On a broad scale, the extent of clearing and plowing of the crops in rangelands has brought a significant degradation in pasture species along with an invasion of weed species. This work evaluates the vegetation composition of an agriculture field after 15 years of exclosure and protection against clearing and plowing activities. Vegetation cover, density, richness, species dispersion, and diversity index were estimated through 12 permanent transects of 20 m in length and 23 quadrats of 1 m2 over a 3-year period. New Or Additional Cladoniicolous Fungi For Turkey, Mustafa Kocakaya, Mehmet Gökhan Halici, Raquel Pino Bodas

This study reports twelve species of cladoniicolous fungi from Turkey. Nine of these taxa, i.e. Abrothallus cladoniae R.Sant. And D.Hawksw., Epicladonia stenospora (Harm.) D.Hawksw., Lichenosticta alcicornaria (Linds.) D.Hawksw., Lichenoconium aeruginosum Diederich, M.Brand, van den Boom and Lawrey, Phoma foliaceiphila Diederich, Kocourk. And Etayo, Scutula cladoniicola Alstrup and D.Hawksw., Sphaerellothecium cladoniicola E.S. Hansen and Alstrup, Syzygospora bachmannii Diederich and M.S.Christ., and Taeniolella beschiana Diederich, are new records for Turkey. A key to these 12 species of lichenicolous fungi on Cladonia species is provided.

Muscari elmasii Yıldırım (Asparagaceae) is described as a new species to science. It is endemic to the western Anatolia region of Turkey. M. elmasii is known from a single locality in Muğla Province. It is related to M. weissii and M. massayamum by morphological features and shows some similarities in terms of morphological characters and the same distribution area to M. mirum. Bellevalia vuralii B.Şahin & Aslan is described as a new species of Bellevalia from southeast Turkey. As well as its morphological characteristics and classification with regards to sections, its description, ecology, and relationship with related species are presented and discussed. The somatic chromosome number of these species was defined to be 2n = 8.

Prospero cudidaghense Fırat & Yıldırım (Asparagaceae) is described as a species new to science based on morphological studies. It is endemic to the eastern Anatolian region of Turkey. P. cudidaghense is known from a single locality on Cudi Mountain, located in Şırnak Province. It is an isolated taxon of the genus Prospero. It is related to P. autumnale and P. seisumsianum. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed and compared with those of related taxa. It can be easily distinguished from all taxa in the genus Prospero by its spring flowering time, synanthous leaves, and chasmophytic habit.

A synopsis of the sect. Hymenocoleus Bunge, sect. Hymenostegis Bunge, and sect. Macrophyllium Boiss. belonging to Astragalus L. in Turkey is given based on a revisional study carried out in Turkey. As a result of this study, an account of 19 species including keys and general distribution as well as their conservation status in Turkey is given. It is determined that A. narmanicus Karaman & Aytaç is new to science and A. expetitus Maassoumi, A. pereshkhoranicus Maassoumi & F.Ghahrem., and A. marivanensis Maassoumi & Podlech do not exist in Turkey. Additionally, the name of the sect. Hymenocoleus is preserved.

