Hypocotyl explants of 3 flax cultivars were cultured for adventitious shoot regeneration in 3 different ways. Two pretreatment applications were compared with the routinely applied conventional regeneration protocol of culturing explants directly on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1 mg L^{-1} 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.02 mg L^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). In the first pretreatment application, explants kept in a sterile cabin under an air flow for 30 min were immersed in MS solution containing 1 mg L^{-1} BAP and 0.02 mg L^{-1} NAA for 15 min; then pretreated explants were cultured on MS medium without any growth regulators …

Linum aretioides Boiss., a local endemic, is distributed only on 2 mountains (İzmir: Bozdağ; Denizli: Babadağ) at the western part of Turkey between 1630 and 2300 m altitudes, above the tree line. The studies were conducted on Mount Bozdağ above the ski complex between 1750 and 2150 m, and on Mount Babadağ between 1630-2300 m both located at subalpine zones. Four 8 × 8 m quadrats on Bozdağ and 5 on Babadağ were used for the experiments. A brief account on the morphology and ecology of the monotypic genus Moltkiopsis I.M.Johnst. (Boraginaceae) is given. An overview of the genus with notes on heterostyly, communities, soil, regeneration, vernacular names, etc. is presented. Variations present in some of the populations of Moltkiopsis ciliata (Forssk.) I.M.Johnst., particularly in the floral parts, are also explained in detail.

As an initial part of a revisional study based on the genus Micromeria Benth. (Lamiaceae), extensive field studies, herbarium and literature surveys, and multivariate analysis have been conducted. Recently, many morphological and molecular studies have been conducted on the genus Micromeria and related genera. Consequently, the generic boundaries of Micromeria have dramatically changed. Allium dentiferum Webb & Berthel and Allium dodecanesii Karavokyrou & Tzanoudak were collected during a floristic study of South Anatolia. A. dodecanesii is reported as a new record for the flora of Turkey. Although collected earlier by Aznavour, Bothmer, and Brullo, specimens of A. dentiferum were misinterpreted and the species was thus not recorded for the flora of Turkey. We provide drawings and photographs of the species, and maps of their distribution in Turkey.

A total of 48 epiphytic lichen species were found on the various tree species (Abies nordmanniana (Stev.) Spach subsp. bornmuelleriana (Mattf.) Coode & Cullen, Fagus orientalis Lipsky, and Pinus nigra Arnold. subsp. pallasiana (Lamb.) Holmboe) that formed communities on the north-west, extending from 1300 to 1600 m altitudes, of Mt. Uludağ in Bursa. Twenty-five epiphytic lichen species that occur on more than 4 sample trees were statistically analysed. The most frequent species were Pseudevernia furfuracea L. (Zopf.), Hypogymnia tubulosa (Schaer.) Hav., Parmelia sulcata Taylor, Lecanora chlarotera Nyl., and Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach., in descending order. Indicator species for Fagus orientalis …

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) is one of the easiest and most commonly used molecular techniques for genetic variability analysis. In the present study, the genetic diversity of analysis of Bellis perennis L. collected in 4 Turkish geographical locations was investigated by RAPD-PCR analysis. In addition to RAPD, pollen analysis of the 4 plant populations was also conducted. Out of 40 RAPD primers tested, 12 exhibited distinct banding patterns showing 45% to 79% polymorphism. Karyology Of Ten Turkish Trigonella L. (Leguminosae) Species From Section Cylindricae Boiss., Esra Marti̇n, Hasan Akan, Murat Eki̇ci̇, Zeki̇ Aytaç

This study describes the karyotypes of 10 Turkish species of Trigonella L. belonging to section Cylindricae Boiss. (Leguminosae). Excluding the karyotypes of T. velutina Boiss. and of T. sibthorpii Boiss., which were previously studied, all of the other 8 species were studied here for the first time. The species of the section were gathered from different localities in Turkey, and it was determined that the somatic chromosome numbers for all species were the same (2n = 16). Also, satellite metaphase chromosomes were determined in T. velutina and T. strangulata.

