Resolution Of Deep Nodes Yields An Improved Backbone Phylogeny And A New Basal Lineage To Study Early Evolution Of Asteraceae, Jose L. Panero, Susana E. Freire, Luis Ariza Espinar, Bonnie S. Crozier, Gloria E. Barboza, Juan J. Cantero

Jose L. Panero

A backbone phylogeny that fully resolves all subfamily and deeper nodes of Asteraceae was constructed using 14 chloroplast DNA loci. The recently named genus Famatinanthus was found to be sister to the Mutisioideae–Asteroideae clade that represents more than 99% of Asteraceae and was found to have the two chloroplast inversions present in all Asteraceae except the nine genera of Barnadesioideae. A monotypic subfamily Famatinanthoideae and tribe Famatinantheae are named herein as new. Relation- ships among the basal lineages of the family were resolved with strong support in the Bayesian analysis as (Barnadesioideae (Famatinanthoideae (Mutisioideae (Stifftioideae (Wunderlichioideae– Asteroideae))))). Ancestral state reconstruction …

Geochemistry and mineralogy of rocks play important roles in the occurrence of individual lichen species and assembly of lichen communities. Whereas lichens of metal-enriched settings have been a focus of study for many decades, only a few such lichen inventories exist for North America. We reexamined the lichen biota of Pine Hill, a serpentine outcrop on Little Deer Isle, Maine and Callahan Mine, a copper- and zinc-enriched Superfund site in Brooksville, Maine by conducting additional field surveys and reexamining unidentified taxa from previous collections. To better characterize the substrates upon which the lichens were found, we conducted elemental analyses via …

Organogenesis Of Ammi Majus Via Callus Culture From Leaf., Sandip S. Magdum, Sanjeev Kumar Jan 2013

Organogenesis Of Ammi Majus Via Callus Culture From Leaf., Sandip S. Magdum, Sanjeev Kumar

Sandip S. Magdum

Ammi majus L. is an imperiled medicinal plant, which contains various medically important and uncommon extraordinary secondary metabolite compounds. An efficient organogenesis protocol was established for Ammi majus through in vitro process of leaf callusing, shooting and rooting by using different combination of auxins and cytokinins. In vitro cultured juvenile leaf explants were used directly for callus formation on MS supplemented with different concentration of IAA, Kn and CH. Maximum percentage response for callus formation was 97.7 after 5 weeks of incubation on MS supplemented with 2 mg/l IAA, 2 mg/l Kn and 1000 mg/l CH. About 81% of calluses …

Lichens Of Callahan Mine, A Copper And Zinc-Enriched Superfund Site In Brooksville, Maine, U.S.A., Nishanta Rajakaruna, Tanner B. Harris, Stephen R. Clayden, Alison C. Dibble, Fred S. Olday

Metal-enriched habitats often harbor physiologically distinct biotas able to tolerate and accumulate toxic metals. Plants and lichens that accumulate metals have served as effective indicators of ecosystem pollution. Whereas the diversity of metal-tolerant lichens has been well documented globally, the literature of metal-tolerant lichen communities for eastern North America is limited. We examined the lichen flora of the Callahan Mine, a Cu-, Pb-, and Zn-enriched superfund site in Brooksville, Hancock County, Maine, U.S.A. Through collections along transects across metal-contaminated areas of the mine, we documented 76 species of lichens and related fungi. Fifty species were saxicolous, 26 were terricolous. Forty-three …

Growth Performance Of Datura Innoxia Mill. Under The Stress Of Coal-Smoke Pollution, Azamal Husen, Muhammad Iqbal

Dr. Azamal Husen

One-year-old plants of Datura innoxia growing in natural condition in the Hamdard University campus, New Delhi (normal site) and around the Badarpur thermal power plant, New Delhi (polluted site), were studied and compared for their vegetative growth and pollen viability. The power plant emits 1450 tonnes fly ash and 100 tonnes sulphur dioxide per day. Significant variation was found in plant growth, biomass and pollen viability of the two population. The shoot growth was reduced at the polluted site but the root length, the number of branches and the plant biomass were increased, compared to the control. Pollen viability declined …

The Unusual Life History Of Alseis Blackiana: A Shade-Persistent Pioneer Tree?, Jason D. Nason, J. W. Dalling, K. Winter, S. P. Hubbell, D. A. Murawski, J. L. Hamrick Jan 2001

The Unusual Life History Of Alseis Blackiana: A Shade-Persistent Pioneer Tree?, Jason D. Nason, J. W. Dalling, K. Winter, S. P. Hubbell, D. A. Murawski, J. L. Hamrick

Jason D Nason

Classifications of tree species into regeneration guilds or functional groups are often based on a limited number of life history characteristics indicative of requirements for early establishment, with the assumption that these traits are correlated with growth requirements of larger individuals. We tested the validity of this assumption for Alseis blackiana, a common canopy tree in central Panama, by examining its seed germination, seedling growth, and sapling distribution, growth, and mortality. We found that the early life history of Alseis is characteristic of pioneer species: the seed germination rate was much higher in forest gaps than in the forest understory, …

Toward An Ecosystem Approach To Remediation In The Great Basin, Ted K. Raab Jan 2000

Toward An Ecosystem Approach To Remediation In The Great Basin, Ted K. Raab

Ted K. Raab

We consider the web of interactions among geologic materials, soils, plants, and animals to ask, "If mining or other extractive energy technologies occur in desert regions, what do we need to know to return the land to productivity?" The Great Basin represents a formidable challenge in this regard, as winters in these cold deserts and seasonal lack of moisture during parts of the year severely constrain the growing season for vegetation. Due to the nature of current or proposed mining activities in this region, we have chosen to concentrate on two potential pollutants: the trace element selenium (Se) and nitrate …

Structural, Functional And Biochemical Responses Of Datura Innoxia Mill. To Coal-Smoke Pollution, Azamal Husen, Muhammad Iqbal Jan 1999

Structural, Functional And Biochemical Responses Of Datura Innoxia Mill. To Coal-Smoke Pollution, Azamal Husen, Muhammad Iqbal

Dr. Azamal Husen

Effect of coal-smoke pollution on Datura innoxia Mill. was investigated. D. innoxia has shown that leaf length, single leaf area, total leaf area and leaves per plant decreased but leaf biomass increased under pollution stress. Epidermal features of upper and lower leaf surface responded to pollution stress differently. Rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were low, internal CO2 concentration was high and levels of chlorophyll a and b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids were reduced in polluted condition. Levels of proteins, reducing sugar in roots and sulphur contents in leaves, stem, roots and seeds showed significant increase under the polluted condition. …
