Cyanobacteria are expected to adjust to new conditions better than other primary producers since they have a long history of adaptation as one of the first organisms on earth. Their ecophysiological adaptations differ widely among cyanobacterial species. As a stratified species, P. rubescens forms a population in the metalimnion during summer months in lakes with clear water and disperses in the whole water column during the period. This study aimed to explain the seasonal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the pelagic zone of a deep alkaline lake that is characterized by low phytoplankton abundance. Phytoplankton and water samples were collected seasonally from 9 points and 7 depths between the surface and 20 m from December 2004 to September 2005. Planktolyngbya contorta was the dominant or subdominant species in all seasons and depths. The dominance of Gomphonema species was observed in December, but they were subdominant in September. Twelve plantain ecotypes were characterized for molecular variability using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Out of the 60 RAPD and 40 ISSR primers tested, 16 RAPD and 14 ISSR primers were found polymorphic, and were used for molecular profiling of the plantain ecotypes. The average number of bands per primer, average number of polymorphic bands per primer, mean polymorphic information content (PIC) value, resolving power (Rp), and marker indices (MI) for RAPD primers were 8.63, 3.25, 0.87, 15.49, and 2.86, whereas the respective values for the ISSR assay were 7.93, 4.14, 0.85, 12.49, …

Castanea Mill. (chestnut) is a multipurpose deciduous tree and member of the family Fagaceae, widely distributed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. The evaluation of the genetic diversity of chestnut species is crucial for the effective conservation of this economically and ecologically valuable tree. Phytoliths in Poa pratensis L. (Poaceae) leaf blades and sheaths are described in this study. The role of plant opal particles-known as phytoliths-is considerable in taxonomical studies, and their long-term preservation in sediments makes them a useful tool in the reconstruction of ancient plant communities and plant-human interactions. All together, 2244 phytoliths were counted and analyzed in 25 plant samples (5 shoots of 5 specimens and approximately 500-600 phytoliths per specimen). The biogenic silica content of P. pratensis leaves was determined at 2.61%, and 27 morphotypes have been described using the International Code for Phytolith Nomenclature. Pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) were exposed to NaCl and/or NiCl_2 stress to investigate whether pure proline and Lolium perenne L. (LP) leaf extract could efficaciously protect against the phytotoxicity generated by nickel and/or salinity stress in pea. Both stress factors (salinity and nickel) significantly inhibited growth, total chlorophyll content, photosynthetic activity, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO_2 level, relative water content (RWC), and membrane stability index (MSI). However, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, proline, glycine betaine, total free amino acids, total soluble sugars, total phenolic compounds, tocopherol contents, lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage were significantly increased. The morphological features of Cephalaria Schrad. ex Roem. & Schult. were studied based on our specimens collected between 1994 and 2010 in Turkey and herbarium specimens from various herbaria. In the present study, typifications, a list of synonyms, descriptions, ecology, phytogeographical regions, conservation status, and distribution of all studied taxa are given. Taxonomic relationships between similar species are discussed. Illustrations of habit, flower, calyx, involucel, and involucral and receptacular bracts of some species are given. Reseda malatyana Yıldırım & Şenol (Resedaceae) is illustrated and described as a new species to science, endemic to eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Reseda malatyana is related to Reseda armena Boiss. It differs from Reseda armena by the following characters: densely smaller, unbranched at the upper part, papillate-hispidulous stems; dark green, thicker, and densely papillate-hispidulous leaves; bigger petals; smaller pedicels; relatively smaller with sinus seeds; oblate-spheroidal, tricolporate, and rugulate pollen grains. The family of AP2/ERF plant specific transcription factors, including dehydration-responsive element binding (DREB) proteins, has been reported to activate and bind with the dehydration responsive element/C repeat (DRE/CRT) of stress-inducible gene promoters. We amplified DREB1A from Oryza sativa var. IR6 (807 bp) and subjected it to protein homology modelling and phylogenetic analysis. BLAST sequence analysis indicated high similarity (99%) with the O. sativa japonica group. Phylogenetic analysis was carried out with other 12 DREB sequences from cereals/grasses using Clustal Omega. Watermelon fruit is very sensitive to ethylene, showing rapid deterioration and water-soaking upon ethylene exposure. The objective of this study was to isolate and determine the expressions of ethylene receptor genes in watermelon fruit. As a result of PCR amplification of cDNAs obtained via RT-PCR of total RNA from watermelon fruit with degenerate primers, 3 partial cDNAs were obtained. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are tiny, endogenous, nonprotein-coding, and functionally negative regulators of posttranscriptional gene regulation. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a starchy and tuberous crop that is also important for its potassium and vitamin contents. Though potato is the world's fourth largest food crop, its miRNAs and their targets have not been well studied. Here we report a comparative genomics approach that was applied to explore miRNAs and their targeted proteins in potato. Chamaedaphne calyculata, one of the largest shrubs in the family Ericaceae, is native to boreal zones of the northern hemisphere. The complete nucleotide sequence of the Chamaedaphne plastid genome was determined in the present study. The genome is a circular double-stranded DNA molecule 176,744 bp in length, that includes the typical large single-copy (LSC), small single-copy, and 2 inverted repeats (IR) regions. The C. calyculata plastid genome contains 113 genes, excluding the second IR region. The main aim of the study was to increase the knowledge on the ecology and biology of the boreal relict Salix lapponum L., an endangered plant in Poland, in order to create an effective protection program. An important aspect was to determine the within- and among-population genetic diversity of the studied species in order to evaluate whether the basic stages of the generative reproduction cycle in the