Effects Of Salinity: Calcium Interaction On Growth And Nucleic Acid Metabolism In Five Species Of Chenopodiaceae, Essam E. M. Abo-Kassem
Turkish Journal of Botany
Seed germination, seedling growth, and some enzyme activity of nucleic acid metabolism were studied in 5 members of Chenopodiaceae [Beta vulgaris L., Chenopodium quinoa Willd., Spinacea oleracea L., Allenrolfia occidentalis (S.Watson) Kuntze, Atriplex hortensis L.] under NaCl salinity alone or combined with 0.5 mM CaSO_4. High salinity delayed radical emergence and decreased germination percentage in all plants. Combined CaSO_4 reduced inhibition of seed germination in B. vulgaris, S. oleracea, and A. hortensis, but increased it in C. quinoa and A. occidentalis. CaSO_4 reduced plant growth to a greater degree than high salinity did. High salinity decreased total nucleic acid content …

Evaluation Of Karyotype Status Of Musa L. Somaclonal Variants (Musaceae: Zingiberales), Gordian C. Obute, Philip C. Aziagba
Turkish Journal of Botany
Tissue culture regenerated materials of Musa L. spp. (banana and plantain) along with their somaclonal variants were assessed for karyotype abnormalities to be used as indicators for rapid cytological marking. The results show that although slight variations were noted in karyomorphometric characters, like chromosome number, arm length, total chromosome length, and total chromosome volume, these were not significant (P £ 0.05). Therefore, chromosomal abnormalities may not be accurate markers for somaclonal variation in these species. The need to not overemphasise chromosomal instability resulting from culture techniques was highlighted. Other possible causes of somaclonal variations were proposed to explain this phenomenon …

Antioxidant responses were analysed in Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don. under 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl in order to investigate the plant´s protective mechanisms against long-term salt-induced oxidative stress. The NaCl treatments were repeated in 4 different stages of growth, i.e. 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after sowing (DAS). The plants were uprooted randomly 90 DAS and the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant potentials were analysed. High salinity caused a decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and an enhancement in total ascorbate (AA) content and the antioxidant enzyme and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) activities. Moreover, salinity induced a significant decline …

Determination Of Phytogenetic Relationships Among Isoetes Species Using Random Primers, Yogendra K. Tripathi, Priyatansh Gurha, D. Ghosh, R. V. Kumar, Ved Prakash
Turkish Journal of Botany
Isoetes L. is an ancient, primitive genus of lycopsids. The genus occupies a unique position in plant evolution as the closest relatives of tree lycopods. The morphological characters, namely leaf size, comb, and sporophyll size, are used diagnostically to help in the identification of the Isoetes species. Thus, species identification of Isoetes is always problematic and the knowledge on the genetic relationship of Isoetes species is also limited. Therefore, in order to find a suitable method for species identification and estimation of genetic relationship among different species of Isoetes, a Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique based on Polymerase Chain …
