Temperate Eurasian Origins Of Hawaiian Chenopodium (Amaranthaceae) Plus Description Of A New Species Endemic To Moloka‘I, Jason T. Cantley, Angela J. Mcdonnell, J Branson, S R. Long, W Garnett, Christopher T. Martine
Faculty Journal Articles
Chenopodium taxa of Hawai‘i are tetraploids distinguished from other members of the circumglobally distributed genus by minute morphological characters. Because of these reasons, the geographic origin of Hawaiian Chenopodium has remained unclear. Across the Hawaiian Archipelago, Chenopodium taxa are morphologically variable and grow in highly disparate xeric habitats, especially in terms of precipitation, temperature, wind, salt spray, and solar irradiation. Habitats include dry subalpine shrublands, sandy beach strand of atolls in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, dry forests, and precipitously tall sea cliffs of northwestern Moloka‘i. From the Moloka‘i sea cliffs, which are battered by high energy winds, salt spray, and …

In this context, the results are these: (1) in 14 taxa, the first report on chromosomes numbers; (2) in 2 taxa, equal chromosome numbers as in the previous report; (3) in all taxa, the first report of detailed karyotype analyses; (4) karyotype asymmetry data and generally symmetrical karyotypes; (5) karyotypic variations by mechanisms of dysploidy and polyploidy; and (6) phylogenetic relationships in Paronychia. The data indicate that Anatolia is an important area for …
Systematics And Ecology Of The Andean Neotropical Schefflera (Araliaceae) With Globose Capitate Inflorescences And Use Of Niche Modeling For Iucn Red List Threat Assessment Of Plerandra Elegantissima (Araliaceae), Carlos V. Rodrigues
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since the end of the 19thcentury, ScheffleraJ.R. Forst. & G. Forst.has been recognized as the largest and most wide-ranging genus of Araliaceae. It can be found throughout the humid tropics and subtropics, is not particularly diverse at low elevations in the warmest regions, and a few taxa extend into warm-temperate areas. As currently circumscribed, the genus contains 605 described species and many hundreds more awaiting formal description. However, a succession of phylogenetic studies have confirmed that Schefflera, as currently circumscribed,is polyphyletic, comprising five geographically centered lineages scattered across the phylogenetic tree of Araliaceae, and …

Atriplex mollis Desf. (Amaranthaceae), a North African endemic halophytic species, is further described in this study. Phylogenetic analysis based on a combined dataset of ITS and ETS rDNA and atpB-rbcL and trnK cpDNA showed that A. mollis is closely related to the Malta- and Gozo-endemic Cremnophyton lanfrancoi Brullo & Pavone. Given this close phylogenetic relationship, A. mollis is also considered among the oldest species of Atriplex, together with C. lanfrancoi. Molecular data also suggest that A. mollis in North Africa, C. lanfrancoi on Malta Island, and Atriplex cana Ledeb.in Eurasian semideserts constitute a separate clade within the tribe Atripliceae. As …

Phylogenetic Patterns Of Foliar Mineral Nutrient Accumulation Among Gypsophiles And Their Relatives In The Chihuahuan Desert, Clare Muller, Michael J. Moore, Zoe Feder, Helene Tiley, Rebecca E. Drenovsky
2017 Faculty Bibliography
PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Gypsum endemism in plants (gypsophily) is common on gypsum outcrops worldwide, but little is known about the functional ecology of Chihuahuan Desert gypsophiles. We investigated whether leaf chemistry of gypsophile lineages from the northern Chihuahuan Desert are similar to leaves of related nonendemic (gypsovag) species relative to their soil chemistry. We expected widely distributed gypsophiles (hypothesized to be older lineages on gypsum) would have distinct leaf chemistry from narrowly distributed, relatively younger lineages endemic to gypsum and gypsovags, reflecting adaptation to gypsum.
METHODS: We collected leaves from 23 gypsophiles and related nonendemic taxa growing on nongypsum …

Systematics, Biogeography, And Species Delimitation Of The Malagasy Psorospermum (Hypericaceae), Heritiana S. Ranarivelo
Dissertations
Psorospermum belongs to the tribe Vismieae (Hypericaceae). Morphologically, Psorospermum is very similar to Harungana, which also belongs to Vismieae along with another genus, Vismia. Interestingly, Harungana occurs in both Madagascar and mainland Africa, as does Psorospermum; Vismia occurs in both Africa and the New World. However, the phylogeny of the tribe and the relationship between the three genera are uncertain. Using freshly collected specimens from my fieldwork as well as extant herbarium specimens, I aimed first, to generate a phylogeny of Psorospermum; second, to investigate its biogeography; and third, to investigate species boundaries within Malagasy Psorospermum …

