ABSTRACT This long term study focuses on testing various hazelnut cultivars for yield, nut quality and disease resistance. There are various cultivars that are being tested for these desired traits but only the Grand Traverse and Skinner will be applicable for the results of this localized study. The desired traits of commercial nut production are best matched by these two cultivars. Results from previous harvests will be used to draw trends to recommend commercially functional cultivars in Eastern Nebraska.

Rice is a member of the genus Oryza, which has a history extending back into the Miocene. Oryza is in turn a member of the tribe Oryzeae, which along with the tribe Ehrharteae is included in the subfamily Ehrhartoideae. This paper reviews current knowledge of the genus, tribe and subfamily, and places rice in the larger evolutionary context of the entire grass family. The morphological characteristics of rice are an amalgam of characters that have originated at different times in its long evolutionary history. Biological invasions pose a serious threat to biodiversity, but monitoring for invasive species is time consuming and costly. Understanding where species have the potential to invade enables land managers to focus monitoring efforts. In this paper, we compared two simple types of models to predict the potential distributions of three non-native invasive plants (Geranium robertianum, Hedera spp., and Ilex aquifolium) in the contiguous USA. We developed models based on the climatic requirements of the species as reported in the literature (literature-based) and simple climate envelope models based on the climate where the species already occur (observation-based). Plant colonization can be limited by lack of seeds or by factors that reduce establishment. The role of seed limitation in community assembly is being increasingly recognized, but in early primary succession, establishment failure is still considered more important. We studied the factors limiting colonization on the foreland of Coleman Glacier, Washington, USA to determine the importance of seed and establishment limitation during primary succession. We also evaluated the effects of seed predation, drought and existing vegetation on establishment. A native of North America, switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a hardy rhizomatous perennial with an expansive range. The U.S. Department of Energy has identified switchgrass as a promising biofuel crop for low-input agriculture and marginal lands (Fig. 1). This has prompted research on improvement through genetic modification (GM). Before any new GM crop can be released, regulators must evaluate not only the modified plants, but also potential negative impacts to the environment. Lolium perenne ssp. multiflorum (Italian ryegrass) resistant to ACCase inhibiting herbicides has been reported in many wheat producing counties across Arkansas. Resistance is believed to be the result of point mutations creating amino acid substitutions in the CT domain of the plastidic ACCase gene. This study explores the occurrence of mutations in the ACCase gene of ryegrass populations. Plant material was collected and DNA was extracted from 10 Arkansas ryegrass populations. Six of the populations were known to be resistant to the ACCase inhibitor diclofop-methyl, while the remaining four populations were known to be susceptible to diclofop-methyl. Public and private interest in global warming has prompted exploration of the impacts this phenomenon may impart on ecosystem functions. Flowering phenology has been one of the areas many scientists believe is particularly susceptible to the impacts of anthropogenic warming. Over three weekends in spring of 2008, the vernal herb community was surveyed at five sites within the Great Smoky Mountains regions of the southern Appalachian Mountains. The intent was to capture the naturally occurring elevational gradient and determine if the temperature cue for blooming was the same for all co-flowering species in the study. The Prairie Naturalist

Since 1979, North Dakota's bird records committee has collected, evaluated, and archived documentations of rare bird occurrences in the state. In 2004 and 2005, this committee resolved 189 rare bird records. On the basis of these record reviews, six species were ad~ed to the North Dakota state bird list: mottled duck (Anas fulvigula), yellow-billed loon (Cavia adamsii), white-tailed kite (Elanus leucurus), little stint (Calidris minuta), glaucous-winged gull (Larus glaucescens), and great black-backed gull (Larus marinus). The objectives of my study were to detennine the effects of drought (e.g., Palmer Modified Drought Severity Index; PMDI, Bridges et at. 2001) and/or agricultural practices (e.g., conversion) on RNP abundance in the Nebraska Panhandle (NP).

My RNP survey data were found to be correlated negatively to drought condition (PMDI) in January, February, and April. This was supported by Snyder (1984) and Riley (1995), both of whom reported that decreased precipitation in spring affected RNP production in the western Great Plains and Iowa, respectively. These guidelines present The Prairie Naturalist (PNAT) policies and procedures for submitting scientific manuscripts for consideration for publication. In January 2009, a change in Editorial staff occurred and these guidelines address the ongoing transition and update the online "Suggestions for Contributors" guidelines provided on the PNAT website (http://www.fhsu.edu/biology/pn/prairienat.htm); these instructions supersede all previous guidelines. Tables and appendices are included for common word expressions with superfluous wording, examples of correct format and style guidelines for tables accompanying manuscripts, guidance in properly preparing Research Articles and Notes, citing literature, and mandatory abbreviations for tables, figures and parenthetical expressions.

