A careful analysis of the paper entitiled Increasing nuclear ploidy enhances the capability of antioxidant defense and reduces chromotoxicity in Lathyrus sativus roots under cadmium stress published in Turk J Bot 2014 (4) has led to conclusion that there exist some modification on the pictures used. Therefore Editorial Board of Turkish Journal of Botany decided to retract this article.

Spatiotemporal Distribution In Phytoplankton Community With Distinct Salinity Regimes Along The Mandovi Estuary, Goa, India, Suraksha Mohan Pednekar, Vijaya Kerkar, Shivprasad Ganesh Prabhu Matondkar

Seasonal variations in the composition and abundance of phytoplankton were investigated fortnightly at 3 different regions along the Mandovi estuary from June 2007 to May 2008 in relation to salinity and nutrients. A total of 209 species belonging to 7 divisions were identified during the study period. The highest phytoplankton cell density (5.17 × 10^4 cells L^{-1}) and biomass (7.68 mg m^{-3} chlorophyll a) were observed in the upper sections during the nonmonsoon period, while the highest diversity (3.46) was observed in the upper section during the monsoon period. Herniaria caucasica Rupr., Rumex cyprius Murb., and Potentilla multifida L. are given as new records for Turkey. The specimens were collected from Van, Mersin, and Kayseri provinces. These new records were compared with similar species in Turkey. Descriptions, distributions, and figures of these new records are given.

