Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Owens Peak lies at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada within the Bureau of Land Management’s Owens Peak Wilderness Area in Kern County, California. The study site, ca. 50 square miles, encompasses Owens Peak’s eastern watershed, and ranges in elevation from 800–2600 m (2600–8400 ft). Granite rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith underlie the study area. The eastern watershed of Owens Peak is botanically diverse, with 64 families, 230 genera, and 440 taxa currently documented. Floristic elements within the study area include the southern Sierra Nevada, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert. The flora previously was poorly documented, as discovered …

This research was carried out from 2004 to 2006 in order to determine the flora of the region between Zeytinbahçe and Akarçay, Birecik district. The research area is situated in Şanlıurfa province and within C7 of the grid system. In the area, 442 taxa belonging to 62 families and 253 genera were determined. Of all the collected specimens, 30 taxa are new records for the C7 square, 16 (3.59%) taxa are endemic for Turkey, 2 taxa belong to Cryptogamae, and 440 taxa belong to Phanerogamae. Spiderwort is an herbaceous perennial that arises from a cluster of rather stout overwintering roots. Stems may be solitary or more commonly clumped, and usually grow unbranched, reaching heights up to 40 cm tall. Stems are smooth or bear scattered short hairs. Leaves are 2—5 per stem, attached by means of a leaf sheath that is 13 cm long. Leaf blades are dull green, elongate, ending in a gradually tapered tip, flat or keeled, smooth (without hairs), and 1—3.5 dm long by 0.5—2.5 cm wide. The vascular flora of the Camili Biosphere Reserve Area (Borçka, Artvin) was studied between 2002 and 2005. In the area under review, 990 taxa belonging to 432 genera and 110 families were identified. Of the 990 taxa, 37 Pteridophytes and 953 Spermatophytes were detected. Spermatophytes also contained 7 Gymnospermae and 946 Angiospermae taxa. The richest 3 families are Compositae with 114 taxa (11.5%), Gramineae with 69 taxa (7.0%), and Leguminosae with 59 taxa (6.0%). The richest genera are Veronica L. and Campanula L. The present study is concerned with the flora of the Kalabak Basin, an area lying to the south-west of the city of Eskişehir that supplies Eskişehir with drinking water. As a result of our evaluation of the plant specimens collected over 3 years (2001 to 2003), 71 families, as well as 575 taxa belonging to 307 genera, were determined to occur in the study area (569 species, 3 subspecies, and 3 varieties). Two of these taxa belong to Pteridophytes, 5 belong to Gymnosperms, and 568 belong to Angiosperms (488 Dicotyledons, 80 Monocotyledons) subdivisions. Paris quadrifolia L. (Liliaceae) was collected from Northeast Anatolia (A9 Ardahan). It is reported for the first time from Turkey. Line drawings, diagnostic characters and a distribution map of Paris L. species of Turkey are presented.

This study was carried out between 2001 and 2004 to determine the geophytic flora of Şanlıurfa, located within C6, C7, and C8 of the grid system in Turkey. In all, 789 plant specimens that consisted of 104 taxa belonging to 13 families and 30 genera were gathered from the investigation area. Of all the collected specimens, 19 taxa were new records for C6, C7, and C8, and 11 taxa were endemic to Turkey. Scilla mesopotamica Speta, which was first collected from Şanlıurfa-Halfeti in 1888 by Sintenis and was considered a missing species, was rediscovered after 116 years during this study. …

Vascular Flora Of Forest Vegetation In Altındere Valley (Maçka-Trabzon), Alper Uzun, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu

The vascular flora of forest vegetation in Altındere Valley (Maçka-Trabzon) was investigated. The study was conducted between 2001 and 2002, during which time 1200 plant samples were collected. In all, 383 vascular taxa belonging to 246 genera and 84 families were identified. The richest family was Asteraceae (35, 9.1%), followed by Lamiaceae (27, 7.0%) and Fabaceae (23, 6.0%). Additionally, the richest genus was Campanula L. (7, 1.82%), followed by Trifolium L. (6, 1.56%) and Acer L. (6, 1.56%). The phytogeographical regions of 209 (54.56%) taxa were determined. The present study involves the flora of Balıkdamı Wetland and its surroundings in Sivrihisar, Eskişehir, Turkey. This 2-year study (2002-2003) examined the plant samples collected in this region and determined that there are 51 families, as well as 250 taxa belonging to 173 genera (247 species, 1 subspecies, and 2 varieties). All of these taxa belong to the Angiosperms (201 Dicotyledons, 49 Monocotyledons) subdivision. This study was carried out to determine the flora of the area between Üzümlü and Sakaltutan (Erzincan-Gümüşhane). In this research, conducted between 2001 and 2006, 5210 plant specimens were collected from the research area, and 960 taxa (at specific and intraspecific ranks) belonging to 344 genera and 73 families were reported. The Sonoran and Mojave deserts meet just north of the Whipple Mountains, which are situated in southeast San Bernardino County, California, along the Colorado River and adjacent to Arizona. Vegetation from the Pleistocene to the present was inferred from previously published packrat midden data and the current floristic composition. Climate data suggest that summer rainfall is a factor underlying the vegetational differences between the western and eastern portions of the Sonoran desert. Plant collections in the area yielded primarily California Sonoran plants, but also several Mojave and Arizona Sonoran plants. A fair number of the Arizona Sonoran plants collected were …

Serratula oligocephala DC. is currently reported as an endemic species of Turkey, where it has limited distribution in east and south Anatolia. Specimens collected from the continental humid slopes beneath the northern summits of the Mount Lebanon Range in the eastern Mediterranean confirm the occurrence of the species in Lebanon.

