The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy

Examination of the complete musculature of Sceloporus clarki clarki Baird and Girard and seven other species of Sceloporus revealed variation among species of Sceloporus and between Sceloporus and other iguanid lizards. The muscles in which the greatest variation was found were the intermandibularis group, the constrictor colli, the episterno-cleido-mastoideus, the episternohyoideus, the coracoid head of the triceps, the costocoracoid and the flexor tibialis externus. This study indicates: (1) Sceloporus is more closely allied to Crotaphytus than to the ground-dwelling iguanines; (2) the possibility of the basal stock of Sceloporus being arboreal, and (3) Sceloporus is a genus in the process …

A Taxonomic Revision Of The Weevil Genus Tychius Germar In America North Of Mexico (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Wayne E. Clark

A study of morphological characters of 4,000 adult weevils used in preparing a key and descriptions indicates there are fifteen North American species in the genus Tychius Germar. Adults occur on plants in the genera Astragalus, Baptisia, Hedysarum, Lotus, Lupinus, and Oxytropis.
The genus is divided into two species groups. The T. sordidus group appears to have representatives in the Old World fauna, but the T. semisquamosus group is probably native to North America. New names, Tychius caesius, and T. hirsutus are proposed for T. armatus Green, 1920 (not Tournier, 1873), and T. hirtellus LeConte, 1876 (not Tournier, 1873) respectively. …

Notes On Eriogonum - Vi : A Revision Of The Eriogonum Microthecum Complex (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal

This revision discusses seven closely related species of Eriogonum (Polygonaceae) found in the western United States of North America. One of the two major species, E. microthecum, is composed of nine varieties which range over a wide area of the Far West. The other major species, E. effusum, is found over a more restrictive geographical range mainly east of the Continental Divide. The remaining five species are primarily restricted to the Colorado-Green river drainage basin of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and northern Arizona. Together these entities form the core of a group of plants known as Section Corymbosa. …

A Taxonomic Study Of Crotaphytus Collaris Between The Rio Grande And Colorado Rivers, William Ingram Iii, Wilmer W. Tanner

Little work has been done previously on the taxonomy of Crotaphytus collaris baileyi. This and the demonstration by Fitch and Tanner that C. c. baileyi is a heterogeneous grouping prompted the present study. Only the populations of the type material, the Upper Colorado River Basin, and the Chihuahuan Desert were studied. Multivariate, variance, canonical and discriminant analyses of external characters were performed, and pattern-coloration characters were examined on living specimens.
The results of the analyses show significance between all three populations. The discriminant functions distinguished between the populations with 80% reliability and patternal characters were discriminatory with near 100% reliability. …

This study is a taxonomic revision of Cryptantha subgenus Oreocarya (Boraginaceae), together with descriptions of species, synonyms, distribution maps, and discussions. The present treatment recognizes fifty-seven species and fourteen varieties, all separated by means of a comprehensive key, A history of the group, along with a discussion of distribution, ecology, and phylogeny is presented. As a basis for the comparison of taxa much of the research has been concentrated on morphological variation in herbarium specimens. Particular attention has been directed to a study of pubescence types, branching patterns, flowers, calyces, and fruit. The herbarium research has been correlated with extensive …

This is a review of the use of public lands in Wah Wah and Pine Valleys in western Utah for grazing of livestock, mining, and other private enterprises. The total area of the two valleys is approximately 1,440 square miles of which about 30 square miles are privately owned. From the time grazing of domestic livestock was initiated in the 1870's and 1880's until 1934, the land was free public domain and was grazed on a first-come, first-served basis. Passage of the Taylor Grazing Act in 1934 ended free use of public lands. Existing evidence indicates that by 1934 the …

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery, Wilmer W. Tanner

The problem of phylogenic relationships within the iguanine phyletic line and the Madagascar iguanids have been investigated in order to explain the discontinuous distribution exhibited by the members of the family Iguanidae. Owing to inconclusive results from cytology and histological methods, the comparative morphology of the anterior osteology, myology, tongues, and hemipenes were used to determine relationships.
An examination of the above structures of the members of the iguanine phyletic lines and a comparison with the Madagascar iguanids indicates the following: ( 1 ) The Madagascar genera Chalarodon and Oplurus appear to be more closely related to each other than …

A Comparative Study Of The Head And Thoracic Osteology And Myology Of The Skinks Eumeces Gilberti Van Denburgh And Eumeces Skiltonianus (Baird And Girard), David F. Nash, Wilmer W. Tanner

The differences observed from the osteology and myology are few and subtle.
Neither species is consistent in having all of the anatomical characters equal. E. skiltonianus, however, is more variable than gilberti. This species: 1. exhibits a wider range of variation in the number of slips of the intermandibularis anterior; 2. has two distinct bundles of the depressor mandibularis; and 3. has variation in the anterior suture pattern of the frontal, nasal, prefrontal and maxilla elements. E. gilberti on the other hand has: 1. only one distinct bundle of the depressor mandibularis; 2. a frequent reduction of the relative size …

Mites of 47 species and lice of 16 species were taken from reptiles of 3 species, birds of 23 species, and mammals of 18 species at the National Reactor Testing Station between June, 1966, and September, 1967. Mammals differed in degree of infestation relative to their geographic distribution at the station. The number of species of ectoparasites which occurred on a particular kind of host generally was in direct proportion to the number of hosts examined, but exceptions occurred in some instances. In some cases the rate of infestation differed relative to the sex of the host. The greatest numbers …