Turkish Journal of Botany
The long-neglected lichen described as Cladonia trapezuntica was rediscovered at its type locality in Turkey thanks to historical maps available at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Molecular, morphological, and chemical analyses were applied to determine whether C. Trapezuntica is a distinct species or rather falls within the phenotypic variation of Pycnothelia papillaria. Although most of the podetia appear to be unusual for P. Papillaria, the molecular evidence indicates that C. Trapezuntica should be considered as a synonym of P. Papillaria, and the cushion-like growth form, taller podetia with irregular to dichotomously or trichotomously branching pattern, and scarce primary thallus …

Matthiola W.T.Aiton is a taxonomically complex genus in which there are many problems, mostly with Matthiola longipetala and M. Odoratissima. Matthiola species native to Turkey were collected from various locations in Anatolia, and their DNA was isolated. Revision studies performed on the basis of molecular data obtained from studies conducted in recent years have made the phylogenetic relationships and systematic positions of the taxa more apparent and reliable. Consequently, the remaining taxonomic problems among the species have been resolved through the use of DNA-based molecular analysis methods, which, unlike phenotype studies, are not affected by environmental factors. The inter-simple sequence …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Molecular analyses of ITS nrDNA, using 42 new and 56 GenBank sequences, revealed 12 supported lineages of Athallia consistent with phenotype data. We regard these lineages as species. Eight of them were previously recognized as species in Athallia, and here we make three new combinations: A. Baltistanica, A. Brachyspora, and A. Necator. Eight of these species have been recorded in Turkey; of them, A. Baltistanica and A. Saxifragarum are new to the country. The former is also new to Greece. Athallia baltistanica is recorded for the first time outside the Karakoram Mountains (N Pakistan). We propose a broader species concept …

Turkish Journal of Botany
We tested the phylogenetic utility of three chloroplast DNA loci, i.e. the trnL(UAA) intron, trnL(UAA)-F(GAA) intergenic spacer (IGS), and trnV(UAC) intron, across thirteen native Oxytropis species. Our objective was to determine whether any of these chloroplast DNA markers could be beneficial to figure out phylogenetic relationships among Oxytropis species. To increase the interspecific sampling, nine sequences of the trnL intron and trnL-F regions were retrieved from GenBank and included in the analyses. No sequence of the trnV intron region was available in the database and so only sequences of the native species were used for the analyses. Phylogenies derived from …

Molecular Phylogenetics And Historical Biogeography Of The Tribe Chiococceae (Rubiaceae), Sushil Kumar Paudyal
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Chiococceae are a monophyletic assemblage of morphologically very diverse groups of plants ranging in habit from subshrubs to shrubs to tall trees exhibiting an astonishing variation in shapes and sizes of corolla, and kinds of fruits and seeds. They are primarily distributed in the Neotropics but also occur in the West Pacific islands; thus exhibiting amphi-Pacific tropical disjunction. This study addresses the phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of the Chiococceae using molecular DNA sequence data, and presents novel data on the tribal and generic delimitations, intergeneric relationships, and the origin and dispersal of this group.
In the most recent tribal delimitations …

Towards A New Classification Of Salvia S.L.: (Re)Establishing The Genus Pleudia Raf., Maria Will, Natalie Schmalz, Regine Classen-Bockhoff
Turkish Journal of Botany
Salvia L. İn its traditional circumscription is the largest genus within the mint family. To date, the magnitude of the task has rendered it difficult to provide a genus-wide revision based on morphological data. Current molecular investigations based on a dense taxon sampling representing the whole phenotypic diversity and distribution range of Salvia confirmed that the genus is polyphyletic. Salvia species fall in 4 distinct clades, although all of them, except Clade IV, also include non-Salvia genera. A taxonomic revision is thus urgently needed with two different approaches that have to be considered: (1) to include the 5 morphologically distinct …

Genetic Diversity And Relationships Within And Among Onobrychis Species Using Molecular Markers, Mohammad Zarrabian, Mohammad Mahdi Majidi
Turkish Journal of Botany
Little is known about the taxonomic relationships of the genus Onobrychis (Fabaceae). To study inter- and intraspecific variations and the relationships among the species, 102 accessions (33 species) of the genus Onobrychis were evaluated using 22 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Almost all the species belonging to the section Onobrychis clustered together. A similar pattern was found with the species belonging to the section Hymenobrychis, while those of the section Lophobrychis did not cluster together. The results indicate that the section Lophobrychis has a comparatively derived organization that can be attributed to the differences in their taxonomic delimitation. Geographical pattern …
