Contributions To The Macrofungal Diversity Of Antalya Province, Mehmet Hali̇l Solak, Hakan Alli, Mustafa Işiloğlu, Hali̇l Güngör, Erbi̇l Kalmiş
Turkish Journal of Botany
In this study, an attempt has been made to establish macrofungal specimens collected from Antalya between 2005 and 2009. After field and laboratory studies, 136 taxa belonging to 40 families and 2 divisions were identified. Twenty taxa belong to Ascomycota and 116 to Basidiomycota. Three of them, Cortinarius subferrugineus (Batsch) Fr., Entoloma vernum Lundell, and Inocybe piceae Stangl & Schwöbel, are new records for Turkey.

The present survey reports maximum parsimony (MP) and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of the genus Potentilla L. in Iran using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the trnL-F intergenic region of chloroplast DNA. A total of 25 taxa from 9 sections, 2 intersectional hybrids, and 4 related genera of Iranian taxa plus 40 previously sequenced data were analyzed for both trnL-F and nrDNA ITS regions. Individual and combined analysis of ITS and trnL/F data revealed monophyly of the genus Potentilla. Olive (Olea europaea L.) is an important fruit crop, with many health promoting properties being continuously discovered. With over 40 species, almonds (Amygdalus L.) are among the most economically important Rosaceae fruit crops distributed in the Irano-Turanian region of southwestern and Central Asia and southeastern Europe. While Amygdalus is considered a separate genus in floristic treatments of Asian countries it is a subgenus or a section of Prunus L. s.l. in other treatments. Phylogenetic relationships of the Iranian wild almonds based on data from 2 nuclear and chloroplast spacers (nrDNA ITS and cpDNA trnS-trnG) were constructed using the maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and NeighborNet methods. Artemisia pallens Wall. is an important aromatic medicinal plant used as a folk remedy for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The present study was initiated to explore in vitro propagation of Artemisia pallens using different explants on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with varying concentrations and combinations of growth regulators. Highest callogenic response (100%) was shown by shoot tip explants with 2 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The highest number of shoots (14.25 ± 1.65) and highest shoot length (4.25 ± 0.47 cm) were observed on MS medium with 3 mg/L kinetin. After 40 days, shoots grown in vitro were transferred …

A pot culture study was performed to evaluate the differences between salt-stressed pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants of tolerant (Climax and Samarina Zard) and sensitive (Ambassidar and PF-400) genotypes, and to determine whether treatment with 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) could enhance the accumulation of osmolytes and antioxidant activity and thereby induce tolerance in salt-stressed plants. Three-week-old seedlings were subjected to +NaCl (5 dS m^-1) and -NaCl conditions (0 dS m^-1). After 4 days of salt stress, the plants were sprayed with Milli-Q water or EBL (0.125 mg L^-1). Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre, a fast-growing oil-seed-producing tree legume, has the ability to grow on wastelands. It can be utilized for biofuel plantation on such lands. The preconditioning of young seedlings during the early stage of development with efficient arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) confers several benefits enhancing the possibility of their establishment in fields after outplanting from nurseries. However, before recommending these fungi for inoculation, the suitable AMF species must be identified. Spatial Distribution And Soil Characteristics Of The Vegetation Associated With Common Succulent Plants In Egypt, Monier Abd El-Ghani, Ashraf Soliman, Reham Abd El-Fattah

The most succulent species-rich family in Egypt is Chenopodiaceae, followed by Aizoaceae and then Zygophyllaceae, Crassulaceae, and Orobanchaceae. The Sinai Peninsula and the Mediterranean regions include most of these succulent species, at 73.2% and 53.7%, respectively. A floristic data matrix (59 stands and 137 species) was subjected to classification by 2-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). This yielded 8 vegetation groups. The most prominent groups were the Mesembryanthemum crystallinum-Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum group, the Anabasis articulata group, the Zygophyllum coccineum-Zilla spinosa group, and the Zygophyllum album group. Morganella arenicola Alfredo & Baseia sp. nov. from Brazilian forests is proposed as a new species based on its morphological features. A comparative analysis of several collections of Morganella compacta (G.Cunn.) Kreisel & Dring, including the holotype, is added. Detailed description, taxonomical remarks, and illustrations with photographs and scanning electron microscopy of the basidiospores are given.