Pollen morphology of the 13 taxa of Scorzonera L. (Asteraceae) from Turkey was investigated by using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result of LM and SEM observations, it was found that the pollen types are generally isopolar, radially symmetric, triangular in polar view, and lophate, with lophae ornamentations that are echinate-perforate and an exine thickness ranging from 6.99 to 11.82 µm. The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis stages in Chenopodium botrys L. were studied with light microscopy. Flowers and young pods were removed from natural plants and fixed in FAA 70, stored in 70% ethanol, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned at 7 µm with a microtome. Staining was carried out with Hematoxylin and Eosin and developmental stages of ovule were studied. The results of this research showed that ovule development, including megasporogenesis and initial stages of megagametogenesis, occurred while flowers were still in bud. Ornithogalum nurdaniae Y.Bağcı & Savran sp. nov. (Liliaceae), a new species related to O. oligophyllum E.D.Clarke, is described and illustrated from Uludağ (the Bithynian Olympus), a mountain in NW Anatolia well known for its rich flora and many local endemics (A2 Bursa province). Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Notes are also presented on the ecology, biogeography, and conservation status of the new species.

Aegilops juvenalis (Thell.) Eig (Poaceae) is recorded and vouchered for the first time from Turkey. This first vouchered wild record is confined to Ceylanpınar province in C8 Şanlıurfa. The diagnostic morphological characters discriminating it from of Aegilops crassa Boiss. are pointed out. Notes are presented on its ecology and phenology. A distribution map of this species is also given.

Herein 152 taxa of lichens and lichenicolous fungi belonging to 68 genera are reported from Kızıldağ (Derebucak district, Konya province). Of these, 149 taxa are reported from the study area for the first time and 96 taxa are new for Konya province. Lecanora perpruinosa Fröberg and Toninia submexicana de Lesd. are new records for Turkey and Asia.

Three hundred and two lichenised fungi taxa belonging to 90 genera and 45 lichenicolous fungi taxa belonging to 24 genera are reported from Aladağlar National Park. Of these, 290 lichenised fungi taxa and 21 lichenicolous fungi taxa are reported for the first time from Aladağlar National Park. Nine species of lichenised fungi, namely Arthopyrenia fraxini A.Massal., Aspicilia obscurata (Fr.) Arnold, Cephalophysis leucospila (Anzi) H.Kilias & Scheid., Chaenotheca ferruginea (Turner ex Sm.) Nuclear And Non-Nuclear Interactions In F_1 Hybrid Populations Of Three Solanum Species In The Subgenus Leptostemonum,Section Melongena (Solanaceae), Olatunji A. Oyelana, K. Olusola Ogunwenmo

Reciprocal crosses involving Solanum gilo Raddi, S. anguivi Lam. and S. macrocarpon L., subg. Leptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter sect. Melongena Dunal were produced in order to assess inherent nuclear and non-nuclear influences on hybrid fitness, the extent of genomic change, and species compatibility. Hybrids expressed intermediacy and overlaps in leaf, petiole, petal, and plant height dimensions. Maternal influence was dominant in growth habit, leaf shape and texture, flower colour, and fruit size, while paternal control was limited to fruit colour in Solanum gilo × S. macrocarpon. Algae samples were collected from important dam lakes and running waters of the Lower Euphrates Basin. Eighteen new records of Turkish freshwater algae were identified. Among these new records, 5 belong to Cyanophyta, 10 to Chlorophyta, 1 to Xanthophyta, and 2 to Bacillariophyta.