In a literature search, the presence of Haematococcus in phytoplankton communities and its biogeography were investigated. Haematococcus, although showing a wide biogeographical distribution, has been rarely found in phytoplankton communities. Simultaneously, the colonization potential of air-dispersed Haematococcus in ephemeral waters and its interactions with coexisting phytoplankton taxa were examined by microscopy and molecular methods. Haematococcus was a successful colonist, appearing among the first taxa in the experimental containers. According to principal component analysis, Haematococcus growth rate was negatively correlated with the abundance and species richness of the other autotrophs. Eumusae leaf spot disease, caused by Mycosphaerella eumusae, is widely distributed in different banana growing countries in Asia and Africa, causing severe losses in yield and quality of banana. The aim of this study was to identify the differentially expressed defense responsive genes through subtractive suppression hybridization (SSH) in the Musa-M. eumusae interaction system. In this method, leaf samples collected at different intervals between 0 and 72 h postinoculation (hpi) of M. eumusae from resistant (Manoranjitham-AAA) and susceptible (Grand Naine-AAA) cultivars were subjected to cDNA-SSH library construction. We tested the phylogenetic utility of three chloroplast DNA loci, i.e. the trnL(UAA) intron, trnL(UAA)-F(GAA) intergenic spacer (IGS), and trnV(UAC) intron, across thirteen native Oxytropis species. Our objective was to determine whether any of these chloroplast DNA markers could be beneficial to figure out phylogenetic relationships among Oxytropis species. To increase the interspecific sampling, nine sequences of the trnL intron and trnL-F regions were retrieved from GenBank and included in the analyses. Pilosella ilgazensis Vladimirov, Coşkunçelebi & Kit Tan, a new diploid (2n = 2x = 18) species from Ilgaz Mountain National Park, North Anatolia, Turkey, is described and illustrated. It grows in subalpine grassland and open Juniperus sibirica Burgsd. communities. Pilosella ilgazensis is morphologically intermediate between P. alpicola s.l., from the high mountains of Central and Southeast Europe, and the Euro-Asiatic Pilosella echioides s.l. The relationship of the species with other similar taxa is discussed. This paper reports the morphological characters of 18 Iranian species of the genus Alchemilla using light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains are monad, radially symmetrical, isopolar, or subisopolar; small to medium in size; tri- and tetracolporate; rectangular to cylindrical (from equatorial view) and triangular to circular (from polar view) in outline; and prolate-spheroidal to subprolate and prolate in shape. The exine ornamentation is psilate and microechinate. Seed Micromorphology In Dactylorhiza Necker Ex Nevski (Orchidaceae) And Allied Genera, Roberto Gamarra, Pablo Galan, Henrik Aerenlund Pedersen, Emma Ortunez, Ernesto Sanz

Seeds of 21 taxa of the genera Dactylorhiza (incl. Coeloglossum), Gymnadenia (incl. Nigritella) and Pseudorchis were examined by light microscope and SEM. Qualitative and quantitative characters were analyzed. In Dactylorhiza, the seeds are fusiform, but some populations of D. viridis show clavate seeds. According to the ornamentation of the periclinal walls, 3 types of seeds are recognized in this genus. The considerable variation in the seed coat ornamentation pattern in the taxa belonging to majalis, maculata, and praetermissa groups of the genus Dactylorhiza is congruent with the genetic processes that occurred during the history of this genus. The current research aimed to evaluate the possible impacts of foliar supplementations of selenium (Se) and/or ascorbic acid (AsA) on basil. Seedlings were foliarly treated with 4 concentrations of Se (0, 30, 60, and 120 mg L-1) and/or 2 levels of AsA (0 and 200 mg L-1), 2 times with 2-week intervals. In contrast to Se30, chla contents were significantly decreased by Se120 compared with the control. Se applications had a reducing effect on chlb contents. A survey of both ectomycorrhizal (ECM) root tips and fruiting bodies of ECM fungi was carried out during a four-year period (2009-2012) in two similar forest stands in central Italy, previously investigated in detail being habitats of the Italian white truffle Tuber magnatum Pico. A new species, Lyophyllum turcicum, from the Kümbet plateau of the Dereli district in Giresun Province, Turkey, is described, taxonomically delimited, and illustrated based on morphological and molecular data. The new species belongs to a small group of species in the Lyophyllum sect. Difformia as traditionally circumscribed. Lyophyllum turcicum is easily distinguished mainly by the light tinges of the basidiomes, filiform-fusiform to cylindro-flexuose marginal cells, and elongate, ellipsoid spores.