In this work, the valve fine structure, morphology, and dimensions of the epibenthic diatoms living on the marine hydroid Eudendrium racemosum Cavolini were investigated through SEM analysis. Hydroid samples were collected from the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean Sea), from October 2002 to October 2003, with monthly frequency, allowing definition of the annual cycle of diatom communities. Following several taxonomic/systematic papers, this floristics paper documents 32 new records of diatoms (13 araphid, 17 biraphid, 2 monoraphid), which have been classified into different growth forms (adnate, erect, motile, tube-dwelling). In this study, Mollisia ventosa P.Karst., Hymenoscyphus herbarum (Pers.) Dennis, H. immutabilis (Fuckel) Dennis, H. robustior (P.Karst.) Dennis, Ciboria amentacea (Balb.) Fuckel, and Peziza fimeti (Fuckel) E.C.Hansen have been recorded in Turkey for the first time. Comments on their morphological and anatomical features, geographical position, locality, collection date, and distribution and short descriptions and photographs related to macro- and micromorphologies of the taxa are provided.

An Alternative Approach In Sectioning Of Archaeological Woods: The Case Of Quercus Pontica, Bedri̇ Serdar, Reha Mazlum

An alternative approach to the sectioning of archaeological woods is presented in this paper. The samples that we study were obtained through the excavations carried out in Yenikapı (Marmaray), İstanbul. Neolithic-aged wood samples were studied and identified using the frozen sliding microtome method. This method was utilized for the cross-sectioning of a leaf in 1984 for the first time. This work extends its usage by exploiting the method for the purpose of sectioning Neolithic-aged wood samples and providing a case of Quercus pontica C.Koch.

The phylogeny of Astragalus L. section Anthylloidei DC. and its interrelationship with allies were examined. The study was conducted using nrDNA ITS and plastid rpl32-trnL_{(UAG)} sequences. Astragalus sect. Anthylloidei is nonmonophyletic, and its members are scattered across the tree in 4 well-supported clades and intermixed with members of other spiny sections. All the multispecific informal groups of the section, with the exception of A. murinus Boiss. group, are not monophyletic. Morphological character evolution was mapped on the molecular tree. Our results suggest that morphology cannot elucidate infrageneric relationships in spiny Astragalus accurately; analyzed characters have evolved several times in sect. …

A caryopsis micromorphological survey of 15 species of the genus Themeda Forssk. (Poaceae) and 4 species of allied spathaceous genera in tribe Andropogoneae allowed the recognition of 2 types of caryopses based on the ventral face and embryo shape for the first time. One kind of caryopsis had a concave ventral face with a grooved embryo, and the other kind of caryopsis had a flat ventral face with a keel-shaped embryo. Cystatin responses in sugarcane plants under drought stress have not previously been reported. To test the hypothesis that sugar cane cystatin can function as an osmotic stress tolerance gene, transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) strains with the ability to express sugarcane cystatin were constructed. The osmotic stress tolerance of the transgenic yeasts was then evaluated, and it was found that the transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) had increased growth and increased osmotic stress tolerance. Immature seeds were cultured on 10 different media for germination. Maximum germination was achieved on Lindeman orchid medium (37.12%) within 17 days of culturing. Protocorms with leaf primordia were cultured on BM-2 and 7 different modifications of Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with various hormone combinations [0-3 mg/L indole butyric acid (IBA) and 0-3 mg/L kinetin (Kin)] for plantlet regeneration and mass multiplication. Orthotrichum Pamiricum (Bryophyta), A New Epiphytic Moss Species From Pamir Mountains In Central Asia, Vitezslav Plasek, Jakub Sawicki, Lukas Cihal

