Nitrogen fertiliser responses, on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) / white clover (Trifolium repens) dominant pastures, are compared between sub-tropical South Africa and temperate Australia. The data highlight the similarity in inflection point of the response curve, while emphasising the influence of high residual soil N at lower N application rates. The propensity of communities to oscillate between extremes in terms of N fertiliser use on intensive pasture, or the ‘Pendulum Paradigm’ is discussed. During the seasons 1992/93, 1993/94, 1994/95, the productive pattern of seven cultivars of Lolium perenne: Nui, Ellett, Santa Elvira, Solo, Embassy, Super Nui, Marathon and five Lolium multiflorum: Tetrone, Montblanc, Concord, Aberoscar, Abercomo, was evaluated in a dryland area of Southern Chile. The average season at yield reached by the evaluated cultivars was statistically similar (P< 0.05). However, Ellett, Solo and Marathon, showed a higher persistence and Tetrone and Montblanc presented a plant structure which might allow a greater complementation with Trifolium pratense.

Nine grass-legume mixtures were evaluated during their first year. A factorial experiment was carried out using a complete block design. Herbage on offer and residual herbage were estimated allowing calculation of net herbage production, herbage accumulation rate and grazing efficiency. The mixture of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.) with a net herbage production of 22 407 kg dry matter (DM) per ha outyielded white clover (Trifolium repens L.) mixtures. Substitution of alfalfa by white clover in the mixtures resulted in reduction of herbage accumulation rate by 19 kg DM ha-1 day-1 . …

Animal production on pasture systems provided with either fertiliser or biological nitrogen was compared. A grazing experiment was sown at AgResearch Gore (46°07’ S; 168°54’ E) in October, 1989. Four ryegrass/white clover paddocks were compared to four ryegrass paddocks, with the latter receiving 270 kg nitrogen/ha/year. Each paddock of 0.5 ha was subdivided for rotational grazing at 20 ewes/ ha. In comparison to the ryegrass pastures, mixed pastures produced 22% more herbage and were subsequently 22% higher stocked, lamb liveweight gains were 12% higher during lactation and 42% higher after weaning resulting in earlier sale at higher carcass weights. The objective of this study is to generate transgenic ryegrass plants with a down-regulation of two major pollen allergenic proteins Lol p I and Lol p II. Antisense vectors for Lol p I and Lol p II cDNAs driven by the pollen-specific promoter Zm13 have been constructed. Corresponding transgenic plants have been recovered by particle inflow gun-mediated microprojectile bombardment of embryogenic suspension cells from perennial and Italian ryegrass using chimeric Act1-hph gene as a selectable marker. A field experiment studying the impact of the ryegrass endophyte (Acremonium lolii), was carried out at two locations in Galicia (Northwest Spain): Mabegondo on the Atlantic coast and Puebla de Brollón in the interior. Of 56 half-sib families of Galician perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) studied, 28 held endophyte (E+) and the other 28 not (E-). All these families were established in trial plots in 1992. Significant differences between E- and E+ families were obtained, and E+ families had a higher (P < 0.05) first cut, spring and total yield than E- families at Puebla de Brollón (dry location) in the third year after planting. The infection of perennial ryegrass with some strains of A. lolii seems to benefit the host in stressful conditions. In some areas of Galicia, climatic conditions are often stressful for perennial ryegrass and the chances of E+ plants being favored by either natural or artificial selection seems high.

A model is presented that analyses the potential effect of vertebrate grazing on the partitioning of grasses. Its conclusions are: 1) When grazing is sufficiently frequent and severe, grasses can increase their net increase in biomass by partitioning growth to reserves. 2) Partitioning growth to reserves greatly reduces leaf growth between defoliations. After repeated clipping, dryland browntop (Agrostis castellana) and red fescue (Festuca rubra) allocated a smaller proportion of growth between defoliations to leaves than ryegrass (Lolium perenne) or rough meadow-grass (Poa trivialis). Browntop and fescue achieved less leaf growth than ryegrass …

Defoliation events on labelled white clover (Trifolium repens) growing points or ryegrass (Lolium perenne) tillers were measured during grazing tests by sheep with swards consisting of mixed ryegrass-clover (MIX) or alternate strips of clover and ryegrass (STRIP). Sward surface height was maintained at 6.4 cm by lawnmower cuts in order to obtain a similar surface height for both species. On average, during 13 grazing tests in STRIP and 11 in MIX swards, clover was the more defoliated species : 23.3% of the growing points in STRIP and 26.5% in MIX swards were defoliated compared to 16.2% …