Congruence Of Rapd And Issr Markers For Evaluation Of Genomic Relationship Among 28 Populations Of Podophyllum Hexandrum Royle From Himachal Pradesh, India, Md. Afroz Alam, Pradeep Kumar Naik, Gyan Prakash Mishra

Twenty eight populations of Podophyllum hexandrum Royle were selected to study genetic relationship using RAPD and ISSR markers from north-western Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh, India. Nineteen RAPD primers and 11 ISSR primers amplified a total of 131 and 68 scorable bands, of which 92.37% and 83.82%, respectively, were polymorphic. The mean coefficient of gene differentiation (Gst) was 0.6933 and 0.6296, indicating that Nei´s gene diversity of 33.77% and 29.44% reside in all the populations. Estimated value of gene flow for RAPD (Nm = 0.11059), for ISSR (Nm = 0.1470) individually, and the combination of RAPD+ISSR (Nm = 0.1211) markers indicated that …

Benthic Algae (Except Bacillariophyta) And Their Seasonal Variations In Karagöl Lake (Borçka, Artvin-Turkey), Saadet Kolayli, Bülent Şahi̇n

Seasonal variation in the species composition of the benthic algae of Karagöl Lake was investigated from April to October in 2001 and 2002. The benthic algal flora consisted of 38 taxa belonging to the divisions Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Euglenophyta, and Chrysophyta. In general, Chlorophyta were dominant in terms of species number and abundance during the study period. The distribution range of the benthic algae composition and dominant species differed from each other at all stations. Benthic algal growth was mostly influenced by water temperature and light.

Some new records of Inocybe (Fr.) Fr. based on samples collected from Osmaniye, Kilis, and Isparta provinces are presented. Inocybe flocculosa var. crocifolia (Herink) Kuyper, I. ochroalba Bruyl., I. pallida Velen., I. splendens var. splendens R. Heim, I. substellata Kühner, and I. vaccina Kühner were determined to be new records from Turkey.

The Rediscovery Of Some Taxa Thought To Have Been Extinct In Turkey, Ali̇ Kandemi̇r

This paper reports the re-discovery of Barbarea auriculata Hausskn. ex Bornm. var. auriculata (Brassicaceae), Onobrychis nitida Boiss. (Fabaceae), Onosma discedens Hausskn. ex Bornm. (Boraginaceae), and Silene oligotricha Hub.-Mor. (Caryophyllaceae). All of these taxa had been listed as Extinct (EX), according to the World Conservation Union Red List Categories. This study provides the re-descriptions of these taxa, presents field observations of these taxa, and suggests new IUCN categories.

Cyclamen trochopteranthum O.Schwarz has a confusing history, having been identified in the last part of the 19^{th} century and described as Cyclamen alpinum Sprenger. It remained known as C. alpinum until 1975, when it was described as C. trochopteranthum by Otto Schwarz. Cyclamen trochopteranthum is a species distributed in the south-western part of Turkey, but the C. trochopteranthum described in 1975 is today describe again as Cyclamen alpinum. The semidesert taxon Halothamnus (Chenopodiaceae), which is confirmed to supersede the later Aellenia, is represented in Turkey by H. glaucus subsp. glaucus and H. hierochunticus. The former was known to occur in Kars and Ağri provinces but was found recently in Kayseri province as well. The latter is a new record for the flora of Turkey from Şanlıurfa province close to the Syrian border. Full descriptions of the genus and the species occurring in Turkey are given and the case of Aellenia is discussed. Images and distributional data including maps are provided.

The authors investigated the influence of periphyton that abundantly overgrow stalks of reeds (reed-periphyton) submerged in water [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Stewdel], especially the old ones, on the occurrence of mycoflora species in different trophic seasons in the water of 4 trophically different water bodies. The seeds and snake exuviae were used as bait. In the spring, diatoms were the predominant group of algae forming the periphyton on old reed stalks, green algae predominated in the summer, and cyanobacteria in the autumn. Notes On Some Lichenicolous Fungi Species From Turkey Ii, Mehmet Gökhan Halici, Mehmet Candan, Ayşen Özdemi̇r Türk

Nine species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from various provinces of Turkey. Five species of these (Endococcus janae, Lichenochora aprica, Pronectria xanthoriae, Sarcopyrenia cylindrospora, and Zwackhiomyces cervinae) are reported for the first time from Turkey. All these taxa, except Zwackhiomyces cervinae, are also new to Asia. Comments on their habitats and substrata and a short diagnosis are provided for each new taxon new to Turkey.