populations were correct. Palynological characteristics of 30 Salvia taxa in sections Hymenosphace and Aethiopis from Turkey were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. S. aethiopis (sect. Aethiopis) has the smallest pollen while S. blepharochlaena (sect. Hymenosphace) has the largest pollen. The basic shape of the pollen grains in most taxa is suboblate, oblate-spheroidal, or prolate-spheroidal to spheroidal; however, subprolate pollen grains are occasionally are found in S. cassia of sect. Aethiopis. Synthetic cry1Ab gene was developed with optimised codons and expressed in the tobacco plastome. Characterisation of the synthetic cry1Ab gene was carried out on homoplasmic transgenic shoots. To purify the homoplasmic shoots, the proliferating heteroplasmic shoots were subjected to various rounds of selection and regeneration on spectinomycin-containing regeneration medium of plant medium. The PCR-screened homoplasmic shoots were placed on MS medium for root induction and proliferation. Sporobolus arabicus Boiss. is a perennial stoloniferous grass that prefers a saline or desert habitat. A natural population of Sporobolus arabicus growing in a salty area was compared with a normal nonsaline population. The salt-tolerant population showed better growth than its counterpart. Physioanatomical adaptations to saline environments in the salt-tolerant population were very specific. The present study has investigated the efficiency of regrowth of Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennell after 6 months of storage along with its clonal fidelity checking. Shoot tips and nodal segments of in vitro grown plantlets were encapsulated and stored at different temperatures and the highest regeneration was achieved by storing shoot tips at 4 °C for a period of 6 months. The response of shoot tips was found to be much better when compared to nodal segments in the case of forming healthy shoots and roots. Alyssum corsicum Duby is a candidate plant used for phytomining and phytoremediation studies with its high Ni-accumulating ability of the aboveground tissues. Metal localization and concentration by hyperaccumulator plants and the physiological basis of these phenomena have been of great interest in recent years. The composition of aquatic bryophyte and vascular plant assemblages, and 4 environmental variables (water velocity, shading, mean depth, and substrate type), together with altitude, ecological status, and river type were monitored at 223 sites along 204 rivers during 2009 in the Pontic Province and Eastern Balkan Ecoregions, Bulgaria. The relationships between macrophytes themselves and the parameters studied were tested. Forty-nine bryophytes and 86 vascular plants were identified. A new species, Asperula anatolica M.Ozturk (Rubiaceae), is described from south-east Turkey. A. anatolica grows on limestone bedrock, in Uludere District (C9 Şırnak Province). It is an endemic confined to south-east Anatolia, and it is related to A. comosa Schönb.-Tem in the section Cruciana. Asperula anatolica is distinct from a closely allied species, A. comosa, by its inflorescence, indumentum, corolla lobes and shape, bracts, bracteoles, internodes, seed coat surface, and pollen grains. The physiological responses to nitrate stress of 2 transgenic tobacco lines containing the cucumber mitogen-activated protein kinase (CsNMAPK) gene were investigated. Seed germination rates of the transgenic tobacco lines were higher than that of the wild type (WT) tobacco under 150 mM nitrate treatment. The transgenic seedlings had higher root fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) than the WT plants after 98 mM and 182 mM nitrate treatment. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content, electrolytic leakage (EL), and H_{2}O_2 content were higher in the WT than they were in the transgenic plants after 7-day nitrate stress treatment. The time-dependent effect of salicylic acid (SA) on alleviating cold damage in the Tokak (tolerant) and Akhisar (sensitive) varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare) was investigated. Seedlings subjected to 0.0, 0.1, and 1 mM SA for 7 days were transferred to cold (7/5 °C) on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 for 3 days. It was found that 0.1 mM SA had a greater alleviating effect, decreasing the freezing injury in both varieties for at least 10 days after the application. Pomegranate is one of the most important horticultural crops in Iran. Selection of suitable genotypes resistant to unfavourable environmental and soil conditions and diseases is important for increasing the yield efficiency and acreage of this important crop. The aim of this research was to compare commercial pomegranate genotypes in Iran and to determine any correlations between morphological characteristics. Eight pomegranate types were used during the research. Twenty-six morphological characteristics were evaluated based on the pomegranate descriptor. Presoaking maize (Zea mays) seeds in salicylic acid (SA) reduces damage caused by cadmium. In the present work the possible role of phytochelatins (PCs) in SA-mediated protection against Cd toxicity was investigated. Seeds were presoaked in 0.5 mM SA, and seedlings were grown in hydroponic solution containing 0, 0.01, 0.015, or 0.025 mM Cd. Treatment with Cd increased the PC levels in maize roots, but only slight changes were observed in the leaves. Long-term exposure to Cd decreased the phytochelatin synthase (PCS) activity in the roots and led to an increase in PCS and glutathione reductase (GR) activities in maize …

The mature seed coat structure in hard-seeded and soft-seeded varieties of Vicia sativa L. was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy to investigate differentiation in cytological and morphological features between these varieties. The outer layer of the seed coats was composed of macrosclereid (Malpighian) cells in the hard-seeded and soft-seeded varieties of Vicia sativa. The walls of the macrosclereid cells were thickened, and the cell vacuoles were filled with tannin. The cytoplasm of the macrosclereids contained small- and large-sized vacuoles and ribosomes, mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticulum. Seed priming with plant extracts and chemicals has been used as an important growth enhancement tool in crop plants; however, the mechanisms of their action are not fully explored. In this research, an attempt was made to understand the mechanism of various seed priming treatments in greenhouse-grown wheat. The seed priming treatments used were hydropriming, on-farm priming, moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) leaf extract (MLE) priming, and CaCl_2 priming. Results showed that all the seed priming treatments were effective in improving germination and seedling growth attributes of wheat over the control.