The objective of this study was to evaluate Al and H+ tolerance of nine ryegrass (Lolium perenne and L. multiflorum) cultivars by growing plants in a mineral solution (pH 4.8 and 6.0 and 0-200 (M Al). Results showed that Yatsyn-1, with a relative root length of 91 was the cultivar least affected by acidity (H+), and Concord ( RRLpH = 58) was the cultivar with the highest H+ sensitivity. In connection with Al-tolerance, Yatsyn-1 and Concord, were the most tolerant cultivars with 88 and 87 RRLAl, respectively whereas Nui and Marathon, were the most sensitive ones, reaching only …

A divergent selection for lamina length was done from natural populations of perennial ryegrass. Tested in a multi-site experiment in France, the short-leaved perennial ryegrass was more productive under simulated grazing and less productive under infrequent cutting than the long-leaved perennial ryegrass. Matching cultivars to their management is possible by selecting for morphogenetic traits. However, our results suggest the range of adaptation to different managements of perennial ryegrass cultivars could be extended by increasing their phenotypic plasticity.

The persistence of sown, temperate pasture species is an important determinant of perennial pasture-grass productivity. Defining the traits that affect persistence is essential for improving pasture longevity through plant breeding and for identifying criteria that should be included in cultivar ranking indices such as the DairyNZ, Forage Value Index. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in New Zealand pastures is typically infected with the mutualist Epichloë fungal endophyte, which assists the plant in resisting biotic and abiotic stresses. Ryegrass that has naturalised in New Zealand is highly infected with the ‘Standard’ strain of endophyte. This strain provides good protection from a range of invertebrate pests but negatively impacts livestock productivity and health in the warmer seasons of the year. Changes in the Common Agricultural Policy have led to the development of agri-environment schemes to deliver environmental goods from grasslands. These schemes encourage more extensive grazing systems, and change the emphasis from animal output to issues such as increasing biodiversity. Lower stocking densities are expected to promote the development of a heterogeneous habitat and associated compositional changes in plant species. Association mapping relies on linkage disequilibrium (LD) between haplotypes and quantitative trait loci (QTL). The level of LD in a genome determines the resolution of this approach. In out-breeding species, LD is expected to decay rapidly, thus allowing for high-resolution mapping. Comparative genetic mapping between plant species has established that there has been a conservation of genomic organisation which reflects evolutionary relationships. The genetic mapping of L. perenne has identified such syntenic relationships with both the Triticeae and rice. The recent publication of the complete sequence of the rice genome has allowed these relationships to be analysed more closely and has raised the possibility of using the rice genome as a template for chromosome landing-based gene identification in related non-model species. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is one of the most important perennial forage grasses for temperate climates. It is a highly productive grass with the highest nutritive value (Sokolovi et al., 2002). In Serbia, breeders have developed perennial ryegrass cultivars with high stabile yield and quality with different times of maturity and resistance to drought and frost. The initial breeding material were usually wild populations (Charmet et. al., 1996) with high variability and adaptability. These characteristics lend themselves for selection of superior genotypes. BAC libraries are an important tool in genomics, enabling physical maps, genome sequencing, marker development and map based cloning strategies. A BAC library has therefore been generated for the temperate grass species Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) which compliments an existing BAC library of the closely related species, Festuca pratensis also generated by IGER. Moreover the L. perenne BAC library will provide a useful tool for grass comparative genomics to compliment the existing BAC libraries of cereal crops including rice, wheat, barley, Sorghum and maize. Lolium perenne, as one of the most important forage grasses of temperate regions, combines a number of very useful characteristics, e.g., good seedling establishment, with a low resistance to drought and limited winter hardiness. Trait selection and introgression can be greatly enhanced by the use of molecular markers in a genetic linkage map. The aim of this project was the generation of a genomic microsatellite library which when combined with microsatellites developed from a Genethresher database would give good genome coverage coupled to high levels of marker polymorphism.

The nutritive value of forage changes during growth. For the protein content, a general evolution curve was found with the yield increase (Salette & Lemaire, 1984). The digestibility of the organic matter decreases during growth as cellulose and lignin content increase. Regrowth age is the main factor, which explains the digestibility decrease (Demarquilly & Jarrige, 1981). New varieties of Lolium perenne, bred for high sugar content, can contain up to 30% of water soluble carbohydrates (WSC). Only a fraction of such high contents are metabolised during a normal fermentation and the high residual sugar content (RSC) of these silages can improve the efficiency of use of nitrogen by ruminants. However, these RSC at opening for feed-out could be preferentially metabolised relative to fermentation products by all aerobically growing fungi and bacteria present on the forage. The effects of three rates of nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied to monocultures of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), and mixed ryegrass / clover swards, grazed by dairy cows on soil mineral nitrogen levels in the top 10cm of soil were studied on a dryland pasture in south-western, Victoria, Australia. Ammonium and nitrate were monitored for 14 months. Clover monocultures had significantly greater NO3- levels, however a similar trend was not observed for NH4+ .
