This eighth volume in the comprehen­sive Illustrated Flora of Illinois series is the seventh volume devoted to flowering plants (the eighth volume is devoted to ferns) and the second treating dicotyledons, which include such well-known plants as roses, peas, mustards, mints, nightshades, milkweeds, and asters. The previous volume on dicots, Flower­ing Plants: Hollies to Loasas, was pub­lished in 1978.

In the present volume, Mohlenbrock includes three orders of vascular plants encompassing five families. The orders are Salicales and Tamaricales, of the Salicaceae and Tamaricaceae families, and Capparidales, of the Capparidaceae, Re­sedaceae, and Brassicaceae families. In all, 44 genera and 117 …

A census and atlas is provided of 1 119 native Western Australian plant species which were commercially exploited during 1977-79 in the cut plant, nursery or seed trades. The exploited species are concentrated in the vicinities of Perth and Albany, the two matin centres for the wildflower industry. Preliminary assessments of the conservation status of the exploited species are provided. Approximately r200 species are regarded as being rare, geographically or poorly collected, and further studies are recommended for these species to determine whether they are in danger of overexploitation.

Following a Cabinet endorsed recommendation by the Environmental Protection Authority in 1975, an area of vacant Crown Zand (the Toolonga Area) was examined during April and September, 1978.

The geology, soils and vegetation of the area are described and annotated lists of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles are presented. A small part of the area lies in the South West Botanical Province (Irwin District) but most is in the Eremaean Botanical Province (Carnarvon District). The vertebrate fauna is a mixture of south-western, Shark Bay and arid zone species, but the last predominate.

Analyses Of Illinois Wild Turkey Habitat And April Foods, Kim D. Price

A vegetative analysis of turkey habitat was conducted in Alexander, Jackson, Union, and Calhoun Counties, Illinois. From these studies it was determined that turkeys inhabit relatively open stands of timber with agricultural fields and forest clearings in close proximity. Species of Quercus comprise approximately 40% or more of the tree species sampled, with Q. alba, Q. rubra, and Q. velutina being the most dominant. Found growing in association with Quercus are species of Carya, Cornus florida, Acer saccharum, Sassafras albidum, Fraxinus americana, and Ulmus rubra, in varying concentrations. The lichen flora of "Rocks Park", Coles County, Illinois, was studied extensively. The tract (sec 17, T12N,R10E), which is located in east-central Illinois, was selected for study because of its diversity of habitats for lichen growth. A literature review of the studies of the lichens of east central and southern Illinois and nearby Indiana is included. The area is heavily dissected by the Embarrass River and a few small tributaries. The major vegetation type is oak-hickory forest. This tract was found to have four distinct habitats with different lichen associations. The habitats described are the following:

Cultures of various bacteria and fungi are often used in introductory botany classes. In most cases the students are simply asked to examine these colonies or to prepare a microscope slide. Directions are given in this paper for the preparation of optimal growth media which may be consumed by the student. This provides a new twist to otherwise routine laboratory exercises.

A study of the ferns in East Central Illinois was conducted between the spring of 1976 and the spring of 1980. The counties surveyed were Coles, Clark, and Cumberland. The majority of the field investigation was conducted near the moraines and waterways which dissect the area.

Keys are provided for the families, genera, and species. There are also descriptions and illustrations for each species considered. The description covers the gross external morphology and any variations that occur. Also included are habitat preference and local distribution data.