Developmental Stages Of Ovule And Megagametophyte In Chenopodium Botrys L. (Chenopodiaceae), Abdolkarim Chehregani, Behrouz Malayeri, Nafiseh Yousefi

The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis stages in Chenopodium botrys L. were studied with light microscopy. Flowers and young pods were removed from natural plants and fixed in FAA 70, stored in 70% ethanol, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned at 7 µm with a microtome. Staining was carried out with Hematoxylin and Eosin and developmental stages of ovule were studied. The results of this research showed that ovule development, including megasporogenesis and initial stages of megagametogenesis, occurred while flowers were still in bud. Skunk cabbage is a coarse herbaceous plant. The stem consists of a stout rhizome oriented vertically in the soil. Leaves and flowers arise from the tip of the rhizome which is often not visible, resulting in the appearance of leaves and flowers arising directly from the swampy mires where these plants grow. Flowers appear during the winter, long before the leaves. The flowers are minute, clustered into a ball-like group (spadix) almost entirely enclosed by a fleshy, hood-like, spathe. Numerous protocols are available for the isolation of plant genomic DNA. Often times, these protocols utilize a wide variety of solutions. The primary purpose of this project was to examine the use of LiCl for the removal of RNA contaminants within genomic DNA samples and its dependency on incubation time and temperature. Our results indicate that LiCl is sufficient for the removal of high molecular weight RNA contaminants from genomic DNA. In addition, our results illustrate varying incubation times with LiCl yield minimal differences in the recovery of genomic DNA and the removal of RNA contaminants. Ornithogalum nurdaniae Y.Bağcı & Savran sp. nov. (Liliaceae), a new species related to O. oligophyllum E.D.Clarke, is described and illustrated from Uludağ (the Bithynian Olympus), a mountain in NW Anatolia well known for its rich flora and many local endemics (A2 Bursa province). Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Notes are also presented on the ecology, biogeography, and conservation status of the new species.

Aegilops juvenalis (Thell.) Eig (Poaceae) is recorded and vouchered for the first time from Turkey. This first vouchered wild record is confined to Ceylanpınar province in C8 Şanlıurfa. The diagnostic morphological characters discriminating it from of Aegilops crassa Boiss. are pointed out. Notes are presented on its ecology and phenology. A distribution map of this species is also given.

Lichens And Lichenicolous Fungi Of Kızıldağ (Derebucak, Konya), Mustafa Kocakaya, Mehmet Gökhan Halici, Ahmet Aksoy

Herein 152 taxa of lichens and lichenicolous fungi belonging to 68 genera are reported from Kızıldağ (Derebucak district, Konya province). Of these, 149 taxa are reported from the study area for the first time and 96 taxa are new for Konya province. Lecanora perpruinosa Fröberg and Toninia submexicana de Lesd. are new records for Turkey and Asia.

Three hundred and two lichenised fungi taxa belonging to 90 genera and 45 lichenicolous fungi taxa belonging to 24 genera are reported from Aladağlar National Park. Of these, 290 lichenised fungi taxa and 21 lichenicolous fungi taxa are reported for the first time from Aladağlar National Park. Nine species of lichenised fungi, namely Arthopyrenia fraxini A.Massal., Aspicilia obscurata (Fr.) Arnold, Cephalophysis leucospila (Anzi) H.Kilias & Scheid., Chaenotheca ferruginea (Turner ex Sm.) Mig., Collema texanum var. texanum Tuck., Leconora usbekica Poelt, Placidium boccanum (Servít) Breuss, Sarcogyne distinguenda Th.Fr., and Verrucaria latericola Erichsen, are new to Turkey. Nuclear And Non-Nuclear Interactions In F_1 Hybrid Populations Of Three Solanum Species In The Subgenus Leptostemonum,Section Melongena (Solanaceae), Olatunji A. Oyelana, K. Olusola Ogunwenmo

Reciprocal crosses involving Solanum gilo Raddi, S. anguivi Lam. and S. macrocarpon L., subg. Leptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter sect. Melongena Dunal were produced in order to assess inherent nuclear and non-nuclear influences on hybrid fitness, the extent of genomic change, and species compatibility. Hybrids expressed intermediacy and overlaps in leaf, petiole, petal, and plant height dimensions. Maternal influence was dominant in growth habit, leaf shape and texture, flower colour, and fruit size, while paternal control was limited to fruit colour in Solanum gilo × S. macrocarpon. Pollen viability was reduced from 97.3%-86.5% in parents to 53.8%-20.5% in hybrids. S. gilo × …

Astragalus barrii Barneby (Barr’s milkvetch) is ranked globally vulnerable (G3) by NatureServe and critically imperiled (S1) by the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program. A. barrii is designated a sensitive species by the USDA Forest Service (USFS) Region 2 (R2). The Oglala National Grassland (ONG), located in northwestern Nebraska in Dawes and Sioux County, is within the USFS R2 jurisdiction. The purpose of this survey was to: (1) search for and document all A. barrii present on designated areas of the ONG and (2) collect data on rare plant species and high quality native plant community occurrences.

Chlorine (Cl) toxicity has been recognized as a constraint for soybean production. Although the use of a Cl-tolerant crop easily solves the problem, current screening methodologies for Cl tolerance are often ineffective because of inadequate means of detecting and measuring plant response to salinity. In order to facilitate the evaluation process and selection of Cl-tolerant genotypes, a study was conducted to develop a rapid and effective method for screening Cl tolerance in soybean.
