New Records For The Freshwater Algae Of Turkey, Tülay Baykal, Aydin Akbulut, İlkay Açikgöz, Abel U. Udoh, Kazim Yildiz, Bülent Şen

Turkish Journal of Botany

Algae samples were collected from important dam lakes and running waters of the Lower Euphrates Basin. Eighteen new records of Turkish freshwater algae were identified. Among these new records, 5 belong to Cyanophyta, 10 to Chlorophyta, 1 to Xanthophyta, and 2 to Bacillariophyta.

Knowledge of physical and chemical properties of soil is relevant for landowners, researchers, and foresters, so that appropriate crop species and management practices to maximize site productivity can be selected. In addition to issues of plant productivity, the need for assessing soil properties has been expanded due to public interest in determining the consequences of management practices on soil quality relative to sustainability of crop ecosystem functions. The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) delineated soil mapping units to provide information about physical and chemical properties of soil in each soil series. This report presents results from soil-landscape mapping at a scale of 1: 100,000 in the Tambellup- Borden area of Western Australia. It is accompanied by a soil-landscape map covering almost 511,000 hectares.

Most of the survey occurs within the upper Frankland-Gordon, Kent, North Stirlings Basin and upper reaches of the Pallinup and Kalgan River catchments. The survey falls within the Katanning and Albany Department of Agriculture and Food advisory districts.

Premise: Bromeliaceae form a large, ecologically diverse family of angiosperms native to the New World. We use a bromeliad phylogeny based on eight plastid regions to analyze relationships within the family, test a new, eight-subfamily classification, infer the chronology of bromeliad evolution and invasion of different regions, and provide the basis for future analyses of trait evolution and rates of diversification.

Methods: We employed maximum-parsimony, maximum-likelihood, and Bayesian approaches to analyze 9341 aligned bases for four outgroups and 90 bromeliad species representing 46 of 58 described genera. We calibrate the resulting phylogeny against time using penalized likelihood applied …

Congruence Of Rapd And Issr Markers For Evaluation Of Genomic Relationship Among 28 Populations Of Podophyllum Hexandrum Royle From Himachal Pradesh, India, Md. Afroz Alam, Pradeep Kumar Naik, Gyan Prakash Mishra

Twenty eight populations of Podophyllum hexandrum Royle were selected to study genetic relationship using RAPD and ISSR markers from north-western Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh, India. Nineteen RAPD primers and 11 ISSR primers amplified a total of 131 and 68 scorable bands, of which 92.37% and 83.82%, respectively, were polymorphic. The mean coefficient of gene differentiation (Gst) was 0.6933 and 0.6296, indicating that Nei´s gene diversity of 33.77% and 29.44% reside in all the populations. Estimated value of gene flow for RAPD (Nm = 0.11059), for ISSR (Nm = 0.1470) individually, and the combination of RAPD+ISSR (Nm = 0.1211) markers indicated that …

Benthic Algae (Except Bacillariophyta) And Their Seasonal Variations In Karagöl Lake (Borçka, Artvin-Turkey), Saadet Kolayli, Bülent Şahi̇n

Seasonal variation in the species composition of the benthic algae of Karagöl Lake was investigated from April to October in 2001 and 2002. The benthic algal flora consisted of 38 taxa belonging to the divisions Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Euglenophyta, and Chrysophyta. In general, Chlorophyta were dominant in terms of species number and abundance during the study period. The distribution range of the benthic algae composition and dominant species differed from each other at all stations. Benthic algal growth was mostly influenced by water temperature and light.

Some new records of Inocybe (Fr.) Fr. based on samples collected from Osmaniye, Kilis, and Isparta provinces are presented. Inocybe flocculosa var. crocifolia (Herink) Kuyper, I. ochroalba Bruyl., I. pallida Velen., I. splendens var. splendens R. Heim, I. substellata Kühner, and I. vaccina Kühner were determined to be new records from Turkey.

Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) is one of the largest genera in Turkey. The chromosome number and morphology of 8 taxa belonging to the genus Centaurea were investigated using an image analysis system. The Rediscovery Of Some Taxa Thought To Have Been Extinct In Turkey, Ali̇ Kandemi̇r

This paper reports the re-discovery of Barbarea auriculata Hausskn. ex Bornm. var. auriculata (Brassicaceae), Onobrychis nitida Boiss. (Fabaceae), Onosma discedens Hausskn. ex Bornm. (Boraginaceae), and Silene oligotricha Hub.-Mor. (Caryophyllaceae). All of these taxa had been listed as Extinct (EX), according to the World Conservation Union Red List Categories. This study provides the re-descriptions of these taxa, presents field observations of these taxa, and suggests new IUCN categories.

Cyclamen trochopteranthum O.Schwarz has a confusing history, having been identified in the last part of the 19^{th} century and described as Cyclamen alpinum Sprenger. It remained known as C. alpinum until 1975, when it was described as C. trochopteranthum by Otto Schwarz. Cyclamen trochopteranthum is a species distributed in the south-western part of Turkey, but the C. trochopteranthum described in 1975 is today describe again as Cyclamen alpinum. The semidesert taxon Halothamnus (Chenopodiaceae), which is confirmed to supersede the later Aellenia, is represented in Turkey by H. glaucus subsp. glaucus and H. hierochunticus. The former was known to occur in Kars and Ağri provinces but was found recently in Kayseri province as well. The latter is a new record for the flora of Turkey from Şanlıurfa province close to the Syrian border. Full descriptions of the genus and the species occurring in Turkey are given and the case of Aellenia is discussed. Images and distributional data including maps are provided.

