Cheilocostus speciosus (Syn: Costus speciosus) (Crepe or spiral ginger) is one of the species of the family Costaceae that is widely used in various traditional medicines for treating various ailments. Mokko lactone (ML) belongs to the guaianolide family of sesquiterpenes, which has been separated from C. speciosus. It showed noticeable antiinflammation and antioxidative capacities. The current study explored the ML hepatoprotective potential against FHF (fulminant hepatic failure) in mice. FHF was successfully established using intraperitoneal injection of ?-galactosamine (?-GalN, 700 mg/kg)/lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10 µg/kg) in male Swiss-albino mice. A New Achillea (Asteraceae) Species From Southwestern Turkey, Gürkan Semi̇z, Tuna Uysal, Meryem Bozkurt, Batikan Günal

Achillea alimeana Semiz & Uysal sp. nov. of sect. Santolinoidea DC. (Asteraceae), was described, diagnosed and illustrated as a new species. It was collected from Akdağ Mountains in Denizli Province. In this paper, the diagnostic characters of A. alimeana and its similar species were discussed in the morphological, palynological and molecular findings. As regards the new species, some notes on the ecology, conservation status, and distribution were submitted. A diagnostic key was given for related taxa.

The aim of the present study was to examine the diversity for heat tolerance in a set of 105 accessions using some key morphophysiological attributes. The data was standardized by calculating percent change over control, and used for phonetic analysis and construction of dendograms based on distance matrix (all primary data is given as supplementary material listed in statistical analysis section of Materials and Methods). Changes in plant cell walls are critical for expansion and growth. Xyloglucan endotransglycosylase/hydrolase (XTH) enzymes are the major modifiers of xyloglucan within the cell wall and are present as large gene families. Despite the paucity of xyloglucan in barley, our analyses of the barley genome revealed at least 42 XTH genes, the most XTH members recorded for a monocot genome to date. Most species of Paraphlomis are distributed in the south of the Yangtze River in China. In this study, a new species, P. nana, from northeast Chongqing in the north of the Yangtze River is described and illustrated. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses based on two nuclear ribosomal DNA regions (ITS and ETS) and three plastid DNA markers (rpl32-trnL, rps16, and trnL-trnF) were carried out to explore the phylogenetic position of the new species within Paraphlomis. Two new species of Agaricus, namely A. midnapurensis and A. purpureosquamulosus, belonging to A. subg. Minores, are proposed here as new to science based on specimens collected in West Bengal, India. Agaricus midnapurensis is distinguished by its medium-sized basidiomata with a pileus covered by greyish brown to brown or dark brown squamules, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores with a mean value of 7.3 × 5.4 µm, and broadly clavate to pyriform cheilocystidia, 22-28 × 10-14 µm. The impact of Fe2+ (iron)toxicity on genomic instability, DNA methylation status, and Long Terminal Repeat Retrotransposons (LTR RTs) polymorphisms on Zea mays is unknown. We investigated the toxicity of Fe2+ using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Coupled Restriction Enzyme Digestion-Random Amplification (CRED-RA) and Inter Retrotransposon Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) assays in Zea mays seedlings, respectively. The results indicated that each dose of FeSO4 (50, 100, 200, and 300 mg/L) had a reducing effect on Genomic Template Stability (GTS) and increasing in RAPD pattern changes (DNA damage). The new lichen species Shackletonia backorii Halıcı, Güllü & Kahraman is described from James Ross Island, which is located in the North-East Antarctic Peninsula region. The new species is morphologically most similar to S. insignis (Søchting & Øvstedal) Søchting, Frödén & Arup, which was described from Livingstone Island (North-West Antarctic Peninsula region). These two species have a similar bluish grey to blackish thallus with a microfruticose and coralloid structure and red brown or almost black zeorine apothecia, but S. backorii has rhomboid ascospores and grows on soil whereas S. insignis has ellipsoid ascospores and occurs in sheltered crevices of rocks. …

Cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs) are ligand-gated calcium signaling channels, play vital biological functions. Nonetheless, the CNGC gene families have not been well studied in Brassicaceae which includes commercially important and evolutionary model crops. Here, using in silico approaches, we recognized 414 CNGC genes in sixteen sequenced genomes of Brassicaceae species, which represent 10 genera of 8 tribes, ranging between 10-51 genes. These CNGCs can be classified into four main groups (I-IV) and two subgroups (IV-A and IV-B), of which, Group-II CNGC is the oldest that has gradually disappeared from the Arabis alpina L. genome. A long fruit (lf) mutant was obtained from the cucumber inbred line 'SN5' by ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-mediated mutagenesis. We found that plant height and internode length of lf were significantly decreased, while leaf area was significantly increased in comparison to wild type (WT) plants. Higher carbohydrate level, together with lower chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters, was revealed in lf leaves than those of WT. Longer fruits, as well as enhanced fruit quality, were observed for mutant plants in comparison to WT, and the difference in fruit length was continuously increased with the development of fruits. Arundinella Stenostachya (Arundinella, Poaceae), A Reevaluated New Species From Se Asia, Liqiong Jiang, Zhenwen Liu, Ende Liu, Atchara Teerawatananon, Yuehua Wang, Hua Peng

Arundinella stenostachya, a new species, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to A. decempedalis and A. bengalensis, but differs from the former species by the length of panicle branches, type of trichome on nodes and pedicels length, and from the latter in height and diameter of culms, the length and width of leaf blades, pedicels length, and the length of panicles and branches. The new species has been mistakenly identified as A. decempedalis and A. bengalensis. Molecular analyses based on ITS sequences also support A. stenostachya as a distinct species.

In this study, archaeobotanical data were gathered from the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Age layers (2400-1200 BC) of the Tatarlı Höyük exposed in the 2011?2012 excavation seasons in the Ceyhan district of Adana Province were evaluated. In 8 trenches relating to these periods, archaeological contexts such as inside areas, hearths, ovens, middens, ceramic pots, etc., as well as contexts with carbonized plant remains were recovered by using dry and wet sieving methods, corresponding in total to 90 soil samples. A new species Pseudocercospora solanicola is discovered causing severe leaf spot disease on Solanum nigrum from Sonebhadra. Species is described and illustrated based on morphology, molecular sequence analysis and phylogeny of the large subunit (LSU) and internal transcribed spacer region of the nuclear ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Morphologically, new species has similarity with allied species in Pseudocercospora but differs in having black circular, velvety leaf spot and size of stromata, conidia and conidiophores. A key to Pseudocercospora species on Solanum has been provided.

Lamium is a taxonomically convoluted genus of about 34 species. Within Lamium, the L. garganicum species complex is particularly challenging. Here, based on morphological and molecular studies, Lamium cappadocicum Celep & Karaer sp. nova (Lamiaceae) is separated from L. garganicum and L. bilgilii and described as a new species, and L. garganicum subsp. rectum (= L. garganicum subsp. pulchrum) is resurrected. This study was conducted to estimate genetic relationships among banana clones growing in Turkey via some morphological parameters and two molecular marker systems. In terms of yield parameters such as bunch weight, hand number, fruit weight, and total fruit number, Grand Nain (GN) clone came to the forefront with the highest values. Coastal dunes are characterised by plant species adapted to harsh conditions. Salinity and other factors (soil pH, nutrients, and climate events) vary along the landward gradient. The current study investigated the effects of environmental factors on the occurrence and composition of coastal dune plants. Ellenberg ecological indicator values (EIVs), species tolerance values (TVs), and species niche models for salinity, nutrient availability, and soil reaction were determined. Two species of Whalleya from Guizhou and Hainan Provinces were collected during the investigation of Xylariales from 2019 to 2021. According to morphological and molecular characteristics, Whalleya hainanensis sp. nov. and W. microplaca are introduced. Whalleya hainanensis differs from W. microplaca by its obovoid or tubular perithecia and the slightly raised stromata; and differs from W. maculata by its smaller ascospores. Their detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations are provided. The taxonomic position of Whalleya is discussed.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a pseudo cereal crop, which is considered a new alternative crop due to its high nutritional value and tolerance to environmental stresses. Its seeds are rich in proteins and amino acids (e.g., lysine, threonine, and methionine) that are deficient in other pseudo-cereal crops. Stachys species show high morphological diversity and their main diagnostic characteristics are calyx and corolla length, ratio of tooth to calyx, and verticillaster arrangement. This manuscript describes and provides detailed morphological, micromorphological and molecular information about a new species, Stachys istanbulensis Ö. Güner, and its close relatives. The new species resembles S. recta complex, but is distinguished by its procumbent flowering stems, shorter calyx and teeth, congested verticillasters, creamy yellow corolla and oblong-obovoid nutlets.
