Digestibility (DMD) and crude protein (CP) percentage in leaf and stem of 4 cultivars each of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) grown at 3 day/night temperatures (12f7, 18/ 13, 28/23°C) and 2 CO2 concentrations (35 0 or 700 ppm) was estimated using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (N[RS). Differences between cultivars in DMD and CP were small and non-significant. Higher temperatures reduced DMD andCP in both species. DMD was unaffected by CO2 concentration in either species. To investigate availability of major elements to animals, N, P, K, Ca and Mg of plant dry matter were partitioned into 4 cell fractions based on enzyme solubility. When the elemental concentration of forage was compared, Dactylis glomerata was higher in K (1.69%), Festuca aru11dinacea in N (2.35%), K (1.68%) and Mg (Q.341 %) and Lolimum perenne in N (2.54%), P (0.224%) and Ca (0.457%). When compared between plant parts, concentrations of all elements.were higher in leaf than in stem, especially P, Ca and Mg. As a result of partitioning, more than 85% of P, K and Mg resided …

Data on tiller demography of perennation in prairie grass (Bromus wildenowii Kunth), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and tall fescue (Festuca anmdinacea Schreb,) are presented. Two pathways of perennation are described: a reproductive pathway in which perennation is by production of daughter tillers from flowering tillers, and a vegetative pathway in which perennation is by tillering from surviving non• flowering tillers. Both pathways normally contribute to perennation. The innuence of continuous grazing management on leaf extension, leaf senescence and tiller density of 3 grass species with contrasting tillering rates, tiller size and growth habit was examined. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv. Grasslands Nui), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb, cv. Grasslands Roa) and Yorkshire fog (Holc,,s la11allls L. cv. In an attempt to increase the nutritive quality of herbage, the plant growth regulator mefluidide was applied at low rates (0.15-0.30 kg ai/ha) to pure stands of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in early spring. There was a reduction in total dry matter production of 35.8% at 0.3 kg ai/ha, but because reproductive development was significantly reduced there was a useful increase in the green leaf harvest component from 1.3% to 41.6% of total dry matter. Four different grasses (perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) and timothy (Phelum pratense L.)) sown with white clover (Trifolium perenne L.) were evaluated under rotational goat grazing lo 10 cm in a cool temperate environment. Detailed measurements of the composition of vertical sward horizons, In spring, summer and autumn, showed significant differences in sward structure between pasture miX:tures. The characteristics of pastures receiving different systems of grazing management during September-May were examined over 3 years from September 1989. Three farmlets (each 10 0.8-ha areas) represented (i) rotational grazing every 30 days (September-May) (RG), (ii) fast rotations during spring (September-November) (SFR) and (iii) fast rotations during spring, summer and autumn (SeptemberMay) (SSFR). Pastures were predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trlfolium repens L.) grazed by dairy cows. Weaned 5-month-old lambs grazed 2 series of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) plots containing patches of mixed perennial ryegrass and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) varying in either a) the size of patches or b) the distance between patches. Both series embraced the same range of percentages (1-25) of ryegrass-clover patches in each plot. Diet composition was estimated from the pattern of naturAI alkanes in faeces collected between days 6 to 15 after allocation of the lambs to the treatments. To determine the influence of grass .height on ingestive behaviour of Japanese Black cattle, bite size and bolus size of a Japanese Black heifer (230 kg body weight) and a Japanese Black cow (450 kg body weight) were estimated on perennial ryegrass (Lolium pere,me L.) turfs. The grazing habit of 6 Japanese Black and 6 Holstein steers was compared on semi-natural pasture and improved perennial ryegrasswhite clover (Lolium perenne-Trifolium repens pasture in Japan. Japanese Black steers spent less time eating than Holstein steers on improved pasture. The ratio of walking while eating to total walking distance was lower for Japanese Blacks than for Holsteins, On the semi-natural pasture, Japanese Blacks .spent more time grazing than Holsteins and Japanese Blacks walked faster than Holsteins. On seminatural pasture, Japanese Blacks picked upper leaves always walking forward.

An experiment studying the behaviour of toll fescue (Fesutca anrundinacea Schreb,) was conducted under steady stale grazing on a sward dominated by this plant. The swards were grazed lo maintain a surface height of 30-40 mm (H), 50-60 mm (M) and 90-100 mm (L). These treatments were applied on swards with and without white clover (Trifolium repens L.) from November 1990 to April 1991. In a field experiment, an early• and a late-maturing cultivar of perennial ryegrass were cut during the primary growth in 6-weekly intervals starting when the early cultivar (Lolium perenne L.) reached stage of growth 31 (Simon & Park 1983, Proceedings XIV IGC), at 2 levels of nitrogen fertilisation. Dry mailer yield (DMY) in the regrowth was determined 4 weeks after defoliation in the primary growth. DMY in the regrowth decreased with delayed cutting in the primary growth. One hundred indigenous ryegrass populations were identified along 2 geographical gradients in Germany (west-east and north-south), Each population was sampled by collecting 180 tillers in 1991. The total 18 000 tillers were cultivated and will be examined as spaced plants (ex situ) in 1992 Nine selected populations were investigated in situ 1991. The results of the i11 situ investigations show high variability between and within the populations. The most valuable populations will be conserved as gene reserves within their environments (i11 situ). Promising material will in future be handed over to private breeders.

