Four plant communities in the Great Dismal Swamp, located on the coastal plain in southeastern Virginia, were sampled and estimates of density, basal area and aboveground standing crop biomass were determined, Biomass was estimated as 229,800 kg/ha in the Chamaecyparis thyoides community and as 344,500 kg/ha in the Taxodium distichum community. The oak or Querus genus embraces about 450 species which are generally restricted to the cool temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Commercial cork is the over-abundant suberous tissue or bark from two rather unique members of the Querus genus, namely Q. suber and Q. occidentalis.
A lthough Western Australia has a most suitable climate for growing cork trees the potential of a local cork growing industry is severely limited.

This study investigated the role of the volatile oils of Douglas-fir seeds in olfactory seed detection by deer mice. The removal of these volatile oils from the seed reduces the ability of the deer mice to detect the seeds.
A method is outlined for the removal of the volatile oils from the seeds as well as a method to purify the oils for possible identification and quantification of individual components.

One serious problem faced by the forest industry in the Pacific Northwest is poor regeneration of commercial trees on land which is harvested and subsequently dominated by brush species. In Coastal Oregon, salmonberry is one of these brush species. Detailed investigations of field sites indicate that light intensity in the brush stands was low but sufficient for germination and early growth of Douglas-fir seedlings and soil moisture percentages and nutrient levels were high enough to support early Douglas-fir growth. Laboratory tests demonstrated the presence of leachable phytotoxins in the leaves of salmonberry. The hypothesis resulting from this study is that …

This species, a shrub between six and 15 feet in height, is the largest-flowered of all the species of Eucalyptus.
The name is intended to indicate this fact, but unfortunately the Greek work makros means "long" and actually the fruit "karpos" is remarkably short in comparison to its diameter, being in fact the broadest fruit within the genus.

THE Murchison pastoral country is usually thought of as either having a perennial grass cover, as in the Wandarrie, or as Mulga country with trees and short grass.
It is easy to overlook the small shrubs which occur all over the Murchison in every type of situation, and can provide high quality feed for sheep.