Ellenberg developed a system that assigns indicator scores for habitat characteristics of individual plant species. Swamp forests are highly diverse ecological communities and include different plant species, all of which have different ecological requirements. Ellenberg's indicator values (EIVs) were calculated for soil pH and nitrogen (N) concentration in some swamp forest species in the Central Black Sea region of Turkey. In this study, the EIVs for soil pH were usually similar in the swamp forest species studied, while some differences were found with respect to EIVs for soil nitrogen concentration. To investigate the effect of exogenous application of triacontanol (TRIA) on 2 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (S-24 and MH-97) under salt stress, an experiment was conducted in a greenhouse under natural climatic conditions. Both cultivars were grown in full strength Hoagland's nutrient solution under nonsaline (0 mM NaCl) or saline (150 mM NaCl) conditions in sand culture. Three optimized TRIA levels (0, 10, and 20 µM) were used as foliar spray at 3 growth stages, i.e. vegetative, boot, and vegetative + boot stages. A new natural hybrid between Prosthechea cochleata and P. radiata (Orchidaceae, Laeliinae) from the central part of Guatemala, P. × chixoyensis Mó & Cetzal, is herein described, illustrated, and characterized based on the morphological characters. The new nothospecies is most similar to P. cochleata but the petals are proportionally broader and the mucro of the labellum is subapical, as observed in P. radiata. Additionally, the perianth segments are neither as strongly reflexed as they are in P. cochleata nor patent as in P. radiata. Tamarix L. accessions were collected from Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, covering an area of about 60 km located in the southeast of Iran. The present investigation was performed to study the genetic structure of Tamarix populations in this province and present some information about gene flow among these populations. Forty-two tree specimens were randomly collected and studied for molecular and morphological diversity. Taxonomic relationships in Avena genus are not evident. Avena sativa L. might have originated either from Avena sterilis L. or Avena fatua L. Alternatively, it may have evolved independently during formation of the hexaploid form. A. fatua may have a different A genome than the other hexaploids. Studies performed with Ty1-copia retrotransposon probes demonstrated that this retrotransposon is present at low copy number in the C genome, while it is abundant in A, B, and D. Barbarea integrifolia DC. (Brassicaceae) is an endangered and endemic species located in Erzincan and Gümüşhane provinces of Turkey. In total, 27 individuals from 2 natural populations were assessed using the random amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) method coupled with sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) rDNA region. Genetic accuracy of RAPD-PCR was tested with 25 RAPD primers, and it resulted in 115 clear and reproducible DNA fragments from 13 RAPD primers. A new species, Bucklandiella seppeltii Bednarek-Ochyra, Ochyra, Sawicki & Szczecinska, is delimited by its distinct morphology and biogeography. The geographical range of the new species is restricted to the southern-temperate and southern-cool-temperate zones of Tasmania and New Zealand, with maximum occurrence on the South Island of the latter insular country. The species is described and illustrated and its distribution is mapped. The systematic position of B. seppeltii is revealed to be a sister to New Zealand B. allanfifei Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra by molecular evidence based on parsimony analysis of nuclear sequences. Four taxa of Algerian Astragalus L. were studied for their chromosome number, karyotype features, and genome size. Fluorochrome banding was done for detection of GC-rich DNA regions, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for physical mapping of 35S and 5S rRNA genes, and flow cytometry for nuclear DNA content. All the taxa present the same chromosome number (2n = 2x = 16) and single 35S and 5S rDNA loci, but their distributions on chromosomes are different. A taxonomic reassessment of the Tanacetum aureum (Lam.) Greuter, M.V.Agab. & Wagenitz (Asteraceae, Anthemideae) species group was performed. This group of species is distinguished by herbaceous perennial habit, (1-)2-10(-80) disciform capitula, with compact to lax corymbs and strongly to moderately convex receptacle. A multivariate statistical analysis of 58 morphological characters using Ward cluster, principal component analyses, and molecular phylogenetic analyses of nrDNA ITS and cpDNA rpL32-trnL^{(UAG)} + ndhF-rpL32 spacer sequence datasets were conducted. To assess the genetic diversity and relationships among commercial Gossypium species released in Turkey between 1964 and 2014, 96 cotton varieties were analyzed using morphological and molecular markers. Morphological analysis was performed based on 4 fiber quality traits including fiber length, strength, fineness, and uniformity, and the mean values of each trait for each genotype were calculated using 2-year data. The results showed that most of the genotypes have long fiber length, very high fiber strength, coarse (45 genotypes) or average (50 genotypes) fiber fineness, and high uniformity. Glyphosate-resistant giant ragweed is one of the most competitive weeds of agronomic crops in the United States. Early emergence and rapid growth rate makes giant ragweed a competitive weed early in the season and reduces crop yields. Therefore, early spring control of giant ragweed using a preplant herbicide is critical. Glufosinate is an alternative POST herbicide for weed control in glufosinate-resistant soybean. The Anatolian black pine [Pinus nigra Arnold subsp. pallasiana (Lamb.) Holmboe var. pallasiana] is one of the subspecies of European black pine, growing naturally as a widespread mid-elevation species in the southern, western, and northern Anatolian Mountains of Turkey. Three well-recognized varieties [var. pallasiana, var. fastigiata Businsky with pyramidal form, and var. seneriana (Saatçioğlu) Yalt. with globular-shaped crown with multiple stems] occur naturally, but the studies on them are very limited. Allium Efeae (Amaryllidaceae), A New Species From Northwest Anatolia, Turkey, İlker Genç, Fatma Neri̇man Özhatay

Allium efeae Özhatay & İ.Genç is described as a new species from northwest Anatolia. The distribution area of this species is restricted to Kıbrıscık (Bolu) and Beypazarı (Ankara). It resembles Allium lycaonicum Siehe, but differs in tepal shape and color, leaf length, and filament shape. A table comparing the diagnostic morphological characters of the new species and A. lycaonicum is provided. The diagnostic morphological characters, distribution, conservation status, and color photographs of the new species as well as its chromosome number (2n = 24) are presented.

A Revision Of Centaurea Sect. Centaurea (Asteraceae) From Iran, Massoud Ranjbar, Kazem Negaresh

A taxonomic review of Centaurea L. sect. Centaurea (Asteraceae) in Iran was carried out. Seven taxa are recognized and 1 of them is described as a new species: Centaurea joharchii Ranjbar & Negaresh. This new species has been described and illustrated from Khorasan Province, SE Iran. A new combination is proposed: C. kermanshahensis (Wagenitz) Ranjbar & Negaresh. In addition, C. aggregata Fisch. & C.A.Mey. ex DC. subsp. aggregata is typified and C. diffusa Lam. is reported here as a new record for Iran. Finally, a key to all species of the section Centaurea in Iran is provided.

