The search for the chemical or set of chemicals that act as a germination stimulant in Lactuca sativa v. Grand rapids (a variety of lettuce seed) was the underlying basis of this project. Through the development of a solid phase extraction (SPE) system different fractions of smoky water were tested for their effects on germination enhancement. The project targeted streamlining the amount of solvents as well as time used in past research on smoky water. Previously, several steps involving high perfo1mance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin layer chromatography (TLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC) were employed. This project used SPE cartridges to …

Germination is a key element in the development of a plant. This process encompasses several stages, one of which is the elongation of the radicle tip. This process has been noted to occur by different methods such as rapid mitotic division or cell elongation. However, such a mechcmism has not been studied in Phytolacca americana (pokeweed). It was the intention of this study to observe at the cellular level the nature of the Phytolacca americana radicle during normal germination. The Effects Of Berry Extracts From Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed) On Seed Germination, Kevin Blake Anderson

Extracts from the berries of Phytolacca americana (Pokeweed) exhibit the ability to inhibit germination of a variety of seeds, including its own. This inhibition has been shown to be effective even in dilute samples of the extracts. However, it is not known whether the germination inhibition caused by these extracts is induced by physical or by chemical mechanisms. This research proposes that the germination inhibition is induced by chemical inhibitors present within the berries. As plants evolve into new forms and shapes, the reproductive structures are often the last to change because of the importance of successful reproductive organs to the survival of the plant's hereditary information. Because of this particular feature, one very common method of determining how advanced a species is evolutionarily is the study of its reproductive cycle (Gifford and Foster, 1989). Phytolacca americana L., or common pokeweed, is a tall, branching, perennial herb whose uses range from the preparation of certain medicines to being cultivated as a vegetable. At the same time, however, pokeweed is also a highly poisonous plant and certain precautions must be taken in utilizing this weed. The following paper opens with a description of P. americana including its habitat, range, structure, uses, and toxicity. The second part of this paper will investigate the topic of allelopathy - its history and its future. The key to cultural control of weeds in cereal crops is an understanding of the factors which govern germination of the weed seeds.
Covering the seed with soil keeps out light, provides a stable moisture supply and makes germination faster than if the seed is left on the soil surface.
Shallow cultivation at the start of the growing season provides the soil cover needed for fast, even germination of weed seeds.

Field and laboratory studies of the silky prairie clover (Petalostemon villosum Nutt.) in central Minnesota indicated that seeds of this plant require scarification but do not require an overwintering period, to germinate. Germination and primary root growth are rapid; shoot growth appears to be quite slow. Methods of associating shoot growth with age are suggested and several notes on the life history of the plant ore presented.

Embryos of germinating seeds of Arceuthobium pusillum have four histological zones: the protoderm of the radicular apex, which remains distinct throughout germination and through anticlinal divisions gives rise to the epidermis; the procambium, which matures into a simple vascular strand in the mature radicle; the ground meristem, which matures into the cortex; and the promeristem, from which the procambium and ground meristem are derived.

It is the purpose of this paper to report the effects of thermal-neutron irradiation of maize and barley kernels on subsequent germination, plant establishment, and early plant development. Comparisons are made with equivalent neutron treatments of maize pollen, results of which have been reported in part in previous publications.
