Phylogeny And Systematics Of The Western Mediterranean Vella Pseudocytisus-V. Aspera Complex (Brassicaceae), Violeta I. Simón-Porcar, Ernesto Perez-Collazos, Pilar Catalan

Turkish Journal of Botany

The evolution and taxonomy of the core members of subtribe Vellinae (Brassicaceae), comprising Vella aspera, V. Bourgeana, and V. Pseudocytisus, is still poorly known. We reconstructed the evolutionary relationships among these taxa and other Vellinae and close Brassicaceae using nuclear ITS and plastid trnTF phylogenies, and analyzed the phenotypic traits that differentiate the infraspecific ranks of V. Pseudocytisus. Our phylogenetic analyses show: i) an early divergence of Succowia within the Brassiceae-Sisymbrieae sensu lato clade; ii) the nested positions of Vella bourgeana (syn. Euzomodendron bourgaeanum) and V. Aspera (syn. Boleum asperum) within the Vella clade; and iii) the split of 5 …

Porocercospora Seminalis Gen. Et Comb. Nov., The Causal Organism Of Buffalograss False Smut, Bimal S. Amaradasa, Hugo Madrid, Johannes Z. Groenewald, Pedro W. Crous, Keenan L. Amundsen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

False smut caused by Cercospora seminalis is an important disease of buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) affecting seed production. The pathogen prevents normal caryopsis development and causes considerable yield loss and reduced seed germination. The current taxonomic placement of the false-smut causal pathogen in the genus Cercospora is incorrect based on its morphological characteristics and DNA phylogeny. In the present study the phylogenetic position of C. seminalis is clarified based on DNA sequence analysis of three loci namely the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, partial nuclear ribosomal large subunit (LSU) and partial sequences of the RNA polymerase II second largest …

Phylogeny, Geographic Distribution, And New Taxonomic Circumscription Of The Crocus Reticulatus Species Group (Iridaceae), Dörte Harpke, Lorenzo Peruzzi, Helmut Kerndorff, Theophanis Karamplianis, Theophanis Constantinidis, Vladimir Randelovic, Novica Randelovic, Marina Juskovic, Erich Pasche, Frank R. Blattner

Turkish Journal of Botany

Recent phylogenetic analyses proved several infrageneric units within the genus Crocus to be para- or polyphyletic. In an attempt to arrive at a system of Crocus that closely reflects species relationships, we provide here phylogenetic, morphometric, geographic, and nomenclatorial data for the species of a narrower-defined, monophyletic Crocus series Reticulati. We sequenced the ETS and ITS regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA in 9 Reticulati and 19 outgroup species. Three chloroplast loci (trnL-F, rps16-trnQ, matK-trnK) were sequenced in the newly defined series Reticulati species and 1 outgroup. Data were analyzed with Bayesian and parsimony algorithms. The phylogenies resulted in 2 …

Assessment Of Genetic Relationships Among Secale Taxa By Using Issr And Irap Markers And The Chromosomal Distribution Of The Aac Microsatellite Sequence, Magdalena Achrem, Anna Kalinka, Stanislawa Maria Rogalska

Turkish Journal of Botany

Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP) techniques were used to investigate the genetic diversity among species of the genus Secale L. Chromosomal distribution of the AAC simple sequence repeat was examined by means of the fluorescent in situ hybridization technique. Comparative analysis revealed differences in the distribution of analyzed sequences in the genomes of Secale species. Using ISSR and IRAP data, a similarity matrix was constructed based on Dice’s coefficient, and the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean clustering was used to create dendrograms. Secale sylvestre Host and Secale strictum C.Presl were separated from a cluster consisting …

Caryopsis Micromorphological Survey Of The Genus Themeda (Poaceae) And Allied Spathaceous Genera In The Andropogoneae, Yu Zhang, Xiaoying Hu, Yunxiao Liu, Qing Liu

Turkish Journal of Botany

A caryopsis micromorphological survey of 15 species of the genus Themeda Forssk. (Poaceae) and 4 species of allied spathaceous genera in tribe Andropogoneae allowed the recognition of 2 types of caryopses based on the ventral face and embryo shape for the first time. One kind of caryopsis had a concave ventral face with a grooved embryo, and the other kind of caryopsis had a flat ventral face with a keel-shaped embryo. Although the ventral face and embryo shapes had limited taxonomic value at the infrageneric level, the caryopsis shapes, embryo proportion, and sculpturing patterns were found to be valuable taxonomic …
