• Competing evolutionary forces shape plant breeding systems (e.g. inbreeding depression, reproductive assurance). Which of these forces prevails in a given population or species is predicted to depend upon such factors as life history, eco- logical conditions, and geographical context. Here, we examined two such predictions: that self-compatibility should be associated with the annual life history or extreme climatic conditions.

• We analyzed data from a clade of plants remarkable for variation in breeding system, life history and climatic conditions (Oenothera, sections Anogra and Kleinia, Onagraceae). We used a phylogenetic comparative approach and Bayesian or hybrid Bayesian tests to account …

Identification Of A Second Asian Soybean Rust Resistance Gene In Hyuuga Soybean, Mandy D. Kendrick, Donna K. Harris, Bo-Keun Ha, D. L. Hyten, P. B. Cregan, Reid D. Frederick, H. Roger Boerma, Kerry F. Pedley

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Asian soybean rust (ASR) is an economically significant disease caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi. The soybean genes Rpp3 and Rpp?(Hyuuga) confer resistance to specific isolates of the pathogen. Both genes map to chromosome 6 (Gm06) (linkage group [LG] C2). We recently identified 12 additional soybean accessions that harbor ASR resistance mapping to Gm06, within 5 centimorgans of Rpp3 and Rpp?(Hyuuga). To further characterize genotypes with resistance on Gm06, we used a set of eight P. pachyrhizi isolates collected from geographically diverse areas to inoculate plants and evaluate them for differential phenotypic responses. …

Mutational Analysis Of The Major Soybean Uref Paralogue Involved In Urease Activation, Joe C. Polacco, D. L. Hyten, Mônica Medeiros-Silva, David A. Sleper, Kristin D. Bilyeu Jan 2011

Mutational Analysis Of The Major Soybean Uref Paralogue Involved In Urease Activation, Joe C. Polacco, D. L. Hyten, Mônica Medeiros-Silva, David A. Sleper, Kristin D. Bilyeu

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The soybean genome duplicated ~14 and 45 million years ago and has many paralogous genes, including those in urease activation (emplacement of Ni and CO2 in the active site). Activation requires the UreD and UreF proteins, each encoded by two paralogues. UreG, a third essential activation protein, is encoded by the single-copy Eu3, and eu3 mutants lack activity of both urease isozymes. eu2 has the same urease-negative phenotype, consistent with Eu2 being a single-copy gene, possibly encoding a Ni carrier. Unexpectedly, two eu2 alleles co-segregated with missense mutations in the chromosome 2 UreF paralogue (Ch02UreF), suggesting …

Cytokinin-Mediated Source ⁄Sink Modifications Improve Drought Tolerance And Increase Grain Yield In Rice Under Water-Stress, Zvi Peleg, Maria Reguera, Ellen Tumimbang, Harkamal Walia, Eduardo Blumwald

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Drought is the major environmental factor limiting crop productivity worldwide. We hypothesized that it is possible to enhance drought tolerance by delaying stress-induced senescence through the stress-induced synthesis of cytokinins in crop-plants. We generated transgenic rice (Oryza sativa) plants expressing an isopentenyltransferase (IPT) gene driven by PSARK, a stress- and maturation-induced promoter. Plants were tested for drought tolerance at two yield-sensitive developmental stages: pre- and post-anthesis. Under both treatments, the transgenic rice plants exhibited delayed response to stress with significantly higher grain yield (GY) when compared to wild-type plants. Gene expression analysis revealed a significant shift in expression of hormone-associated …

Auxin Regulation Of Arabidopsis Flower Development Involves Members Of The Aintegumenta-Like/Plethora (Ail/Plt) Family, Beth A. Krizek Jan 2011

Auxin Regulation Of Arabidopsis Flower Development Involves Members Of The Aintegumenta-Like/Plethora (Ail/Plt) Family, Beth A. Krizek

Faculty Publications

Auxin is an important regulator of many aspects of plant growth and development. During reproductive development, auxin specifies the site of flower initiation and subsequently regulates organ growth and patterning as well as later events that determine reproductive success. Underlying auxin action in plant tissues is its uneven distribution, resulting in groups of cells with high auxin levels (auxin maxima) or graded distributions of the hormone (auxin gradients). Dynamic auxin distribution within the periphery of the inflorescence meristems specifies the site of floral meristem initiation, while auxin maxima present at the tips of developing floral organ primordia probably mediate organ …

Deer Browse Monitoring Of The Lupine Population At John Merle Coulter Prairie And The Trillium Population At Hildebrand Lake, Jana C. Cram, Heather Dulaney