86 cullivars of perennial ryegrass from The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, France and Britain together with 9 New Zealand (NZ) cultivars were evaluated for agronomic potential in the cool, temperate southern region of NZ. Spaced plants of each cultivar were established in 1989 and screened for seasonal growth, moiphological features, head emergence, foliar diseases and endophyte presence. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to order the relative performance of the cultivars taking all characters into consideration. Effects of contrasting lucerne (Medicago saliva L.) cover (open versus closed canopy) on establishment of overdrilled Bromus wifldeowii Kunth cv. Grasslands Matua prairie grass, Pllalari:r aq11a1ica L. cv. Grasslands Matu phalaris and Loli11m pere111Ie L cv. Grasslands Nui perennial ryegrass were investigated. Prairie grass seedling survival was unaffected by lucerne cover at 84%. However, survival of ryegrass and phalaris was reduced to 35 and 46% of their respective values 'under open canopy. In an autumn-sown sward, Loilum perenne L. was sown at 100, 300, 600, 1000 and 2000 g/a, Dactylis glomerata L. at 600 gta, and a mixture of 6 species were sown together with SO g/a of R, obtusifolius. A technique is described for testing the response of cultivars to environmental factors using crossed, controlled gradients of mineral nutrient supply and simulated grazing. The usefulness of the technique was tested by growing the perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivar Melle and the cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) cultivar Sylvan in isolation and in a complex mixture on the matrix. Contour maps of the frequency of tillers of the cultivars after 2 years' growth indicated that Melle is better suited to high fertility, heavily stocked sites. The technique may be useful as a compact, standardised method for cultivar testing.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) plants, which contained an endophyte (Acremonium lolli), established at higher plant densities than ryegrass plants which seldom contained endophyte. Presence of endophyle did not affect ryegrass planl dry weight or tiller number. Application of phosphatic fertiliser, increased seeding rate, or use of seed which frequently contained endophyte could increase ryegrass tillers/m2• The growth of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), sown with the ryegrass, was reduced when endophyle was presenl in the grass. Sixty plants each of 2 lines of perennial ryegrass (lolium perenne L.) selected for low (LS) or high (HS) leaf shear breaking load were grown in a controlled environment. Transverse sections of 22 plants were taken to measure cross-sectional area (CSA) and proportions of sclerenchyma. LS leaves had significantly (P<0.001) lower lengths (258 v. 316 mm), widths (3.4 v. 4.0 mm), dry weights (32 v, 48 mg) and shear breaking loads (338 v. 574 g/leaO. CSA, estimated from the relationship CSA (mm2) = 0.265 width (mm) -0.239 (r2=0.86), was also significantly (P<0,001) lower for LS (0.68 v. 0.85 mm1), Leaf shear strengths per unit CSA were calculated as 501 (LS) and 690 (HS) g/mm1 (P<0.001). Sclerenchyma formed a significantly (P<0.01) lower proportion of LS than HS leaves (2,9 v. 6.1% of CSA). The cumulative force required to reduce particle sizes to 1 mm can be expressed as an Inde11 of Masticatory Load (IML) IML values were 2.84(LS) and 3.9l(HS) kg/mg DM (P<0,001), suggesting rates of passage from the rumen might be greater for LS leaves.

No significant differences were observed in dry matter (DM) intakes, rumen retention times or live weight gains of sheep fed lines of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L,)selected for low (LS) or high (HS) leaf shear breaking load (LSBL). Rates of DM intake were 25% greater, and 18% fewer jaw movements per g DM eaten were required, for test meals of LS compared with HS, but these differences were not significant. Hybrids between perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) accessions from Romania and Hungary were produced in an auempt to improve cold lolerance. Winter survival of hybrids was poorer than expected on the basis of parent performance. In a second breeding programme, introgression of genes from toll fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) into Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam,) was achieved using pentaploid hybrids between letraploid Italian ryegrass and hexaploid all fcscue and backcrossing twice to diploid Italian ryegrass, Good response to selection for improved drought tolerance was obtained in backcrossed progeny. In a rotational grazing experiment with dairy cows on monocullures of a diploid and 2 tetraploid cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), at a high herbage allowance the average daily production of fat and protein together was significantly higher on the tetraploids. This was associated with a difference in herbage intake of on average 0.6 kg/cow/day of organic matter and a higher concentration of volatile fatty acids and a lower pH in the rumen.

Earlier research in Australia and New Zealand has shown that legume growth and persistence may be reduced in the presence of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) which frequently contains the endophyte Acreonium lolli Mechanisms to explain these effects need further elucidation. The present work deals with the total yield and botanical composition of binary mixed pastures resulting from paired combinations of 8 grasses (Italian, perennial and hybrid ryegrass, cocksfoot, tall fescue, timothy, meadow softgrass and prairie grass) and 3 legumes (red clover, white clover and birdsfoot trefoil) with two levels of N, 160 and 320 kg/ha, during a 2-year field trial. In both years prairie grass was the most productive grass in the different combinations and its yield increased considerably with the high rate of N. Nodding thistle (Carduus nutans L.) is an important weed species in New Zealand pastures. The available information on interactions between this species and forage grasses and legumes is summarised and discussed. Nodding thistle inhibits pasture productivity, and allclopathy is probably Important at inhibiting pasture at the later stages of its life cycle. Although, nodding thistle is most susceptible to inhibition by forage species early in its life cycle, a minimum pasture cover may be required for seedlings to establish. In a grazing experiment with monocultures of 2 perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars it was found that over a 6-year period the tiller density of the tetraploid Condesa was on average 27% lower than that of the diploid Wendy. The lower tiller density of Condesa went along with a more open sward structure and higher weed proportions after 6 years, Sward structure was suitably characterised by means of absence frequency estimations of rooted perennial ryegrass tillers from concentric sampling quadrats.