This paper presents a floristic study of Pirreşit Mountain. The research was carried out in 1997 and 1998, and 3500 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined as 820 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 767 species, 309 genera, and 65 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (125 taxa), Poaceae (89 taxa), and Fabaceae (72 taxa). The largest genera were Astragalus L. (28), Silene L. (23), and Centaurea L. (16). The investigation area is within the C2 grid-square and located within Burdur province. This research was conducted between 1999 and 2002. Nearly 1000 plant specimens were collected and 413 Spermatophyta taxa belonging to 55 families were identified from these specimens. Among the identified taxa, 3 are from Gymnospermae, and 410 from Angiospermae (51 of the Angiospermae are Monocotyledones and 359 are Dicotyledones members). The number of endemic taxa was 83 and this number constitutes 20.1% of the total flora.

Scilla siberica Haw. subsp. armena (Grossh.) Mordak (Liliaceae) has not been previously reported among the flora of Lebanon. In spring 2005 it was collected from the rocky cliffs of a natural rocky bridge in the high mountain zone of the Mount Lebanon Range.

Two New Records From Lebanon: Chamaesyce Nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) And Eleusine Indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae), Ricardus M. Haber, Myrna T. Semaan

Chamaesyce nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) and Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae) are described as new records for the flora of Lebanon. Specimens of C. nutans collected from roadsides and rocks in a middle mountain forest confirm the occurrence of the species on the western slopes of the Mount Lebanon Range. Additionally, specimens of E. indica were collected from wasteland and roadsides in the coastal town of Kaslik. The species were observed to thrive abundantly in similar habitats along the coastal urban zone of Lebanon.

This paper describes a floristic study of Akçadağ. The research was carried out between 2000 and 2002. During the study period, 2650 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined to include 891 taxa (at specific and intraspecific ranks) belonging to 738 species, 328 genera, and 70 families. The distribution of Campanula radula Fisch. in Turkey is recorded for the first time. Thirty-five taxa were defined as new records for the B9 square. Atamasco lily is a perennial herb that grows from a subterranean bulb. The bulb is dark, with a short neck and papery tunic formed by remnants of old leaf bases. Leaves are glossy green, linear, flat to somewhat concave, up to one half inch wide, approximately one foot in length and, overall, rather grasslike. When not in flower the plants can be easily overlooked. Flowering stems are leafless scapes that are about as long as the leaves. In crosssection the scapes are hollow. A new late flowering, reddish brown Iris L. species from the subgenus Scorpiris Spach, Iris nezahatiae Güner & H.Duman, is described and illustrated from north-east Turkey. Its distinguishing characters, affinities, and ecology are discussed and its threat category is assessed as 'Critically endangered (CR)'.

Field studies were carried out to determine the vascular flora of the Gölcük area (Bolu) during 1997-1998. At the end of the evaluation of the identification of the collected specimens and the results of previous studies, 80 families, 277 genera, 461 species and 475 taxa in total were determined. The rates of species belonging to certain phytogegraphical regions are as follows: the Euro-Siberians 30.8% (142 spp.), the Irano-Turanians 1.5% (7 spp.), the Mediterraneans 5.2% (24 spp.), and phytogeographically unknown 58.4% (269 spp.). The number of endemic taxa found in the research area is 16; thus the endemism rate is 3.5%. …

Panderia pilosa Fisch. & C.A.Mey. (Chenopodiaceae) was never previously reported for the flora of Lebanon, although it occurs in all neighbouring countries. Specimens collected from Mount Mnaitra in the Mount Lebanon range confirm its presence.

The subalpine and alpine flora of Altındere Valley (Maçka, Trabzon) was investigated during 2000-2002. The study area is situated in the Colchis sector of the Euro-Siberian floristic area of the Holarctic region with regard to plant geography. In this area, 384 plant taxa belonging to 61 families and 190 genera were determined. The largest family is Asteraceae (39; 10%), and the second largest is Rosaceae (35; 9%). The rates of the taxa belonging to certain phytogeographical regions are as follows: 50.27% Euro-Siberian, 5.99% Irano-Turanian and 1.04% Mediterranean. An interesting chasmophytic Teucrium specimen was collected from Siirt, SE Turkey. It was identified according to the Flora of Turkey as T. paederotoides but with some doubt about certain characters. It was identified as T. chasmophyticum without any doubt from Flora Iranica. Because of some indistinct points between these 2 taxa, the recently described taxon was re-evaluated. The type specimen of the taxon was examined at W herbarium and its revised description is given here. A photograph of the type specimen and the Turkish material taken from the field is supplied along with a map.

A list of 75 lichen taxa is reported from Gürgendağı Mountain located to the north of Kazdağı (Ida Mountain), in Çanakkale province. Among the identified taxa, 41 taxa are epiphytic, 26 saxicolous and 8 terricolous. All of the taxa are new records for the area. Nineteen taxa are new for the province.

Spicebush is a multistemmed deciduous shrub that grows to a height of one to three meters. Young stems are delicate and may be smooth or finely hairy. Leaves are alternate and simple, with an elliptic to obovate blade that tapers at both the base and apex and is bounded by a smooth margin. Examined closely, the margin will reveal a series of fine hairs that project directly out from the leaf edge. This paper describes a floristic study of Bozburun Mountain and its environs. The study was conducted between 1998 and 2002, during which time 2419 vascular plant samples were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the total flora was determined to consist of 645 taxa belonging to 341 genera and 86 families. The endemism rate of the 645 taxa was 16.1% (n = 104 taxa). Although two major books have been published on the Mongolian flora regional data are often still lacking due to the vast expanses of the country. Therefore we used published information and data from our own fieldwork to compile a relatively comprehensive inventory of the flora of the Gobi Gurvan Saykhan mountains in southern Mongolia.
