The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson

Isolation of a phytotoxin from the ring rot pathogen of potatoes, Corynebacterium sepedonicum, had previously been reported by Strobel (21). The first phase in our study was to investigate more extensively the general nature of this compound. The phytotoxin could possibly be a specific compound associated only with the ring rot pathogen. However, the possibility that the substance could be obtained from sources other than the bacterium had not been completely eliminated. In an attempt to answer this question, three extracts were purified and compared. First, compounds were isolated from a broth culture of bacteria in the manner described …

Morphology And Development Of The Flowers Of Boottia Cordata, Ottelia Alismoides, And Their Synthetic Hybrid (Hydrocharitaceae), Robert B. Kaul

The inferior ovary of Boottia cordata, Ottelia alismoides, and their hybrid is appendicular in nature, the carpels are congenitally only slightly connate, and they are unsealed. All floral organs except the sepals originate from common primordia in the female and bisexual flowers. A flat residual floral apex is present. There is a vestigial superior ovary of three ontogeneticallv fused carpels in the male flower of Boottia cordata. The hybrid is intermediate in many characteristics and has partially fertile stamens and staminodia. The sequence of development in all flowers is acropetal. These plants appear to be related to …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Western ironweed (Vernonia baldwini Torr.) is a member of a widespread and diverse genus. The genus is characterized by perennial herbs and shrubs. Weaver and Darland listed the increase of western ironweed, at one time sparsely distributed, as an indication of degeneration of the true prairie. They described the invasion, spread, and ultimate dominance of western ironweed in many pastures after the drought years. Weaver measured ironweed roots to a depth of 11 or 12 ft., and remarked that it was one of "the most abundant and worst weeds in native pastures derived from the true prairie." Research has …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Musk thistle (Carduus nutans L.) was added to the Nebraska noxious weed list in 1959. The objectives of this study were: (a) to determine the normal life cycle of musk thistle in Nebraska; (b) to determine the variations from the normal life cycle of musk thistle; and (c) to furnish a summary of the phenology for musk thistle in southeastern Nebraska. Observations are used freely throughout the text to describe morphological variations occurring within musk thistle that are not easily quantified.

The vascular anatomy of 13 of the 15 genera of the Hydrocharitaceae has been studied, and certain aspects of floral morphology are considered. The flowers of the family show a broad range of specialized structures combined with primitive characteristics. The origin of paired and single stamens is interpreted as probable modifications of fascicled stamens. Extreme reduction in the androecium is shown for several genera. Tendencies toward reduction and fusion within the gynoecium are pronounced. Most genera are at least slightly syncarpous, but a few are apocarpous. The inferior ovary is appendicular in nature, with some genera exhibiting more complete fusion …

The flower of Hydrocleis nymphoides consists of three sepals which arise in spiral succession, three simultaneously arising petals, numerous stamens and staminodia which arise in centrifugal order, and six carpels. A residual apex remains at maturity. The first-formed members of the androecium are stamens and the later-formed members are staminodia which develop below the stamens and which become outwardly displaced during expansion of the receptacle. The androecium is supplied by branching vascular trunk bundles. The carpels are completely open but the ventral margins are slightly conduplicately appressed basally. Development And Vasculature Of The Flowers Of Lophotocarpus Calycinus And Sagittaria Latifolia (Alismaceae), Robert B. Kaul

The development of the bisexual flower of Lophotocarpus calycinus and of the unisexual flowers of Sagittaria latifolia has been observed. In all cases floral organs arise in acropetal succession. In L. calycinus, after initiation of the perianth, the first whorl of stamens to form consists of six stamens and is ordinarily followed by two alternating whorls of six stamens each. The very numerous carpels are initiated spirally. In the male flower of S. latifolia the androecium develops in spiral order. A few rudimentary carpels appear near the floral apex after initiation of the stamens. There are no staminodia. The female …

The flowers of Limnocharis flava (L.) Buch. are borne in an indeterminate umbel and each consists of three sepals, three yellow petals, and about 18 carpels surrounded by numerous stamens and staminodia. The androecium is centrifugally developed, and the last-formed members are staminodial; it is supplied by branching vascular systems. Carpels arise almost simultaneously, and a prominent residual floral apex remains. The carpels are partially conduplicately closed and are also primitive in possessing laminar placentation and in lacking differentiation of a style. The gynoecium is essentially apocarpous, but there are slight fusions of adjacent carpels near their ventral margins where …

This study was undertaken to devise an easy, accurate method to detect and separate various components in extracts of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants by using techniques common to virus purification and to determine the effect of some of the more common denaturing and adsorbing agents on these healthy plant components.Conditions for density-gradient centrifugation were selected to give the best separation of normal components, and these conditions were then used as the basis of an analytical method to evaluate the denaturation procedures.

Side-oats grama, Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr., is a warm-season grass distributed widely in the native grasslands of continental United States. It has long been considered a valuable forage grass. Its habit of growth and favorable seed-producing qualities have suggested its suitability for domestication as a pasture crop. Investigations which contributed to the domestication of side-oats grama were conducted at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station in a 12-year period, 1948 to 1960. Field trials were carried on to evaluate forage and seed yields of selected strains and varieties from different regions. Good stable soil structure is valuable for promoting the growth of plants and micro-organisms by permitting enhanced aeration and water penetration and by decreasing erosion under some conditions.

Micro-organisms influence water percolation through the soil. They may plug up soil pores with byproducts of growth and reduce water percolation. On the other hand, if a soil containing a large amount of microbial products is stirred and allowed to dry, then the percolation may be high.

A new race of hardy perennials is beginning to appear in American gardens. These are the penstemons, a genus of plants closely related to the familiar snapdragon, which may become important ornamentals as they become better known to gardeners. The purpose of this bulletin is to show the possibility of the genus as an ornamental and to suggest species and species hybrids of possible value to Great Plains gardeners; to provide information about propagation and culture; and to encourage gardeners to engage in penstemon breeding as an avocation.

Approximately three and one-third million acres of native prairie are harvested annually in Nebraska for hay. In the four-year period 1948-1951, the State ranked first in wild hay production with an average yield of more than two and one-quarter million tons per year. This crop is an important natural resource in Nebraska's livestock industry. Studies were initiated in 1945 to determine the effects of time of cutting on the yield and feeding value of prairie hay in southeastern Nebraska.