In plants, pyrophosphate (PPi), generated in a wide range of reversible anabolic reactions, is hydrolyzed by pyrophosphatases. The presence of tonoplast- and Golgi-integral H+-translocating pyrophosphatases in plants led to the conclusion that plant cytosol has no soluble pyrophosphatase activity. However, the Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. Genome also encodes five soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms (Ppas). There are almost no data in the literature on their redundancy in plant metabolism; therefore, we performed expression analyses of A. Thaliana soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms in response to external stimuli including carbohydrate status, hormone action, and stress exposure. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of nutritional formulations, viz. Bristol's medium (BM), water extract of dairy waste (DW), commercial fertilizers mix (FM), and carbon sources such as NaHCO3, CaCO3, and wheat flour hydrolysate on the biomass productivity and oil content of the algal species Sirogonium sticticum, Temnogyra reflexa, Uronema elongatum, and Chroococcus turgidus. Among the nutritional formulations tested, BM showed the highest average effect, followed by DW, on the biomass and oil contents of the species. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the alleviating role of thiourea (TU) on antioxidants and some vital physiological attributes in salt-stressed plants of two maize cultivars. The maize cv. DK 5783 performed better than cv. Apex 836 in an initial experiment. Of the six TU levels used in the initial experiment, 400 and 500 mg L-1 were chosen for subsequent studies. The low artemisinin content in Artemisia has caused this compound to be expensive among medicines. Several attempts have been made to increase its production by altering the expression of different genes. However, no approach has been cost-effective. In this study, the expression levels of SQS and DBR2 genes were quantified by qRT-PCR, and artemisinin content was measured by HPLC in Artemisia annua cell suspension culture under nano cobalt particles elicitation. Differentially responding genotypes are comparatively used to understand mechanisms of metal tolerance in higher plants. The feasibility of the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was evaluated to screen for metal tolerance within plants as an alternative to physiological growth parameters. Eight hydroponically grown barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes were exposed to different concentrations (75, 150, and 225 μM) of cadmium and copper for 7 days and subsequently harvested for determining metal tolerance indices by comparing dry biomass to genomic template stabilities based on their RAPD profiles. This paper presents a taxonomic contribution to the genus Pyrus L. P. Georgica and P. Pseudosyriaca are reported from Turkey for the first time. The status of P. Pseudosyriaca is discussed and it is treated as a new variety of Pyrus syriaca. Notes on the chorology, morphological descriptions, figures, and taxonomy are provided. Moreover, P. Serikensis and P. Boissieriana are reduced to synonyms of P. Cordata. An endemic subspecies, P. Elaeagrifolia subsp. Kotschyana, is compared with the related species P. Identification of vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporters facilitates the basis of salt stress tolerance mechanisms. Na+ accumulation into the vacuole is crucial for the avoidance of cytoplasmic Na+ toxicity. In this study, we show that the introduction of AtNHX1 into tobacco generated more tolerant plants when compared to wild-type plants. Transgenic tobacco plants exhibited higher germination rates in the presence of increasing salt concentrations compared to wild-type plants. In addition, proline levels were higher under salt stress conditions in both the shoots and the roots of transgenics compared to wild-type plants. In North Africa, Allium roseum L. Has been treated as a polymorphic species comprising 12 different taxa. More than 80 individuals in the Allium roseum complex were sampled from 20 populations at different localities in Tunisia and investigated karyologically. Basic chromosome number was confirmed as x = 8. Three cytotypes, diploid (2n = 2x = 16), triploid (2n = 3x = 24), and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 32), were found. It is well documented that the homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors play diverse roles during plant growth and development. The Class I HD-Zip genes are shown to be involved in the regulation of abiotic stress responses and tolerance. Herein, a novel Class I HD-Zip gene, EsHD1, was isolated from Eutrema salsugineum, and an investigation was performed of its physiological functions in response to drought stress. The analyses of gene expression profiles revealed that the EsHD1 transcripts quickly accumulated upon exposure to various abiotic stress conditions or abscisic acid treatments. Two drought-tolerant transgenic rice lines, L-8 (single copy) and L-23 (two copy), expressing the Capsicum annuum methionine sulfoxide reductase B2 (CaMsrB2) gene were selected for stress tolerance phenotyping under drought stress conditions. The two transgenic lines were selected on the basis of laboratory experiments and for performing well against drought. Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the major yield-limiting factors in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), especially when grown in calcareous soils. The soils of the Pothwar region in Pakistan are calcareous in nature, exposing peanut to Fe deficiency.
