Petalacte has been in continuous use for this genus of 1-3 species since proposed by D. Don. The only exception was Lessing's misuse of Petalolepis Cassini, from which he excluded the two original Australian species and substituted two from S. Africa. Lessing was not followed by later authors.T he genus was recently revised by Lundgren (in Bot. Notiser 127: 119-124. 1974) and this revision may be consulted for full references.

Growth patterns under controlled conditions and chemotaxonomic techniques involving protein and flavonoid analysis were used to investigate both interpopulational and species comparisons in the genus Liquidambar. Striking differences in budburstinq patterns after a dormant period were seen when comparing L. styraciflua and L. formosana. The latter species showed earlier initiation of growth. Dormancy patterns of L. styraciflua grown under growth chamber conditions showed a latitudinal cline. Cessation of growth occurred later in a Georgia population under both long and short day experimental periods than populations from Missouri and Kentucky. Germination And Haustorial Development In Orobanche Minor Smith (Orobanchaceae), David L. Spelce

Orobanche minor Smith is an introduced root parasite that is known to attack some commercial crops. Germination occurs only after a preconditioning period involving moisture which must be followed by a chemical stimulant produced by the host root. Strigol and strigol analogs (GR-compounds} have been reported to germinate some species of Orobanche. Statistical tests indicate a significant difference between the effectiveness of strigol, GR-7 and GR-45 (P = 0.001).
The embryo is an undifferentiated mass of cells. During germination, the radicular pole of the embryo differentiates into the radicle, while the plumular pole remains undifferentiated. The radicle forms the primary …