Orthotrichum pamiricum Plasek & Sawicki is described as a new species from the western foothills of the Pamir Mountains of the Tajik-Afghan border in Central Asia. It is placed in Orthotrichum Hedw. subg. Pulchella (Schimp.) Vitt. The species is characterized by obtuse leaf apices, cryptoporous stomata, an exostome composed of 8 pairs of the teeth that are recurved when dry, and an endostome with 16 thin and incurved segments. Molecular data indicating the phylogenetic placement of O. pamiricum are also presented.

Cyanobacteria are expected to adjust to new conditions better than other primary producers since they have a long history of adaptation as one of the first organisms on earth. Their ecophysiological adaptations differ widely among cyanobacterial species. As a stratified species, P. rubescens forms a population in the metalimnion during summer months in lakes with clear water and disperses in the whole water column during the period. This study aimed to explain the seasonal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the pelagic zone of a deep alkaline lake that is characterized by low phytoplankton abundance. Phytoplankton and water samples were collected seasonally from 9 points and 7 depths between the surface and 20 m from December 2004 to September 2005. Planktolyngbya contorta was the dominant or subdominant species in all seasons and depths. The dominance of Gomphonema species was observed in December, but they were subdominant in September. Twelve plantain ecotypes were characterized for molecular variability using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Out of the 60 RAPD and 40 ISSR primers tested, 16 RAPD and 14 ISSR primers were found polymorphic, and were used for molecular profiling of the plantain ecotypes. Phytoliths in Poa pratensis L. (Poaceae) leaf blades and sheaths are described in this study. The role of plant opal particles-known as phytoliths-is considerable in taxonomical studies, and their long-term preservation in sediments makes them a useful tool in the reconstruction of ancient plant communities and plant-human interactions. All together, 2244 phytoliths were counted and analyzed in 25 plant samples (5 shoots of 5 specimens and approximately 500-600 phytoliths per specimen). The biogenic silica content of P. pratensis leaves was determined at 2.61%, and 27 morphotypes have been described using the International Code for Phytolith Nomenclature. Pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) were exposed to NaCl and/or NiCl_2 stress to investigate whether pure proline and Lolium perenne L. (LP) leaf extract could efficaciously protect against the phytotoxicity generated by nickel and/or salinity stress in pea. Both stress factors (salinity and nickel) significantly inhibited growth, total chlorophyll content, photosynthetic activity, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO_2 level, relative water content (RWC), and membrane stability index (MSI). However, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, proline, glycine betaine, total free amino acids, total soluble sugars, total phenolic compounds, tocopherol contents, lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage were significantly increased. In the present study, typifications, a list of synonyms, descriptions, ecology, phytogeographical regions, conservation status, and distribution of all studied taxa are given. It differs from Reseda armena by the following characters: densely smaller, unbranched at the upper part, papillate-hispidulous stems; dark green, thicker, and densely papillate-hispidulous leaves; bigger petals; smaller pedicels; relatively smaller with sinus seeds; oblate-spheroidal, tricolporate, and rugulate pollen grains. The family of AP2/ERF plant specific transcription factors, including dehydration-responsive element binding (DREB) proteins, has been reported to activate and bind with the dehydration responsive element/C repeat (DRE/CRT) of stress-inducible gene promoters. We amplified DREB1A from Oryza sativa var. IR6 (807 bp) and subjected it to protein homology modelling and phylogenetic analysis. BLAST sequence analysis indicated high similarity (99%) with the O. sativa japonica group. Phylogenetic analysis was carried out with other 12 DREB sequences from cereals/grasses using Clustal Omega. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a starchy and tuberous crop that is also important for its potassium and vitamin contents. Though potato is the world's fourth largest food crop, its miRNAs and their targets have not been well studied. Here we report a comparative genomics approach that was applied to explore miRNAs and their targeted proteins in potato.