The authors investigated the influence of periphyton that abundantly overgrow stalks of reeds (reed-periphyton) submerged in water [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Stewdel], especially the old ones, on the occurrence of mycoflora species in different trophic seasons in the water of 4 trophically different water bodies. The seeds and snake exuviae were used as bait. In the spring, diatoms were the predominant group of algae forming the periphyton on old reed stalks, green algae predominated in the summer, and cyanobacteria in the autumn. Nine species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from various provinces of Turkey. Five species of these (Endococcus janae, Lichenochora aprica, Pronectria xanthoriae, Sarcopyrenia cylindrospora, and Zwackhiomyces cervinae) are reported for the first time from Turkey. All these taxa, except Zwackhiomyces cervinae, are also new to Asia. Comments on their habitats and substrata and a short diagnosis are provided for each new taxon new to Turkey.

The effect of plant growth regulators (PGRs) and carbohydrate sources on callus induction, callus growth, and plant regeneration in foxglove was examined. Explants were transferred onto MS medium with various levels of PGRs and carbohydrates to determine the optimum explant and effective combinations of PGR treatment. For callus induction 6.0 mg L^{-1} of \alpha-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 3.0 mg L^{-1} of benzyl-aminopurine (BA) were very responsive. Addition of cytokinins (BA and kinetin) at 0.5-3.0 mg L^{-1} to media containing NAA enhanced callus growth. Shoot regeneration was best achieved in MS + 6.0 mg L^{-1} of BA. The diversity and host specificity of endophytic and Rhizoctonia-like fungi were investigated in orchids from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Endophytic fungi from various Aegean and Mediterranean orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis (L.) L.C.M.Richard, Orchis sancta L., Ophrys fusca Link., and Serapias vomeracea subsp. orientalis Greuter) were isolated and identified partially. Surface sterilisation of roots and tubers was carried out in laminar airflow under aseptic conditions. Several modified methods for the isolation of symbiotic fungi from orchid roots and tubers were used. Cosmarium botrytis Menegh. ex Ralfs var. tumidum Wolle, Cosmarium notabile Bréb. var. transiens Insam et Krieger, Cosmarium tetragonum (Näg.) Arch. in Pritchard var. tetragonum, and Cosmarium vogesiacum Lemaire var. alpinum (Schmidle) Laporte are recorded for the first time for the desmid flora of Turkey. The desmids are recorded from Yedigöller Lakes in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey.

Phellinus sulphurascens Pilát was collected from juniper tree stumps (Juniperus excelsa and J. foetidissima) in two different localities situated in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. This very rare species is known in Europe only from the Ural Mountains in Russia. This fungus is an aggressive root rot pathogen associated with Douglas fir and other conifers in North America. This is the first report on juniper as a new host outside of its known distribution area.

Few resistance loci to soybean rust (SBR), caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd., have been genetically mapped and linked to molecular markers that can be used for marker assisted selection. New technologies are available for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping that can be used to rapidly map traits controlled by single loci such as resistance to SBR. Soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi (H. Sydow & Sydow), is a destructive soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] disease and identification of new resistance genes is essential for effective rust management. Our research objectives were to map and confirm the location of resistance gene(s) in PI 594538A using a population of 98 F3:4 lines from across between PI 594538A (reddish-brown [RB] lesions) and the susceptible cultivar Loda (tan [TAN] lesions). The lines were inoculated with the P. pachyrhizi isolate ZM01-1 from Zimbabwe. The RB resistance in PI 594538A mapped on linkage group G as a single dominant gene. …

Background: A large number of genetic variations have been identified in rice. Such variations must in many cases control phenotypic differences in abiotic stress tolerance and other traits. A single feature polymorphism (SFP) is an oligonucleotide array-based polymorphism which can be used for identification of SNPs or insertion/deletions (INDELs) for high throughput genotyping and high density mapping. It is hypothesized that global warming is at least partially due to increased greenhouse gases, one of which is carbon dioxide. An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide has been shown to stimulate higher rates of plant productivity, including the production of plant toxins like urushiol. Urushiol, a secondary plant compound produced in members of the Anacardiaceae family, causes dermatitis in sensitive individuals. An increase in urushiol production could increase the reactivity of certain individuals to plants like poison oak and poison ivy. The tests provide information to companies developing cultivars and/or marketing seed within the state, and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for soybean producers

Floral Biology Of Aconitum Heterophyllum Wall.: A Critically Endangered Alpine Medicinal Plant Of Himalaya, India, Bhagwati P. Nautiyal, Mohan C. Nautiyal, Vinod P. Khanduri, Neelum Rawat

Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. is a critically endangered wild medicinal herb of alpine Himalaya and cultivation is recommended owing to its large demand in the herbal market and to ensure the conservation of wild habitats. Therefore, observations on floral biology, pollen germination, pollination, and fruit and seed setting after implying different breeding systems were carried out for its successful domestication and improvement in cultivation practices. The study reveals that the plants grown in hothouse conditions showed considerable variation in the production of flowers and seeds.
