less severely defoliated than leaves of parent stolons (64%). Variation in the salt tolerance of 10 commercial cultivars of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) was evaluated in greenhouse and field· experiments over a range of NaCl concentrations. Cultivars differed significantly in terms of yield, shoot ion concentrations and parameters of growth such as leaf expansion and petiole elongation rates but not in the root concentrations of Cl or Na. During sporulation, Bacillus thuringiensis var. berliner 1715 produces insecticidal proteins (6-endotoxins) that are lethal specifically to Lepidopternn insects. Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated T-DNA transfer has been used to introduce a cry/A(b) li-endotoxin gene (the 812 gene) from this B. thuringiensis strain into a genotype of white clover (WR8). White clover (Trifolium repens cv. Grasslands Huia) was grown in competition with one of 10 established grass species or else grown alone. Plants were grown at either 350 or 700 ppm CO2, at 28/23°C and 700 µmol/m1/sec photon flux density. Plant growth and extractable ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (rubisCO) were measured. Grass growth responded less to CO2 than clover. Large natural turves from a ryegrass-white clover (Lolium pernne, trifolium repens) pasture were exposed to increasing day/nighl temperatures at 350 and 700 µVI CO2 over a 7•month period. Growth rate al the highest temperature (22/16°C day/night) was IS% higher at the elevated CO2 level; at lower temperatures the response to CO2 was reduced or even negative (-6% at 10/4°C). The growth rate of ryegrass was much lower at elevated CO2 while that of white clover and other grasses was increased. Digestibility (DMD) and crude protein (CP) percentage in leaf and stem of 4 cultivars each of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) grown at 3 day/night temperatures (12f7, 18/ 13, 28/23°C) and 2 CO2 concentrations (35 0 or 700 ppm) was estimated using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (N[RS). Differences between cultivars in DMD and CP were small and non-significant. Higher temperatures reduced DMD andCP in both species. DMD was unaffected by CO2 concentration in either species. A gene encoding the sulphur-rich pea seed storage protein pea albumin I (PAI), transcriptionally fused to the CaMV 35S promoter has been introduced into Nicotiana Iabacum and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. PA I mRNA expression has been confirmed in transgenic tobacco and white clover plants. However, PAI protein accumulation, as assessed by ELISA using an anti-PAI monoclonal antibody, is either low or the antibody does not have the required avidity or titre. Seasonal variation in the structure of white clover (Trifolium repens) populations and the morphology of individual plants was studied in permanent pastures grazed by beef bulls. Three grazing regimes were applied: set stocking with 5.0 bulls/ha and rotational grazing with either, 5.0 or 7 .5 bulls/ha, Management had little effect on the structure of the plants or the stolon branching structure of the population. Genes encoding the white clover mosaic virus (WClMV) coat protein . have been introduced into white clover (Trifolimn repens L.) using Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated T-DNA transfer. Integration of the coat protein gene in regenerated callus has been confirmed hy Southern blotting of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification products generated using specific oligonucleotide primers. A polyclonal antibody, raised against purified WCIMV coal protein, recognised a polypeptide of c. 25 kDa after SOS-PAGE and Western blotting. Allozyme marker loci Gpi-3,4 and Pgm-3,4 were used to monitor establishment of plants of the white clover (Trifolium repens L., cv. Grasslands Huia) oversown into 3 steep, north-facing hill country pastures. Comparisons of genotype frequencies in samples of the unimproved (resident) populations, the oversown populations 18 months after oversowing and Huia, provided information about changes in the genetic composition of the white clover populations after oversowing. In each case, oversowing brought about significant changes in allele frequencies but the estimated proportions of plants of cuhivar Huia were variable at 24.2%, 92.4% and 100%, indicating that establishment rates can vary not …

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) was cultivated in pure stand, in association with white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and in various complex grass-legume mixtures. Forage yield and quality were always higher in associations with white clover than in tall fescue pure stands. However, under dry conditions, the balance between the two components was difficult to maintain. In more complex mixtures cocksfoot and tall fescue tended to become dominant and to produce a forage of lower quality. In mixtures of long duration, we replaced meadow fescue by tall fescue.