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

A facet of ecological restoration practices in northwest Indiana involves monitoring and supporting the growth of various plants native to the region, including wild lupine (Lupinus perennis) and large-flowering trillium (Trillium grandiflorum). White-tailed deer are a common threat to these species because they eat, or browse, the flowers from these plants. This project investigated the amount of wild lupine and large-flowering trillium browsed by white-tailed deer at Coulter Prairie and Hildebrand Lake, respectively, over a four-year period. Plant counts are taken from permanent transect lines of 30 and 50 meters in length and measured in one …

Improving Ecological Monitoring Of Restoration Sites In Northwest Indiana Through A Glisten-Nirmi Partnership., Danyi Harper, Don Meola

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Northwest Indiana is an area of active ecological restoration with 169 documented restoration projects. However, the ability to assess the success of restoration projects is incomplete because monitoring of the progress of these restorations does not exist. NIRMI was created in 2010 to establish a system of evaluating and quantifying plant species in local habitat restoration projects throughout Northwest Indiana. NIRMI uses a standardized approach to collect data that is placed within an open-access database for use by other researchers, restoration groups, and individuals in evaluation of restoration efforts. Data collection uses the CVS-EEP protocol for recording vegetation, a standard …

Mapping And Analysing The Diversity Of The Genus Acantholimon Taxa In Turkey By Geographic Information Systems (Gis), Hakan Mete Doğan, Musa Doğan, Gali̇p Akaydin, Ferhat Celep

Turkish Journal of Botany

We describe the spatial distribution of the genus Acantholimon Boiss. (Plumbaginaceae) taxa in Turkey, and assess the role that environmental variables may be playing on this distribution. We collected a large number of specimens from 418 geo-referenced sampling sites between 2000 and 2004, and established a point database using geographic information systems (GIS) software. As a result, we identified and mapped 67 taxa; 43 of the determined taxa appear to be endemic. We re-evaluated the current conservation status of the taxa at a national level using recent IUCN Red List categories. In addition, we extracted the corresponding environmental variables of …

Fruit And Seed Morphology Of The Fumaria L. Species (Papaveraceae) Of Iran, Fatemeh Ebrahimzadeh Araii, Maryam Keshavarzi, Masoud Sheidaii, Parinaz Ghadam

Turkish Journal of Botany

The macro and micro fruit and seed morphology and surface ornamentations of 21 populations of 6 Fumaria L. species were investigated using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. These data are shown to support data from the general morphology. The results indicate that the fruit and seed characters of the genus Fumaria are valuable for taxonomic applications and are useful for classification. F. officinalis show a different shape in their fruit. The close relationships are observed for F. parviflora and F. vaillantii. F. indica, as a hybrid between F. asepala and F. parviflora, shows intermediate micro-morphological features.

Strategies For Conserving Forest Genetic Resources In The Face Of Climate Change, John Bradley St.Clair, Glenn Thomas Howe Jan 2011

Strategies For Conserving Forest Genetic Resources In The Face Of Climate Change, John Bradley St.Clair, Glenn Thomas Howe

Turkish Journal of Botany

Conservation of genetic diversity is important for continued evolution of populations to new environments, as well as continued availability of traits of interest in genetic improvement programs. Rapidly changing climates present new threats to the conservation of forest genetic resources. We can no longer assume that in situ reserves will continue to preserve existing genetic diversity. Management of reserves should become more active. In some reserves, existing genetic diversity should be preserved by creating stands that are more resistant to threats using silvicultural treatments such as thinning and prescribed burning. In other reserves, natural selection and adaptation to changed environments …

Seed Morphology And Anatomy Of The Mediterranean Pentamerous Species Of Erica (Ericaceae), Jaime Fagundez, Jesus Izco

Turkish Journal of Botany

The species of the "Pentapera group" are distinguished from the rest of the European and Mediterranean Erica L. species by having 5 corolla lobes and sepals instead of 4, and 10 stamens instead of 8. The genus Pentapera Klotzsch was proposed for these taxa but recent studies regards it as part of Erica. Two species are recognised: Erica sicula Guss. and E. bocquetii (Peşmen) P.F.Stevens, and 3 subspecies have been described within E. sicula. This taxonomic treatment is still under discussion and relationships with other species have been poorly discussed. Seed morphology of the 2 species and the 3 subspecies …

Comparison Of Growing Media For Container Grown Plants, Paul Harris, David Longer, Derrick Oosterhuis, Dimitra Loka

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Greenhouse and growth chamber experiments are conducted worldwide in efforts to produce solutions that would increase yields of agronomic crops. However, the results of those experiments vary due to the many growth media being used. An experiment was conducted in the fall of 2010 to identify a broadly acceptable growth media that would produce uniform stands and optimum results in greenhouse and growth chamber settings. A total of six growth media were tested on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) at the Arkansas Agricutural Research and Extension Center’s Altheimer Lab in Fayetteville. The plants grown in each medium were harvested six weeks after …