Recent phylogenetic analyses proved several infrageneric units within the genus Crocus to be para- or polyphyletic. In an attempt to arrive at a system of Crocus that closely reflects species relationships, we provide here phylogenetic, morphometric, geographic, and nomenclatorial data for the species of a narrower-defined, monophyletic Crocus series Reticulati. We sequenced the ETS and ITS regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA in 9 Reticulati and 19 outgroup species. Three chloroplast loci (trnL-F, rps16-trnQ, matK-trnK) were sequenced in the newly defined series Reticulati species and 1 outgroup. Data were analyzed with Bayesian and parsimony algorithms. Salt stress can trigger several physiological responses in plants such as increased accumulation of ABA and antioxidant enzyme activities, which have been closely associated with the tolerance of plants to salt stress. In the present study a novel zeaxanthin epoxidase gene, designated EsABA1, was isolated from Eutrema salsugineum. EsABA1 contained a full-length open reading frame (ORF) of 2001 bp, encoding 666 amino acids. Transcription of EsABA1 rapidly accumulated after exposure to various abiotic stresses, suggesting that the EsABA1 gene was involved in multiple stress responses and tolerance. Background: Association analysis is an alternative to conventional family-based methods to detect the location of gene(s) or quantitative trait loci (QTL) and provides relatively high resolution in terms of defining the genome position of a gene or QTL. Potential consequences of climate change on crop production can be studied using mechanistic crop simulation models. While a broad variety of maize simulation models exist, it is not known whether different models diverge on grain yield responses to changes in climatic factors, or whether they agree in their general trends related to phenology, growth, and yield. With the goal of analyzing the sensitivity of simulated yields to changes in temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2], we present the largest maize crop model intercomparison to date, including 23 different models. For the past 4 years, the University of Nebraska strawberry team has worked to develop low cost, sustainable methods for farmers and growers to produce strawberries in a double polyethylene greenhouse during the winter. This past year, this growing system was adapted to become a commercial grower’s heated high tunnel for the winter/spring of 2013-14. The idea was to scale up to a farm-size demonstration and compare it to the university greenhouse production system with a goal to expand marketing opportunities for strawberries into the winter season.

Switchgrass flag leaves can be expected to be a source of carbon to the plant, and its senescence is likely to impact the remobilization of nutrients from the shoots to the rhizomes. However, many genes have not been assigned a function in specific stages of leaf development. Here, we characterized gene expression in flag leaves over their development. By merging changes in leaf chlorophyll and the expression of genes for chlorophyll biosynthesis and degradation, a four-phase molecular roadmap for switchgrass flag leaf ontogeny was developed. Human pathogens can internalize food crops through root and surface uptake and persist inside crop plants. The goal of the study was to elucidate the global modulation of bacteria and plant protein expression after Salmonella internalizes lettuce. A quantitative proteomic approach was used to analyse the protein expression of Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis and lettuce cultivar Green Salad Bowl 24 h after infiltrating S. Infantis into lettuce leaves. Among the 50 differentially expressed proteins identified by comparing internalized S. Infantis against S. Soybean cyst nematode caused by Heterodera glycines Ichinohe is the most devastating pest in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Resistance to SCN is complex, polygenic, race and cultivar specific, and it is controlled by several quantitative trait loci (QTL). Our objective was to identify and map QTL for SCN resistance to races 3 (HG Type 0) and 5 (HG Type 2.5.7) using a high density SNP-based genetic linkage map based on the PI438489B by ‘Hamilton’ (PIxH, n=50) recombinant inbred line population. Phytophthora root rot (PRR) is a devastating disease in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production. Michigan elite soybean E00003 is resistant to Phytophthora sojae and has been used as a resistance source in breeding. Genetic control of PRR resistance in this source is unknown. To facilitate marker-assisted selection (MAS), the PRR resistance loci in E00003 and their map locations need to be determined. In this study, a genetic mapping approach was used to identify major PRR -resistant loci in E00003.
