Lupins are new as a commercial crop, but may be very old as a food plant. Types of the Mediterranean white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) have been part-developed and used as a subsistence crop for 3 000 years or more. Likewise the pearl lupin (L. mutabilis Sweet) has been grown for many centuries in the Andean Highlands of South America. In both cases the seeds are boiled and steeped in water for several days to rid them of their bitter, somewhat toxic alkaloids. They are then used directly as a valued protein source in human diets.

An Investigation Of The Nucleotide Cyclic 3'5' Adenosine Monophosphate In Young Hypocotyls Of Pisum Sativum L., Gary Marsh Hilton

Concentrations of cAMP increased with time in pea hypocotyls assayed at 24 hour intervals over a period of four days. The highest concentration was 20.1 pmoles/mg protein which occurred in 96 hour hypocotyl tips. Ninety-six hour root bodies (dissected region between tip and embryo) achieved a concentration of 8.6 pmoles/mg. Concentrations of cAMP in embryos remained constant around one pmole/mg for three days and values doubled on the fourth day.
Hypocotyls, after germination for 72 hours, were dissected and incubated for various lengths of time in water and 3xl0-8M IAA. Tips incubated for two hours showed a tenfold …

"If you want to bring in a good lupin harvest, thrash your wife soundly before you go out sowing in the field". Old Syrian Proverb.
Lupin breeder Dr. John Gladstones does not beat his wife as recommended in the Syrian proverb above. Nor is he known to use ground up lupin seeds for the diverse cosmetic and medicinal purposes recommended in ancient Roman and other texts on lupins.
But his modern work on lupin breeding and development has undoubtedly been influenced by his detailed study of such writings.

Development of subterranean clover varieties is a rapidly changing scene, particularly in terms of farmer acceptance, disease and persistency problems. This is only to be expected, because this is an agricultural plant of only some 50 to 70 years standing, whereas many other pasture plants have been in common use for thousands of years.

The first part of this article described the evolution of crop varieties and their improvement by simple selection. This part discusses cross-breeding and the other techniques which underly most modern plant breeding programmes.
The purpose cf crossing is to generate new combinations of varietal characteristics. It does not create anything basically new. All the genetic "ingredients" of a new variety must be present in one or other of the parents.

The systematic investigations of the potential of the Ord area for irrigated farming began during the Second World War when the possibilities of damming the river were first examined, initial soil survey was carried out, and agricultural experiments started. The Kimberley Research Station was established on its present site in 1945. A year later the State and Commonwealth Governments agreed to finance and operate the Station jointly, with CSIRO and the Western Australian Department of Agriculture being responsible for research.

ALTHOUGH it was first thought that all varieties of subterranean clover would cause ewe infertility, research in the last 10 to 15 years has shown that varieties differ in potency.
The relative level of potency has also been shown to remain consistent for any one variety under normal conditions.

RAPE belongs to the genus "Brassica" which also includes such plants as the garden cabbage, wild turnip and cultivated mustard.
The name is derived from the Latin word "rapum". meaning turnip.

Cereal varieties widely recommended for growing in 1969 are Gamenya and Falcon wheats, Dampier and Beecher barleys and Swan oats.
Other varieties include the new wheat Darkan, which is recommended only for the higher rainfall areas, the rust resistant wheats Mengavi and Gamut, and Irwin oats for late sowing in northeastern districts.

ROSE CLOVER is being produced and used in increasing quantities in south-western Australia. The first line named was designated Kondinin and five lines have now been given cultivar (variety) names.
One of the first samples of rose clover, C.P.I. 13949, introduced into Western Australia proved to be a mixture of two very similar types, differing visibly only in leaf markings.
The mixed sample was named Troodos,* and the selection from it, Olympus.
This paper describes the origin of the two varieties, their history and characteristics.

BUSSELL is a new high yielding 2-row barley variety named early in 1967.
An early maturing variety, with white grains of good quality, Bussell has short and extremely strong straw.
It has yielded more than any other variety under test in areas of Western Australia which receive more than 18 inches of annual rainfall.
It has yielded more than Prior in all areas.

Care and attention to detail will greatly increase the chances of establishing good subterranean clover pastures in the wheatbelt.
PASTURE ESTABLISHMENT usually takes second place to cropping in the wheatbelt, with many farmers "bunging in a bit of clover" and hoping for the best. The worst often transpires, with either patchy stands or complete failure resulting.
Using "cheap" methods of establishment is a short-sighted approach and a waste of energy and resources.

THE agricultural districts of Western Australia have a typically Mediterranean climate.

In 1951 a research program was started at the University of Nebraska to compare the developmental effects of thermal neutrons and X rays on different crop seeds. Three crops, barley, tomato and maize, were chosen for additional information involving induced chromosomal aberrations and seedling mutations. The maize investigations are presented in this bulletin, along with a comparison among the three crops with respect to irradiation effects.

Anthers of Lilium formosum were collected ranging from the very young to the mature. Anthers used for the writing of this paper were gathered around Easter time or early April. The anthers were removed from the bud and the ends were cut off. Each anther was cut into three or four parts at right angles to their respective lengths. After the washing, infiltration, and imbedding was completed, sections were cut from eight to ten micra in thickness. "Pedigree" or "Pure Line" selection is that system of selection under which the choice is made, not. solely because of the attractive appearance of the plant, but because of its ability to transmit its good qualities to the progeny. Such a system requires, and the method of selection ensures, that the qualities sought after shall be hereditary. For this purpose a record of ancestry is essential, hence the use of the term "pedigree."

This first edition Pinetum Brittanicum is regarded as an important British study of pines. Edward James Ravenscroft’s exquisitely detailed illustrations exemplify the widely embraced enthusiasm for the art and science of capturing and classifying conifers during the 19th-century. Ravenscroft was a master in the field of natural history illustration, which is often called “art in the service of science.”
